00:00Terrific, they're pretty close as you know, they're not. I'm gonna see Mr.
00:04You guys, I'm not relating the math. Oh, come on. I loved that storyline. I'm just gonna pretend like I have to do with these guys
00:19I'm Tiffany Taylor for the Hollywood Reporter here at San Diego Comic-Con
00:232025 with the Lawrence brothers. Thank you for being here. Thanks for having us. It's great to be here
00:28So now you guys have a new graphic novel and that's why you're here at Comic-Con. How did the idea for this
00:34The Lawrence brothers detective agency come about? We were in the store passing milk cartons and we saw this. Yes
00:40Have you seen these boys? Have you seen these guys? Yeah, and it was us. They look familiar. Wait a minute. It's us
00:46And then we said we got to find us. So we decided you know what we have to start a detective agency
00:50We've been doing this for 40 years
00:51So it's like the one thing we haven't done and then we teamed up with a great team and
00:55uh, we put the whole thing together
00:57What sort of mysteries will these detectives be solving?
01:01Well, you know lost careers from the 90s. Yeah, no
01:05Lots of childhood stars. Where have they gone missing? Yes, so we're gonna go find them
01:09Yeah, truly your favorite cast that you have not seen in 30 years. Are they still working? Are they even alive? We're gonna go find out
01:15No, it's a lot of things. We're gonna be looking at everything. That's part of it. But um, you know, it's kind of like a
01:21Sort of a a an edgy adult scooby-doo and we actually are gonna have a detective agency
01:26And we're gonna go find stuff now this takes place in like a corrupt hollywood, right?
01:31Shockingly
01:31Yeah, it was not corrupt
01:33So I corrupt clearly we're having a little fun, you know, we're having a little fun taking some liberty
01:38Lots of small time thefts that need to be solved. Yep
01:42Yep, our kickstarter went live yesterday
01:44And we're having so much fun with it
01:46It really took off and it just makes you feel it's pretty shocking, right? Because we do this thing and obviously we love the graphic novel world
01:52We've never done anything like this, right?
01:53We teamed up to work with
01:54Brothers and and obviously they know the world and and they came to us and said guys
01:58I think this could be really something cool and to have the kickstarter sort of jump off the way it did
02:02people can kind of join they can become
02:05Honorary lawrence brothers, uh, they can actually become characters in the book. Yep
02:09So there's a whole bunch of stuff that you can be a part of
02:12Um, and they've really taken to it and it's just been so exciting to watch, you know
02:16Will it be entirely funded through kickstarter?
02:19Um, no, not entirely. No, it's how these things begin, you know, so it's sort of um
02:25How they start and then it will grow from there?
02:28Talk a little bit more about what the fan support has been like on kickstarter and yeah kind of the things that fans can
02:34How they can be a part of it? Yeah, um, well from exclusive
02:38Signed books to like I said being a part of it to being mentioned in the book to being a character in the story
02:43All the way to being an official
02:46Lawrence brother like the fourth one that's brother
02:48Yes, what's the price tier for that? Oh millions millions and millions. It's crazy thousand dollars for the ultimate prize is
02:56Five thousand dollars, so you know to be a brother that feels cheap. That feels like a small price
03:01We're selling it. We're not trying to you know, we're not trying to take advantage. No five thousand dollars
03:06You can be one of us. Yep, that's all we pay each other. So it's true. We're very cheap every month
03:11I give joe five thousand dollars and I continue to be his brother. Yes, so it's been good
03:15It's been really good works out. I read that you guys have high hopes for this
03:18You'd love to see it, you know in the tv or movie sphere
03:22What are your biggest dreams for the lawrence brothers detective agency animated series for sure would be the next phase
03:28This is the beginning. We're all big fans of animation and stuff and uh, yes
03:32And again, I think it would be a fun a fun step when I said scooby-doo. That's where we see it going
03:36And it's an adult, you know, kind of scooby-doo edgy fun, um, you know and animated for sure
03:42Yeah, I just hope that these three bumbling
03:44kids can uh
03:46Can solve some uh some serious crimes. Yeah, if they can't these bumbling men will so that'll be fun
03:52By absolute accident
03:54We are going to crack some of the toughest cases between our procedural drama skills learned from 90s television and absolutely
04:00The berkowitz brothers and sean von gorman. We're going to kick the butt. You know, I had a little guest star on ncis
04:07from that point on
04:09I knew
04:11We were destined for this. Yeah
04:12Now earlier we were talking about how it's you know set in hollywood. So definitely very meta
04:17And even though it sounds yes super fun and edgy
04:20I guess will that edginess take it into maybe kind of addressing some of the pitfalls of hollywood that you guys experienced as young actors
04:26Absolutely. Why not? I don't think anything's off the table
04:29uh creatively we are uh unobstructed so um
04:33You know, there are several directions that it that it will go and and that we've talked about it going and we'll have you laughing
04:38We'll have you crying a full gamut of emotions. Yes hiding your face in fear. There'll be a whole gamut of
04:45Emotions you might never leave your house. Who knows? Well, a lot of people aren't doing that just in general nowadays
04:49So, you know, so why not get behind a graphic novel?
