00:27Hello everyone, I'm Jalen Rose. On behalf of ESPN on EA Sports, we've got an NBA showdown. The San Antonio Spurs are the favorites to emerge.

00:39Welcome to Staples Center in Los Angeles. It's Monday Night NBA presented by ESPN on EA Sports as we get set for the first meeting of the season between the LA Clippers and the San Antonio Spurs.

00:52All right, as this game gets underway, Jeff, is there anybody that stands out in your mind that they need to focus on against the Spurs tonight?

01:00There's a lot to worry about when you're facing Tim Duncan.

01:22I'm Jalen Rose

01:52This guy knows how to win. He rebounds, he passes, he screens, and most importantly, he protects the basket against any and all drivers to the rim.

02:04This guy should go into the Hall of Fame with one tag. That's winner. He's won at every level, and he does it selflessly.

02:51in San Antonio Tim Duncan he's still the franchise but it's become Tony Parker's team and

02:59this young man the way he's improved year in and year out he's without question one of the

03:04best point guards in the offensively no one plays with the offensive energy of

03:09Tony Parker the ability to push the ball up the floor and then run multiple pick

03:14and rolls when multiple actions whether it's a dribble handoff into a pick and

03:18roll a pick and roll and gets it back into another pick and roll you can never

03:22relax because Tony Parker is absolutely relentless the Spurs with the ball here

03:29gets past the defender Parker for two and the rebound taken by Crawford

03:35nice adjustment and we have a foul called against Leonard picks up his first personal

03:43and Anthony Davis will go to the line he's shooting 87 percent from the line on the season

03:49that's good sound solid basketball right there you go strong to the basket you get fouled and now you

03:57have a great free throw shooter shooting free throws

03:59the Spurs coming off a hard-earned win in their previous game against New Orleans

04:09Jeff seems a lot easier when you shoot that many free throws when you're putting together a roster

04:14you have to have enough people on your team who have a history of drawing fouls putting their opponent

04:23into the penalty and then making free throws timely free throws and getting there over and over again

04:32it's such an underrated aspect of winning NBA games they got to the charity strike and they got the victory

04:39it'd be hard to imagine San Antonio without a Tim Duncan but it's going to happen one of these days

04:51can Kawhi Leonard no no it can't happen we need to put Tim Duncan in the time machine the NBA needs him

04:58so we've got to turn he's got to go Benjamin Button on us he's got to get younger and stay in the league you need

05:03to come to grips with us eventually he's going to retire oh i i don't want to see that day i i'm

05:09seriously tears will flow from my eyes the day Tim Duncan leaves the NBA that's how important he's been

05:15to the history of this league you become very emotional as you get older that's true

05:20that won't go fires away for two and Tim Duncan with the bucket Jeff in today's pro sports to a lot

05:27of athletes who like to celebrate themselves there's the preening there's the look at me stances

05:32Tim Duncan is the antithesis of that it was never about bringing attention to himself it's just

05:37about making the right play every time up and down the field couldn't agree with you more mike

05:41it was always about the next play instead of celebrating the previous play he expects to be

05:48great he expects to be efficient so it's not something that he wants everybody to praise him for

05:56he expects that of himself he's always on to the next play

06:09using his positioning to get the boards that's a two the spurs up by nine and while there are plenty

06:18of things you could point to as to why they're winning right now this is just a matter of great

06:24offense they put a lot of points on the scoreboard

06:31the clippers coming off a sour loss in their previous game against portland

06:36jeff what was the matter with their defense that they just weren't defending the way they should

06:40that was some bad bad bad defense that they played if you're not gonna put all you have into a game

06:48then why even go out there and play if you don't want to go to work then why do you have nba

06:54basketball as your job work or perish

07:00and the run continues jeff boy it's getting uncomfortable why haven't they called timeout

07:05mike i don't like to second guess but i'm surprised they haven't called a timeout right here

07:10i know some coaches like to let their players play through the swings of the game but right here

07:16a timeout is warranted gets past the defense nice from downtown and danny green with a nice look from

07:25three-point range

07:38at the rim no good on the layup attempt don't worry just work keep doing what you're doing

07:45get the ball at the basket and then finish strong crawford from downtown and they miss another one

07:52haven't been able to score now in over three minutes duncan and here's the double it's good

07:58there's the whistle and the timeout is finally called i was about to get on my knees and beg

08:05them to take a timeout finally they did they called it and now they're able to break the momentum of this run

08:22jordan jump shot that shot won't go that's just too early you can't take that type of shot and expect

08:33to make up ground in this league and kawhi leonard with the bucket from downtown

08:39if you don't get to a score early it's hard to stop it this guy has scored so many buckets in so

08:47many different ways in this first half number four jay reddick the spurs go on the move beats his man

08:55and he curls in parker it's denied

09:03pause misses the shot

09:06parker brings it across ginobili jump shot reddick the rebound we're seeing a lot of action around the

09:17basket full body blockouts up in the air for rebound battles this is terrific basketball pause the rebound

