00:00His bags are packed. He's got his airplane tickets.
00:03Bring him to the airport.
00:06Send him home.
00:07Welcome to WatchMojo,
00:08and today we're counting down our picks for the most gut-busting moments
00:12from the cult classic Adam Sandler sports comedy Happy Gilmore.
00:15Get this off of me!
00:17Mister!
00:18Hang on, I'll be right down!
00:20You know that Mister Mister lady?
00:22I think I just killed her.
00:25Number 10. Chubbs shows happy what golf is all about.
00:30Time!
00:35Relax, just do what we talked about, huh?
00:36Don't even look at the green.
00:38Make contact with the ball.
00:39There's no goalie out there to block it.
00:41It probably goes without saying,
00:42but Happy Gilmore isn't exactly a natural when it comes to golf.
00:45Or hockey, for that matter.
00:47Still, his ridiculously powerful drive makes him a force to be reckoned with.
00:51Happy's first real step towards taking golf seriously
00:53comes when he teams up with former pro Chubbs Peterson,
00:56who recognizes his raw talent and potential
00:58and takes him under his wing.
01:00You got real talent, kid.
01:01Well, that's nice of you to say,
01:03but I've been training to be a hockey player my whole life.
01:06Golf's no different from hockey.
01:08It requires talent, self-discipline.
01:10Golf requires goofy pants and a fat ass.
01:13You should talk to my neighbor, the accountant,
01:14probably a great golfer, huge ass.
01:16Hey.
01:16Happy's early attempts on the green are less than graceful.
01:19But that changes when Chubbs,
01:21played by the late great Carl Weathers,
01:23shows him how to loosen up his swing.
01:24Sure, the coaching gets a little hands-on,
01:27but hey, you can't argue with the results.
01:36Number 9.
01:38Happy begs Terry to come back.
01:39Happy Gilmore kicks off like any classic
01:57Adam Sandler character introduction should,
01:59with our hero firmly planted at rock bottom.
02:01After a crushing, yet entirely predictable rejection,
02:04Happy returns home to find his girlfriend Terry
02:07packing up for good.
02:08You're not going for good, are you, honey?
02:10You're going nowhere, Happy,
02:12and you're taking me with you.
02:13All you ever talk about is being a pro hockey player,
02:16but there's a problem.
02:17You're not any good.
02:18I am good.
02:20You know what?
02:21You're a lousy kindergarten teacher.
02:23I've seen those finger paintings you bring home,
02:24and they suck.
02:26We don't get much insight into their relationship,
02:28but it's clear her patience has run out,
02:30especially with Happy's refusal to accept
02:33that his pro hockey dreams are dead in the water,
02:34or, you know, ice.
02:36In a hilariously pathetic last-ditch effort to win her back,
02:39Happy channels Romeo and Juliet
02:41and calls out to her from the top floor.
02:42But no amount of serenading can make up
02:45for the fact that Terry is long gone.
02:46I wanna kiss you all over,
02:50and over and again.
02:54I wanna kiss you all over,
02:58dun, dun, dun,
03:00till the night closes in.
03:03Number eight,
03:04Happy tries out for the local hockey team.
03:06How many times this guy tried out anyway?
03:08At least ten times.
03:10Guy's got a lot of intensity.
03:14Not a real strong skater, though.
03:16Ain't the best puck handler either.
03:18As Happy explains in the film's opening voiceover,
03:21he's got a bit of an anger problem,
03:22the kind that stems from his dad's untimely death
03:25by rogue hockey puck.
03:26Nowhere is that more apparent than in this scene,
03:29where Happy's trademark intensity blows his shot at making the team,
03:33despite a gladiatorial effort on the rink.
03:35Number one.
03:37Number 52.
03:39Number 16.
03:41They saw my power, man.
03:42Ain't no way they're gonna dog me this year.
03:44Number nine.
03:46And number 43.
03:49The rest of you,
03:50if your number wasn't called,
03:51better luck next year.
03:52This hot-headed tryout tells us everything we need to know
03:55about the now-iconic character.
03:57He's got the right stuff somewhere deep within,
03:59but his lack of discipline and explosive temper
04:02just keep holding him back.