04:52Sit on the couch or scroll and read it'll be perfect. You'll love it. You'll love it
04:56But but so many fans are just so excited to still see you all working together
05:01I mean all these years later why we're still alive
05:04We are
05:05Have you seen these boys?
05:07You've done that bit. It's it's played out. We get us
05:10Yeah
05:10But why is it important for you guys to still work together as brothers and create content together have the podcast together?
05:16I mean deliver to fans in that way. Yeah, honest
05:18Honestly, we've been so lucky, you know
05:20We've been in all seriousness been able to do this for 40 years, you know, and it's pretty crazy
05:24Well, speak for yourself. I'm 37, but that's okay
05:26Well, obviously we've been dragging andy through it, which is why he's even still working
05:29But at the end of the day, um, we've been able to do this for a very long time and we feel very lucky to do that
05:35Very few people get that opportunity and um, you know
05:39The whole world of entertainment has changed so drastically in the last 5 10 years, especially after covet like everything just changed
05:45And um, you know doing the podcast like andy said and doing this graphic novel
05:49These are things that we never really saw ourselves doing, but um, we're having so much fun doing it
05:53And as matt has said before and andy said before when we work together
05:56We really have more fun than at any other time
06:00So to be at this point in our lives as grown men and to be able to work together and have this this kind of fun
06:04Doing what we love to do and to be supported by an incredible group of fans in in our community that has followed us for so many years
06:11You just can't really ask for anything
06:12I think the best way to sum this up short and sweet
06:15We did it be uh, what I said was pretty nice, you know alone, okay weak together
06:20Strong yeah, I know you and andy have said that a lot, but I never really personally said that
06:24But that's really just sums it up sure. I like it
06:26Yeah, and fans have been asking for a brotherly love reboot on tv for years
06:30And you've kind of teased over the years that maybe a new tv project from all of you is coming
06:34What are the latest updates on that it is and we're getting closer and closer to it?
06:38It's just we finally uh have season one complete
06:42um, and uh, what in season just give up talking once
06:46Joe's doing it all ahead any time you want to cut in i'm joking i know you are
06:50Um, but we're gonna pass the milk carton and that's going to give us the opportunity to speak. Oh, yeah, that's a good idea
06:55I like that. I like that. Anyway, it's season one is complete
06:58Uh, it'll be launching soon and we'll be getting all the details coming out
07:02Um, probably in the next month or so wait, that's amazing
07:04So you've already shot season one of the series now
07:07This is the hollywood reporter. So i'm going to kind of dig in are you shopping it around? Is it coming out on streaming?
