00:00my name is Garrett and this took place when I was a sophomore in college when I didn't get a dorm
00:16after freshman year I scrambled for off-campus housing long story short I ended up in a co-op
00:22part of a three-house community that was sort of near campus but not really it wasn't ideal but
00:28it was cheap and I didn't have many options plus I had a bike so I didn't really mind the extra travel
00:34time most of the residents were young students like me but there were a few exceptions there
00:40were a handful of alumni one or two TAs and a few older people getting their degrees later on in
00:46life but the person who immediately stood out to me was an older woman who lived in one of the other
00:51houses from what I could tell she was maybe in her late 50s even though she looked a little older
00:58than that she had graying hair and walked with a sort of limp like she had some kind of back injury
01:03she was really quiet and mostly kept to herself and she always had this blank expression on her face
01:09I assumed she had some kind of connection to the university maybe faculty or maybe an alumni but
01:16no one explained and I didn't ask the first time I saw her do something strange was in our common
01:22kitchen which was a little weird to begin with because the two other houses had their own kitchen
01:26so I wasn't sure why she'd be hanging out in hours she wasn't cooking or eating or even talking to
01:32anyone she was just standing there while the rest of us were talking and running around making dinner
01:37and listening to music she didn't try and join in she just watched us blankly I caught eyes with her
01:43a few times and part of me got the feeling that she was watching me specifically even though I knew
01:48that was unlikely no one acknowledged her which I thought was a little weird too maybe they knew
01:54something I didn't later that week I was doing some homework in my room when I saw her again I glanced
02:01out my bedroom window and there she was staring up at me as if that wasn't strange enough by itself
02:08she wasn't even on the sidewalk but rather in the middle of the street it was getting late and it was
02:14decently cold too so she must have been freezing out there I couldn't tell if she was looking into
02:19my window or just in the general direction of the house but I felt like she was staring at me
02:23specifically I don't know why I did it but I waved at her trying to be friendly the moment I did I
02:30instantly regretted it she didn't wave back instead she jumped up and down a few times like she was excited
02:37and then ran towards one of the other houses presumably hers I felt kind of sick not only had
02:44I acknowledged her but I had confirmed that she had been looking into my room the entire time
02:49and even if she hadn't she now knew which room was mine later that night I asked one of my housemates
02:55about her he told me that that woman had always been there and that I should try my best to ignore
03:00her like the rest of them did I inquired further about her but the guy genuinely didn't know anything
03:06and said he was just repeating what someone had told him when he moved in it didn't sit right with
03:11me so I asked around until I got some semblance of an answer one of the seniors in the specific house
03:17she lived in told me that she was associated with the university and was a little kooky but that
03:22she didn't have a history of violence or getting physical I asked him why no one found that as strange
03:27as I did and he told me that they really couldn't control who lived there as that decision was up
03:32to the property manager I wasn't fully satisfied with that answer but there was nothing I could do
03:38so I tried to just block her out of my mind but then it got worse one night I walked out of my room
03:44and nearly ran into her she was in the hallway standing right in front of my door I literally jumped
03:50back because she caught me so off guard it was past midnight on like a Tuesday so the house was mostly
03:56dead she didn't say anything when she saw me she barely even reacted instead she just turned and
04:03walked away as if I were the one who had intruded on her I'm not going to go into every little detail
04:08but there were several more occurrences like that one where I caught her either snooping somewhere
04:13where she had no business being or doing something she had no business doing at some point I lost my
04:19room key all three houses had once been part of the same hotel so all the rooms had personal locks and
04:24keys it was a co-op so most people just left their doors unlocked but I was someone who couldn't