04:03Still, Happy's loss is the audience's gain.
04:06Just don't say that to his face.
04:07Well, hey, Coach.
04:09What's going on here, man?
04:10What about me?
04:12Gilmore.
04:13Gilmore.
04:14I, uh, called your number, didn't I?
04:16No, no, no, no, you didn't.
04:18Oh.
04:19Well, better luck next year.
04:22Now, that wasn't very nice.
04:24What are you doing?
04:25Oh!
04:26Oh!
04:27Number seven.
04:28Happy surprises Chubbs.
04:30You really took some giant steps out there tonight.
04:33I'm really proud of you.
04:35Thanks.
04:36So, here.
04:38I've got something really special for you here.
04:41Oh, wow.
04:41Thanks, Chubbs.
04:42See that?
04:43That was the same putter I used when I played.
04:45Slightly modified, of course.
04:47Man.
04:48This is excellent.
04:50After a particularly nail-biting round of mini-golf,
04:53Happy and Chubbs celebrate back at Happy's pennant-covered apartment.
04:56In a surprisingly heartfelt moment that functions as a touching display of mutual gratitude,
05:00they exchange gifts to show their appreciation for one another.
05:03Oh, you got the spirit of a hockey player in you, Happy.
05:06So, I figured why fight it, eh?
05:08Oh, I got something for you, too, pal.
05:10What?
05:11Yeah, I mean, I figured if it wasn't for you, none of this would have happened, right?
05:14So, I want to show my appreciation.
05:17Chubbs offers a thoughtful token of his belief in Happy,
05:19a sign of his faith in the younger man's unorthodox approach to golf.
05:23Happy's gift, on the other hand?
05:24Let's just say the intention was there.
05:27Oh, this looks nice.
05:28What is it, eh?
05:29Open it up.
05:30Gee.
05:32Oh, man.
05:33Remember the gator that got your hand?
05:35I got his head.
05:38Unfortunately, his well-meaning gesture triggers a traumatic reaction from Chubbs,
05:42spurred on by a very familiar nemesis.
05:44The result?
05:46Possibly the most tragically hilarious one-man handshake ever put to film.
05:50I don't know.
05:51You can't blame yourself for this.
05:53I guess that alligator finally finished the job, huh?
05:56I'm gonna miss you, pal.
06:07I don't know how the hell I'm gonna play today.
06:09Number 6.
06:10Happy fights a familiar alligator.
06:12Happy Gilmore from Nine Feet.
06:14Uh-oh, here comes the putter throw.
06:17Wait.
06:18He's restrained himself.
06:19Maybe this is a new Happy Gilmore.
06:21Placed under the watchful eye of Julie Bowen's Virginia Vennett,
06:24the golf tour's public relations manager,
06:26Happy attempts to rein in his bad boy behavior.
06:29However, that attempt doesn't last very long,
06:31as a misplaced putt lands a golf ball in the mouth of a certain apex predator.
06:35That son of a bitch!
06:38Give me my ball!
06:39Give it here!
06:40Pop it up, you dirty bastard!
06:42I swear to God, I'll rip it out of you!
06:44Give me the...
06:45Give me the ball, alligator.
06:50Ah!
06:51Happy's efforts to gingerly retrieve the ball are unsuccessful,
06:54but the closer he gets, he realizes something.
06:57This isn't any ordinary gator.
06:59This is the one-eyed rapscallion that prematurely ended Chubbs' dreams of golf superstardom.
07:04You've got one eye.
07:07Chubbs.
07:09You took his hand.
07:11Happy puts his trademark rage to altruistic use by not only getting his ball back,
07:15but avenging Chubbs' lost hand.
07:17Of course, it's more than a little bittersweet knowing what we know now.
07:20Number 5.
07:21Hal L lays down the law.
07:23Hal looks more like a country club than a nursing home.
07:26Nice grass, nice people.
07:28I hope you brought your bathing suit.
07:30I'm telling you, this place is perfect.
07:32You're going to make friends in no time.
07:34Mr!
07:34Ah!
07:35Get me out of here!
07:39Here, just eat that!