07:12What's the plan? Yeah, it's well, here's the world
07:14So it's gonna be um, our brother joe
07:17Loves to put the cart before the horse. No, there's no
07:20There's a lot of horses and a lot of cars. No, we are ready. No, we didn't
07:25We're gonna launch it in a very unique way. So very trying to be as um
07:30Vague as possible as possible you with it. No, it's the business has changed. It's really changed
07:34So we have to adapt with the business and
07:38Going the old
07:40Way is not really the best way to get your product out there anymore
07:44There have been so there's so this is riveting riveting information guys different avenues and so many different things
07:49So that's really been the biggest thing. We've been trying to figure out is exactly how do we do
07:54How do we present this in the best way possible? That's that's and that's what we're literally figuring out right now
07:59Yeah, we think we've cracked it and uh, we'll have updates soon
08:02Maybe you've cracked it truly. I think we have maybe
08:04We've cracked it. That's smart. And I mean, that's how you you know, I mean like stay in the business and you keep evolving
08:09Well, yes, exactly right
08:12Yeah, so it's gonna be exciting
08:13It's like a renaissance period for entertainment. So we're constantly, you know
08:17Reinventing and figuring out how to stay current and modern and luckily we we again
08:22We're just super blessed and humbled that we have a community out there that that is supporting us and behind us in all these different adventures
08:29Matt just broke his microphone. No, no, no, it's just oh your pop filter
08:32Wow, what a technical term
08:34What's it been like? This is your first comic-con being here with the comic-con community for the first time
08:39It's been great. The reaction has been awesome, you know, we feel very welcomed here even though we've never done anything like this before
08:45Um, and uh, we're having a lot of we're having a lot of fun. I mean, this is this is this is the mecca, right?
08:49I mean, this is like this is the one, you know, so um, being here at San Diego like like this is
08:55I like to call it the Coachella of cons. There you go kind of feels like that. It does. It's pretty wild out there
09:01You know most cons
09:03It's it's it's you know, you got a lot of people dressing up and it's fun everything, but this one's just on a whole other level
09:08It is top dog top dog of cons
09:11And we're having we're having fun. We're gonna keep the fun going. I'm gonna have you answer some
09:15Popcorn bucket comic-con questions from the crypto the dog from superman
09:20Each of you can draw one out of it
09:23And then all the milk cartons down is that where crypto like crypto came from maybe the dog
09:28Do you think that inspired crypto like cryptocurrency? No, no like kryptonite. He's a character that's been around for a while
09:34Oh, I got the million-dollar question. I'll go first. What's your favorite comic book villain and why the joker because he's the best
09:41You really want me to go for this? Well, I got to give a little back story to my question. What do you mean?
09:44Do I really want you to answer the question? Sure. I was out of town and these two guys decided to do a podcast without me
09:51Highest rated one we've ever done
09:53Just putting it out there
09:57Yeah, we just got the question. Now I'll get to my question. Did you see James Gunn's Superman and what did you think?
10:03Okay, well here Matt, what did you think about it? Yeah, you need to tell us what we thought about what did you think? Look, it's it's a
10:10There's definitely a take. It's clear that it's James Gunn
10:14It reminded me a lot of the guardians of the galaxy series
10:19I liked mr. Fantastic and that storyline that squad
10:24I thought that worked in the film the most mr. Terrible
10:28No, mr. Fantastic and mr. Terrible you guys
10:31What's the guy we had a check for these two and have them brought it was then why don't you tell us?
10:36Yeah, who was it the guy the crew the other crew then nathan fillion crew that was green lantern, right?