04:30sleep comfortably knowing someone could just walk into my room so losing my key was a big deal
04:35everyone had a spare including me but I was pissed because I'd have to go make a copy of the key and
04:41that was an extra annoyance I couldn't afford at the time a few nights later I woke up randomly in the
04:46night I wasn't sure why at first but then I heard it there was a soft bumping coming from my closet
04:52every 20 seconds or so it sounded like something shifting behind the door like something was
05:02moving inside of my closet I'm not one to scare easily and I'm definitely not one to be helpless
05:07in a dangerous situation so I was going to deal with this myself I quietly got out of bed and took a
05:13deep breath I slowly walked over to the closet trying to keep my breathing under control my heart
05:19was racing in one fluid motion I ripped the closet door open and screamed like a crazy person just as
05:26I expected the woman was in there she had one of my ties wrapped around her neck and her eyes were
05:32wide open she was holding a kitchen knife with her other hand my scream must have startled her because
05:38before I could react she lunged at me with the knife outstretched I screamed again only this one wasn't
05:44pretend it was a scream of pure fear I wrestled her to the ground and was able to disarm her pretty
05:50easily given how frail and small she was that didn't make the situation any less terrifying though
05:56she kicked and fought and bit as I pinned her to the ground screaming the whole time I yelled for help
06:03and I heard some doors slam followed by some of my housemates running down the hall my friend Lee
06:08immediately helped me immobilize the woman and the two of us kept her pinned while someone else called the
06:13police the rest of the night was a blur the police got there quickly and arrested her on the spot
06:18by that point she had stopped screaming but she refused to say anything either which was extremely
06:24unsettling the cops found my room key on her real big shocker there a few weeks later we got our answer
06:32about who she was apparently she was the property manager's sister who he had been letting live there
06:38under the radar she had severe mental health issues and instead of getting her proper care
06:43he had just thrown her into one of the unoccupied rooms I believe the property manager was eventually
06:49arrested for negligence and a slew of other things and rightfully so I honestly blame him so much more
06:56for what happened than her if anything I feel bad for her but my pity won't erase the fact that she tried
07:01to kill me I could have lost my life that night I have no idea why she seemed so interested in me specifically
07:08but I can only hope nothing like that ever happens to me again I'm graduating soon and I'm definitely gonna miss college
07:14but I don't think I'll ever be able to look back at my time here without thinking about that night
07:19this isn't really my story but I essentially watched the whole thing happen so I'm telling it anyway
07:34I've lived in a modest two-story home with my husband Benjamin for the better part of 20 years now
07:40all of our kids are out living their own lives and I couldn't be prouder what I'm about to tell you
07:46happened last year someone had just moved into the house across the street which was really nice
07:51because I was getting sick of looking out at a vacant house all the time I'm retired so I spent a lot
07:57of time on my front porch knitting reading enjoying the weather with my husband you name it I also
08:03listen to a lot of true crime podcasts out there and sometimes I'll just play music the person who
08:09moved into the house across the street was a young guy maybe mid-20s he drove an expensive looking
08:15BMW and always dressed in flashy clothing so I figured he was either well off or seriously
08:20pretending I hope I'm not giving the wrong impression about him he was actually really sweet
08:25he introduced himself to us after a few days his name was Quinn and he was a few years out of college
08:31like I had guessed he was a really bright guy and got along really well with Benjamin they laughed and
08:37talked about sports and Benjamin even dropped a few of his own college stories that I hadn't heard in a
08:42long time Quinn said he worked in the entertainment industry and that he did freelance work for some
08:48internet personality person whatever that means it kind of went over my head but it must have been
08:53lucrative he looked pretty wealthy like I said he talked about stocks with Benjamin and told us about
08:59some of the investments he was making all in all he seems like a nice guy things were normal for a few