07:41Leave us alone!
07:42When Happy learns that his grandmother's house is facing foreclosure,
07:46he drops her off at Silver Acre's rest home as he scrambles to buy it back.
07:49At first glance, the place seems fine, aside from one notably miserable resident.
07:54The mustachioed orderly Hal L, played in an uncredited role by Sandler's longtime friend
07:59and collaborator Ben Stiller, appears warm and professional enough.
08:02Sir, um, could I trouble you for a glass of warm milk?
08:06It helps put me to sleep.
08:08You could trouble me for a warm glass of-
08:10Shut the hell up!
08:12Now you will go to sleep, or I will put you to sleep.
08:16Check out the name tag.
08:17You're in my world now, Grandma.
08:19Oh, dear.
08:21But it doesn't take long to realize that Hal is a cruel taskmaster in disguise.
08:25And Grandma needs out fast.
08:27And really, we have to wonder, do Hal's satisfied customers know that their quilts were made under
08:32heartbreaking duress?
08:33Okay, listen up, everybody!
08:35Turn up your volumes!
08:36Announcement!
08:37I got good news!
08:38We're extending arts and crafts time by four hours today!
08:40My fingers hurt.
08:42Number 4.
08:43Happy and Shooter's Rhyme Off
08:45You know, you'd be something in one of those long drive contests.
08:48Hell, you could probably get very good living, traveling around, hustling at driving ranges.
08:51Thanks, Phil.
08:52That's, that's, that's, you know, I know what you're doing right now, and I don't like it.
08:56So why don't you just shut your trap before I put my foot in it?
09:02Don't turn your back on me.
09:04Let's get one thing straight.
09:05This is Shooter's Tour.
09:06If it wasn't already obvious, Happy Gilmore is a classic underdog tale in the vein of Caddyshack,
09:12a celebration of the scrappy outsider taking on a world of smug elitism.
09:16Enter Christopher McDonald's Shooter McGavin, the perfect embodiment of golf's snobbish establishment.
09:21Did you just call me a freak?
09:23I was on this tour for one reason, money.
09:26But now I got a new reason, kicking your ass.
09:29Well, I'd like to see you try.
09:32Let's do it.
09:33Hey, I'm out on a golf course.
09:36Hey, hey, what is going on here, huh?
09:38Oh, I was just, I'm looking for the other half of this bottle.
09:41After Happy's explosive rise to fame, the two form an instant heated rivalry,
09:45with Shooter smugly dismissing Happy's obvious considerable talent.
09:49Over drinks, they lay out what's at stake.
09:52For Happy, it's Grandma's house.
09:53For the snooty entitled Shooter, it's his legacy.
09:55But, just as things get serious, Shooter's ominous warning is hilariously undercut
10:00by Happy's total lack of reverence.
10:03Just stay out of my way, or you'll pay.
10:06Listen to what I say.
10:08How about I just go eat some hay?
10:10I can make things out of clay and lay by the bay.
10:12I just may.
10:13What do you say?
10:15Number 3.
10:16What Shooter Eats for Breakfast
10:17What's going on here?
10:19I'm glad you made it.
10:20This is very exciting.
10:21We're gonna auction off your grandmother's house.
10:23Hey, hold it.
10:23You said if we get the money by today, we could buy the house back.
10:26Right?
10:27You can buy the house back.
10:28Bidding will start at $100,000.
10:30$100,000.
10:30Do I hear the $100,000?
10:31This is the exciting part.
10:32Have fun.
10:33Nothing ever seems to go right in the movies, does it?
10:36Just as Happy scrapes together the $275,000 to buy back his grandmother's house,
10:41he finds out that he was sorely misinformed.
10:43He's only earned the right to bid at auction.
10:46When that inevitably falls through,
10:48the final insult comes when none other than the slimy Shooter McGavin snatches the house up for himself.
10:53Go wait in the car, Grandma.
10:55Hey!
10:56What the hell is the matter with you?
10:59Well, real estate speculation is a hobby of mine.
11:02Help.
11:03You lay another finger on me, I burn the house down and piss on the ashes.
11:07What do you want for it, Shooter?