09:26goes for the three-pointer ball shot from downtown won't go

09:39parker fires away deep in the corner that three-pointer off the mark ginobili gets it to go

09:45the spurs up by 19. it should be no surprise that they're ahead in this game you look at the roll

09:53they're on offensively and you understand exactly why they are winning won't go three-pointer just

10:11ginobili jump shot two-pointer won't go

10:16the clippers with the ball in possession looking to curl in reddick knocks it down

10:35he got a piece of it it's out of bounds it'll be spurs ball

10:54now we have a couple of substitutions for us diao comes in for tim duncan and marco bellinelli also

11:02subs in for kawhi leonard and number three marco bellinelli

11:09ginobili not able to hit from downtown no question they've dug themselves a huge hole here in the first

11:16half because they haven't been defensively dominant but the way to get back in the game is contest shots

11:23oh he goes for the save there tony parker with the ball

11:31blows past the defender he curls oh nice rejection by hawes

11:35and without question they've made a statement defensively with their shot blocks early in this game

11:43diao against hawes oh he beats the defender diao for two puts it up jordan the rebound

11:55you got to learn to win in different ways sometimes all your shots are going in and the rebound totals

12:02are down here tonight the ball isn't going in so you've got to win the battle of the boards

12:07the assist from number three chris tony parker with the ball here

12:18for the layup can't bring it home driving the ball into the paint is the most important

12:23offensive tool in the game he had a great look he just missed it

12:49hey jeff we watch it night in and night out how does tony parker get his shot off with all the big

12:54trees around him well i think he does it in a number of ways he lost shots up over the outstretched

13:21great scouting and tough decisions on draft night can turn around a franchise and not just when you

17:30at that range you've got to give the ball up and get it to someone who's more offensively capable than

17:37you are to the basket misses the layup they continue to slice up this defense by getting the ball to the

17:44rim unfortunately on that one it didn't go down davis's shot misses the two poise and precision will get

17:52you a better quality shot than that that's a bailout shot that's a i'm going to try to get us back in and

17:59be a hero type of shot flips it home that's nice body control right there on that layup good finish

18:07davis on the drive eight and a half remaining in the second la down by 19

18:17san antonio bringing it up on offense splitters trying to get down low

18:23to the basket flips it up off the mark from point blank range they've done a good job getting the

18:34ball into the paint but unfortunately they just haven't converted at the basket shot blocked by

18:48defensive intensity and los angeles is called for their first team foul

19:19offensively you need guys who sacrifice themselves for the betterment of the team

21:41he's done is he's overlooked his great weakness in free throw shooting and said even if you get

21:47fouled in the fourth quarter overcome it by playing great defense and help us make a stop at the other

21:54end of the floor out of bounds ref says it'll be clippers ball personnel changes for both sides right now

22:10parker for two lets it go hits the shot that's solid basketball right there

22:24creating an open two-point shot and knocking it home

22:45the spurs with the ball here gets past the defense nice and the paint and lays it in nicely

22:52sometimes the simplest plays are the hardest ones to execute good lay

23:06when you see how many rebounds these teams have already combined for the story about this game

23:13is rebounding but the real story is neither team can make a shot that's why the rebounding numbers

23:19are so hot

23:26puts it up terrific block by duncan all right i'm gonna bring up a topic i know drives you crazy

23:32tim duncan many call the greatest power forward of all time but in reality he's been a center right

23:37or does it matter where we label the player here's my thing he started out as a power for when tim uh

23:43when david robinson was there and then over time as the game changed to more downsizing he became a

23:50center let's not get bogged down in the semantics of power forward or center he's going to go down

23:57as one of the top 10 players to have ever played nba basketball the spurs with the ball in control

24:05beats his man gets to the rim draws the foul it's called against jordan and tony parker will go to the

24:12line for a couple of free throws team foul number two first free throw good tony parker to the line

24:20shooting two stepping in and he makes them both number seven cba henry

24:27fires from downtown and that's his eighth rebound of the game

24:39tony parker with the ball in possession inside flips that one in

24:45crawford from three point territory shot from downtown no good knocks it down for two the clippers down by 29

25:04the spurs go on the move blows past the defender parker and scores that's a 12 to 4 run for the spurs

25:24shoots the three rebound snatched by duncan and that's become a familiar sight watching him grab

25:32rebound after rebound he's definitely putting in the work

25:39to the rim flips it in no degree of difficulty right there simple basketball good result

25:55right right on top of it the call is goaltending i think that's even a tougher call than the block

26:01charge i think we need to have a new rule where we have a chip installed in the ball to know when

26:07the ball is coming down and the ball like lights up so a referee can make the proper call san antonio

26:17parker's shot blocked and he's already got as many blocks for himself as some teams hope to get in an entire

26:29game he's off to a great start defensively

30:22quite a lot to say at halftime you know what always rankles me mike i don't see the pride necessary

30:28when you're getting beat as badly as they are where's the pride to make a stand and say no more

30:35no more as a team and as an individual i am not seeing that and that's always discouraging to a

30:41coaching staff