09:05months like I said I spent a lot of time on my porch so Quinn would often wave to me when leaving his
09:11house and I always waved back I can't remember exactly when but I started noticing the same
09:17girl going over to Quinn's house every so often she drove a little white convertible and she was
09:22pretty young blondes the type of girl you'd expect a guy like him to date to be frank she dressed a bit
09:28scandalously which I didn't fully appreciate I figured she was his girlfriend maybe checking on
09:34the house while he was out she had her own house key so it made sense it became a regular thing once
09:41maybe twice a week I'd see that car roll up while Quinn was gone she'd go inside stay for a while then leave
09:48I didn't really understand what she was doing but young people date differently these days so I kept my
09:54thoughts to myself then one evening I saw them together Quinn pulled into his driveway with her in the
10:00passenger seat that confirmed it she was his girlfriend just as I had assumed but shortly
10:06after that day things started getting tense at least that's what it seemed like one afternoon I was
10:13out tending to my little garden when I heard shouting from across the street Quinn and the girl were
10:18standing in the driveway yelling at each other I couldn't catch what they were arguing about but I
10:23didn't need to she kept throwing her hands in the air practically spitting her words at him
10:28it looked like she was going to strike him eventually she got in the car slammed the door
10:34and tore off down the road Quinn shook his head and went back inside I don't even think he noticed me
10:40I figured it was a lover's spat every couple fights and it wasn't my place to butt in where I was
10:46unwelcome but then I saw that girl's car in front of his house again when he wasn't home not once not
10:52twice but multiple times I told Benjamin and he said it was rude to pry and that I should just leave
10:59the poor boy alone which I agreed with but then came the night everything went sideways Benjamin
11:05and I were asleep when we woke up to sirens blaring outside we rushed outside joining the handful of
11:11neighbors who had come out to see what was going on Quinn's house was swarming police cars an ambulance
11:17the whole nine we watched as the cops emerged from his house with that girl in handcuffs she didn't
11:23struggle or scream just accepted what was going on and stared ahead with a blank expression we saw
11:30Quinn being rushed outside on a stretcher he was a bloody mess and I gasped at the sight we didn't see
11:37him for a week after that I was worried sick when he finally came back Benjamin and I walked over to
11:43check on him he let us in without hesitation and told us everything apparently that girl her name
11:50was Ellie had confessed to everything making things easy for the police for starters she wasn't supposed
11:56to have his house key she had stolen his spare and made a copy without him knowing according to him
12:02she started asking him for things fancy dinners jewelry expensive trips when he hesitated she got
12:10possessive and angry which was when things started going downhill in their relationship every time she
12:15had shown up unannounced to his house he hadn't been aware she had access to his location through his phone
12:21which I didn't even know was possible she had gone through all of his stuff but worst of all she had planted
12:28hidden cameras in his room every time she went back to his house when he wasn't there she was replacing the
12:33camera batteries and making sure they were still working the argument between them that I overheard
12:38was Quinn's attempt at breaking up with her she refused and Quinn reluctantly agreed to go on a
12:43break Ellie had seen everything through the cameras and the next night she went to his house with a knife
12:50I'm not going to explain the rest you get the idea somehow Quinn managed to get her to the grounds
12:56but not before she seriously injured him the doctor said he was an inch away from needing surgery or dying
13:03Benjamin and I tried to console him but he was visibly shaken
13:06the last thing he said before we left was that he had learned his lesson about flaunting his money
13:12especially around pretty girls
13:13he moved out not long after
13:16he said he didn't feel safe in that house anymore and that his ex had tons of friends just like her
13:21and he didn't feel comfortable with the thought that they might have known where he lived
13:24we never saw him again
13:26I pray to God he's doing okay
13:28no one should ever have to go through something like that
13:31especially not someone as young as him
13:33when I moved into my new place