11:09You know what I want.
11:11You off the tour.
11:12That lights a fire under Happy,
11:14and with Virginia's encouragement,
11:16he turns to the last trick up his hockey jersey sleeve.
11:19Shooter's smug disbelief is quickly shattered by one of Happy's most satisfying comebacks,
11:24and boy, does it hit the spot.
11:25You're gonna beat me?
11:27At golf?
11:29Oh, you're on.
11:32You're in big trouble, though, pal.
11:33I eat pieces of shit like you for breakfast.
11:36You eat pieces of shit for breakfast?
11:40No!
11:40Number two.
11:45Happy sends the ball home.
11:47Gary Potter, great to have you on the tour, Happy.
11:49I feel a lot of solid energy coming out of you.
11:52Good, positive aura.
11:53Great, great.
11:54It's all great.
11:55Yeah, man.
11:55Nice to meet you, man.
11:57Is it always like this with the TV cameras and the people and stuff?
12:00Oh, yeah.
12:00A lot of pressure.
12:01You gotta rise above it.
12:03You gotta harness into good energy.
12:05Block out the bad.
12:06Harness, energy, block, bad.
12:08Watch enough Adam Sandler movies,
12:11and you'll start to notice a familiar roster of faces.
12:13And to be clear, we're not complaining.
12:15It's always a treat when Saturday Night Live alum Kevin Nealon shows up.
12:19In Happy Gilmore, he plays Gary Potter,
12:21no relation to the boy wizard.
12:23A well-meaning but clearly off-kilter pro golfer
12:25who offers Happy some, well, let's call it spiritual guidance.
12:29Feel the flow, Happy.
12:30Feel it.
12:31It's circular.
12:32It's like a carousel.
12:33You pay the quarter, you get on the horse.
12:35It goes up and down and around.
12:37Circular.
12:38Circle.
12:39With the music.
12:39The flow.
12:40All good things.
12:42Yeah, all right.
12:43Well, great.
12:43Thanks a lot.
12:44Nice to meet you, man.
12:46Psycho.
12:47As Happy struggles to sink a putt,
12:49Potter serves up a meandering travel metaphor meant to inspire him.
12:52Unsurprisingly, it only makes things worse,
12:55sending Happy into yet another meltdown,
12:57much to the audience's delight.
12:59Son of a bitch, Paul.
13:00Why didn't you just go home?
13:02That's your home.
13:03Are you too good for your home?
13:06Answer me!
13:07Suck my white ass, Paul!

13:24Number 1.
13:27Happy Gilmore vs. Bob Barker
13:29How you doing, Happy?
13:31I'm Bob Barker.
13:32Wow, what an honor.
13:33Nice to meet you.
13:34Looks like you and I are going to be playing together today.
13:37That's funny.
13:39Who am I really playing with?
13:40This is a pro-am, Happy.
13:41Each golfer is playing with a celebrity.
13:43Wow!
13:44You know, Nick Faldo and I won this thing last year,
13:47and I'd like to win it again this year.
13:49All right, I'll do my best.
13:50Ah, the moment you've all been waiting for.
13:53Arguably, Happy Gilmore's most iconic scene.
13:56The all-out brawl between the hot-headed golfer
13:58and the legendary Let's Make a Deal,
14:00their Price is Right host.
14:01Watching an irate Adam Sandler get pummeled
14:04by a famously genteel game show legend is hilarious enough,
14:07but the real punchline is that the cameo earned Barker,
14:10who died in 2023, aged 99,
14:13a whole new generation of fans.
14:15The price is wrong, bitch.
14:20I think you've had enough.
14:30The daytime TV staple later spoofed the scene
14:32on The Bold and the Beautiful,
14:33and even reunited with Sandler for another brawl
14:36during the Night of Too Many Stars autism telethon.
14:39Now that's a good sport.
14:40Couldn't be nice, could you, Bobby, huh?
14:42Which Happy Gilmore moment made you laugh the hardest?
15:02Are you excited for Netflix's Happy Gilmore 2?
15:04Be sure to let us know in the comments below.
15:06Now you've had enough, bitch.