10:42Terrific terrific
10:44Didn't I say you said terrible I said fantastic terrible terrific and they're pretty close as you know they're not
10:50I'm gonna see mr. You guys anyway, I'm not really in the match
10:55Come on. I loved that storyline. I'm just gonna pretend like I have to do with these guys. This is my life. I love that storyline
11:02I thought that
11:04Some of the scene work didn't work for me like they had this scene Superman had the scene with Lois Lane
11:10I don't wanna ruin it for anybody so, you know, I don't think you're gonna ruin it by saying Superman was in a scene with Lois Lane
11:15That's true. That's true. I think they can expect that one
11:18Okay, okay
11:19We have a scene where they kind of have a fight about a
11:24Interview they're having a relationship
11:25I understand what the point of it was. It was to humanize
11:30Superman put him in this thing, but I don't think it was accomplished and I felt there were other scenes like that in this movie where I was like
11:36I could take or leave this scene and I didn't really so those sure the
11:41Connection. I also didn't feel the connection to Superman that I wanted to feel
11:44I don't know what that was about
11:46But I didn't get that like shortened here's and here's the above all short answer got me this really got me
11:52I'm a huge
11:53Animal lover. I work in conservation. I have
11:57More pets than I can count most of them reptiles and amphibians
12:01But I've had some amazing connections with dogs over the years
12:05And that is not the relationship that I wanted to see. I think it needed more heart
12:10It needed more depth. He was kind of like this dog. I don't really care about this dog
12:14And the dog leaves him at the end of the movie watching the dog
12:17I that connection if you've had a dog and you had a real connection with your dog that is not it and I wish I would have seen that because
12:24It that always needs to be highlighted. It's not in the right way
12:29And I just felt like spring was so callous
12:31Towards the towards crypto. I didn't like that and I thought also crypto was very superficial the dog itself dogs have
12:39No pun intended. They were super, but they have are we still here
12:42They have an incredible amount of depth with their emotions. They really do and that just what's non-existent
12:48Matt and I would have loved to have seen what relationship be more of the crux of the movie what like they did
12:53He came comes in and saves them at the end. Yo, Matt again
12:56You didn't feel where what do you can you have a you have like a two-word?
13:01Can we rewrite the question and put in there in bold letters?
13:05One sentence answer anywhere on there that says keep it short. Yes, right there
13:08It's it's implying you know what it says it on mine
13:12Okay, I had a lot to say now. Oh my gosh, you're done with all that said with all that said
13:17With all that said I still think it was a new take and that was cool
13:21You know what I liked about it. I like that Superman was reintroduced to a new generation
13:25I think that's a good accomplishment. I just wish a hero some love some kindness that was introduced a little bit different
13:30The movie did we like it?
13:33Something there was like it was like the timing was off or something was just off in some of these scene words
13:38So you were not sold. I wasn't but you liked it. I liked elements of it. Okay, I'm real. I'm a tough critic. You know
13:44I'm like a tim burton batman kind of guy. So yeah, it's it when when that they're just I think they're two different breeds really
13:51Yeah, you know, yeah
13:52Two different schools. Do you want to do your question?
13:55Are you sure? Are you sure we might be here for a while?
13:59All right, my question is another one. Oh, no
14:02I have an easy question. Um, how do you feel about the political environment in the coke?
14:07No, my question is uh, what is your song of the summer? That's my question. Patti LaBelle
14:11No, it's Patti LaBelle stir it up
14:15What that's yours? I did that song, but my song of the summer this summer, you know, um
14:22She's a bad mama jama came back and it trended and everything like um
14:26What you just said this summer and then you yes, what is your song of the summer bad mom?
14:32I'm a jamma. That's the thing
14:33It's the you but I said Patti LaBelle and you're like Patti LaBelle this summer as if you were going to go into something current
14:38No, I don't and then you regurgitated something from the same period that I was going from yes, but the song is
14:44Has re-emerged in all of the kids because I have teenage daughters and everybody like love this song
14:48And it's so funny because I love this song since I was a little kid, but it's come back
14:52So we've been blasting that a lot this summer
14:54I love seeing your brotherly bond still and I guess you were talking about how much you love working together and brothers
14:58My final question is what's the hardest part of working together as being brothers?
15:02It's like a family business, you know
15:04Like any business, there's going to be some quarrels and because we're brothers. Maybe they are heightened
15:09But there's the loves there and we and we always resolve it. We do well. Yeah, you have to that's the thing, right?
15:15Or at least you should strive for the gentleman's game. Usually it's 10 paces. Yeah, the dueling pistol
15:20And we have a rule where luckily we neither already rules
15:23So if we do have to agree and the other one doesn't that other one loses doesn't matter. I prefer the dueling pistol
15:29Yeah, the brotherly love that's it. Thank you guys so much for hanging out. Thank you