13:45I was just looking for a fresh start
13:47I won't get into the details
13:49but let's just say I had a bad situation with an ex
13:52that made staying in my old city impossible
13:54I ran into some money early in life
13:57and made some bad decisions about the kind of women I surrounded myself with
14:00lesson learned
14:01the neighborhood I moved to is really nice
14:04low crime, quiet, mostly families
14:07the houses here are really spaced out
14:09which was partially what drew me there
14:11but for some reason
14:13the property next to mine is much closer in proximity
14:15than most of the other properties are to each other
14:18and by the way
14:19that house next door is huge
14:21when I first saw it
14:22I thought I could easily fit a family of 10
14:24that's honestly what I assumed at first
14:27that a big family lived there
14:29grandparents and everything
14:30but I could not have been more wrong
14:32even though I tried to be low key
14:34I wasn't going to be a rude neighbor
14:36I took it upon myself to introduce myself to everyone in the neighborhood
14:40for whatever reason
14:42I decided to introduce myself to my next door neighbors last
14:45I couldn't tell you why
14:47everyone else I met seemed really sweet and genuine
14:50I'd say 90% of them were parents of young children
14:54and yes
14:55they were all slightly intimidating
14:57purely based on how successful they seemed to be
14:59I wasn't too sure how a younger guy like myself
15:02would easily blend into a community like that
15:04but that was more of a personal concern
15:06when I got around to meeting my next door neighbor
15:09my social battery was mostly drained
15:11from having spent the day making small talk with strangers
15:14I knew if I just went back home
15:16I was never going to be as motivated to meet them
15:18so I just sucked it up
15:19and walked up their driveway
15:21I had gotten accustomed to being greeted by someone middle aged
15:24so when a young looking dude in a mullet opened the door
15:27I was a little taken aback
15:29hell he looked even younger than me
15:31which was definitely a shock
15:32I recovered quickly
15:34and went ahead with my new to the neighborhood spiel
15:37as I went on
15:39he flashed me this massive smile
15:41and actually cut me off before I could even finish talking
15:43he said something along the lines of
15:46oh wow
15:46someone who was born in my decade
15:48what a nice surprise
15:49I laughed and told him the same thing
15:52venting to him about how out of place I felt
15:54as a single guy in his late 20s
15:56amongst so many families with kids
15:58he told me not to worry about that
16:00and that most of the people who lived here kept to themselves
16:02which was kind of a relief for me
16:04he introduced himself as Damon
16:07and told me I should come by for a drink sometime
16:09I shrugged my shoulders and said
16:11hell why not right now
16:13to which I expected him to laugh and invite me in
16:15instead though
16:16he looked over his shoulder
16:18like he was scanning his living room
16:19and then he turned back to me
16:21saying he wished he could
16:22but he was busy working
16:23I asked him what he did for work
16:25because it just seemed like a normal follow-up question
16:28to what he said
16:28and he dropped his smile a bit
16:30after a weird stare
16:31he laughed and just said finance
16:33but didn't elaborate any more than that
16:36which I thought was a bit strange
16:37I told him fair enough
16:40and asked if he had any roommates
16:41to my surprise
16:43he told me he lived there alone
16:44which was absolutely insane to me
16:46given how big the house was
16:48we chit-chatted for a few more minutes
16:50and he gave me his number
16:51before going back inside
16:52I was excited that someone my age lived here
16:55especially because he seemed like a really chill guy
16:58but I couldn't get over how odd it was
17:00for someone like that to live all alone
17:02and yeah
17:03I know I was essentially doing the same thing
17:05but you have to keep in mind
17:06my house wasn't even half the size of his
17:08anyway
17:09I went back home
17:10and got on with my life
17:12that was about six months ago
17:14for a few weeks after that
17:16nothing eventful really happened
17:17I texted Damon a few days after
17:20he gave me his number
17:21to try and set something up
17:22but he'd always complain about how busy he was
17:24and how sorry he was that we couldn't hang out
17:26eventually I gave up with him
17:29not in a hostile way
17:30just in a you-do-you kind of way
17:32I'm definitely not the type of person to bend over backwards
17:36for someone who seems disinterested
17:37I never saw anyone coming or going from Damon's place
17:41no visitors
17:42no parties
17:43no girls
17:43nothing
17:44he never even got takeout delivered
17:46which was strange to me
17:47because his car was always in the driveway
17:49I genuinely didn't know what he ate
17:51because I literally never saw him leave the house
17:53the guy lived like a ghost
17:55I work from home
17:57and the office in my house is on the third floor
17:59which overlooks Damon's property
18:01if you're wondering how I knew so much about his living habits
18:03I know it sounds obsessive and a little creepy
18:06but his house was also just a glance away from my monitor
18:09so I couldn't help but look over from time to time
18:12one night
18:13it was a Wednesday night
18:14I remember that distinctly
18:16I woke up around 2am to the sound of loud music
18:19I sleep with my windows open
18:21so that's probably how I woke up so easily
18:24at first
18:25I thought I was imagining it
18:26or it was part of a really vivid dream I was having
18:29but I was wrong
18:30I got out of bed and peeked out my window
18:33and there they were
18:347 or so cars lined up in Damon's driveway
18:37there was no mistaking it
18:39he was having a party
18:40now don't get me wrong
18:42I'm not the type to complain about some noise
18:44I've been to my fair share of house parties
18:46but it was the middle of the week
18:48and the volume was insane
18:49I figured I'd just go over
18:51knock
18:52and ask him to turn it down
18:53I threw on a hoodie and walked over
18:56it was a full blown party
18:58that much was clear from outside
19:00I knocked on the door
19:02but no one answered
19:03I pulled out my phone to text Damon
19:05but I decided against it
19:07knowing he'd probably ignore me
19:08and give me some BS excuse the following morning
19:11I knocked on the door again
19:13harder this time
19:14still nothing
19:15I reached for the handle
19:17half expecting it to be locked
19:19but to my surprise
19:20the door swung open
19:22inside
19:23the first thing I saw
19:24was a pile of shoes in the foyer
19:26at least 10 pairs
19:27but there was something off
19:29there was literally no one in there
19:31I moved further in
19:33expecting to see people in the living room
19:35maybe the kitchen
19:36but it was completely empty
19:38there weren't even any drinks left out
19:40I could hear people over the music
19:42that was playing in the background though
19:44which I didn't understand
19:45but then I really listened to it
19:48and everything hit me all at once
19:50it wasn't even music really
19:52it was a recording
19:53a literal recording of people laughing
19:56yelling
19:57clinking glasses
19:58the whole party was fake
20:00all of it
20:01but that didn't make sense to me
20:03it still didn't explain the shoes
20:05or the cars
20:05there were people in that house
20:08that much was certain
20:09I should have turned around right then
20:11but I needed to know what was going on
20:13I moved discreetly around the house
20:15until I saw a door that was slightly ajar
20:17I gently pushed it open
20:19and it led down to the basement
20:21I'm not sure how I knew
20:23but something told me
20:24what I was looking for was downstairs
20:26it was dark down those stairs
20:28with the exception of a very faint light
20:30coming from somewhere I couldn't see
20:31there was no reason to go down there
20:33I knew that
20:34but I did it anyway
20:36I got to the bottom of the stairs
20:38and looked around
20:39the light was coming from another door
20:42somewhere deeper in the basement
20:43I crept towards it
20:45and as I got closer
20:46I started to pick up on another noise
20:48I hadn't been able to hear earlier
20:50over the music
20:51it sounded almost mechanical
20:53it was this heavy rhythmic grinding
20:56like heavy machinery
20:57or a buzzsaw or something
20:59I got a little closer
21:01close enough to see through the crack
21:03there were three people standing in there
21:05looking across the room
21:06at something that was out of view
21:08they were all older looking guys
21:10significantly older than Damon
21:12they were wearing heavy duty work clothes
21:15and had on these protective goggles
21:16and thick rubber gloves
21:18I also realized
21:19they were wearing what looked like work boots
21:21even though I had seen
21:22all those other shoes upstairs
21:24under different circumstances
21:26I would have assumed
21:27that they were construction workers
21:29I really wanted to see
21:31what they were looking at
21:32but it was too far out of view
21:33after a few seconds of me
21:35just standing there
21:36I started to pick up
21:37on this awful bleach smell
21:39or some kind of cleaning solution
21:41that's what did it for me
21:43I started to feel this awful pit in my stomach
21:45like my life was in danger
21:47I can't explain it
21:49I turned to leave
21:51trying to be as quiet as possible
21:52as I was finding my way back to the stairs
21:55the light from behind me suddenly dimmed
21:57like someone had shut the door behind me
21:59I didn't actually hear the door over the music
22:02but I felt it
22:03I sprinted up the stairs as fast as I could
22:05I ran through the house
22:07and burst out the front door
22:08I didn't run directly to my house
22:11I jumped my own fence
22:12and made it to the backyard
22:13I slipped in through my side door
22:16locking it behind me
22:17my chest was pounding
22:19but under no circumstances
22:20could I let Damon
22:21or any of those other guys
22:23know it was me
22:23who had been snooping around
22:25I gathered myself
22:26and went up to my office
22:28making sure all the lights up there were off
22:30I crouched down below the window
22:32and peeked over at Damon's house
22:34there was no one there
22:36but then
22:37a few minutes later
22:38the front door flew open
22:40and like eight guys poured out
22:41scanning the yard
22:43the driveway
22:43the street
22:44but Damon wasn't with them
22:46I could tell
22:47because everyone looked older
22:48like those first guys I had seen
22:50a few of them looked like
22:52they were arguing about something
22:53but I couldn't make out
22:54what they were saying
22:55one of the men actually shoved
22:57one of the other ones
22:58and I thought they were about to
22:59start fighting in the street
23:01but they didn't
23:02eventually they all went back inside
23:05and the music stopped
23:06soon after that
23:06I stood at the window
23:08trying to make sense
23:09of what had just happened
23:10I thought about calling the cops
23:13but what would I even say
23:14the music wasn't playing anymore
23:16and there was no real crime
23:18I could actually report
23:19the thing I couldn't understand
23:21was how none of my other neighbors
23:22had a problem with the loud music
23:24especially since most of them
23:25had children
23:26I figured if they hadn't been able
23:29to hear it
23:29and I called the police
23:30Damon would know it was me
23:32and the shoes
23:33I had no idea
23:34what that was about either
23:35the people I had seen
23:36were all wearing boots
23:37so did they bring
23:39extra pairs of shoes
23:40just to leave in the foyer
23:41I had too many questions
23:43and I didn't know what to do
23:44so I just went to bed
23:45the next morning
23:47I woke up
23:48and looked out my bedroom window
23:49every single car was gone
23:51including Damon's
23:53I went upstairs
23:54to try and get some work done
23:55but I couldn't concentrate
23:56and found myself
23:57looking over at Damon's house
23:59every five seconds
24:00after a few hours
24:01of his car not being there
24:03I decided to go for a walk
24:04partly to clear my head
24:06but mostly to take
24:07some low-key glances
24:08through his windows
24:09nothing though
24:10days passed
24:12and Damon still didn't return
24:14or his car didn't at least
24:15I was baffled
24:17with every passing day
24:18I still couldn't figure out
24:20how my other neighbors
24:21had been able to sleep
24:22through all the noises
24:23that night
24:23so I just straight up
24:24asked them
24:25I went to a few houses
24:27and asked them
24:27if they had heard the party
24:28he had a few nights ago
24:29no one knew
24:31what I was talking about
24:32even after I told them
24:33which house it was coming from
24:34and how late it was
24:35I thought I was going crazy
24:37that was a few months ago now
24:40the crazy thing
24:41is Damon still hasn't returned
24:42and it's clear
24:43no one is maintaining
24:44his house
24:45as the grass is starting
24:46to get really long
24:47and there's an untouched
24:48pile of packages
24:49leaning against his front door
24:50I don't know
24:51what to make of this
24:52it could be nothing
24:54but I feel like
24:55no one would go
24:56to such lengths
24:56to disguise what they were doing
24:58with a fake party
24:59unless it was something illegal
25:00but would people
25:02going to such lengths
25:03really forget something
25:03as important as
25:04locking the front door
25:05maybe that's what
25:06those guys had been
25:07arguing about
25:08I really have no idea
25:10and the fact that
25:11none of my other neighbors
25:12seemed bothered by it
25:13makes me think
25:13I'm involved in
25:14some huge conspiracy
25:15or something
25:16I know I'm just
25:17being paranoid
25:18but I just have
25:19so many unanswered questions
25:21when Damon returns
25:23if he ever does
25:24I'm debating
25:25whether or not
25:26I should just go
25:26and straight up ask him
