00:02:06He's a ring general so he's able to change the tide in the ring, in the middle of the match

00:02:13Total professional, that's why he's successful
00:02:16My God, if you're a promoter, you got a guy like him

00:02:21He is the game, he's proven that to me, he's proven that to everybody

00:03:20One of my biggest career inspirations was Ric Flair
00:03:23A few weeks ago I wrestled a tag match with Flair as my partner
00:03:27You know and I was like a little kid you know
00:03:30I don't know if he, I don't even know if he understood what that was for me
00:03:35When the match was over I called Flair back to the ring
00:03:38I could see him coming back in the ring not knowing what I was going to do
00:03:41He was looking at me like oh god
00:03:43And he got in the ring and I just told him that you know you call yourself the man
00:03:48And I call myself the game
00:03:50There would be no game
00:03:52I wouldn't be in this ring
00:03:54I wouldn't be the World Wrestling Federation Champion
00:03:58Because of you I am where I am
00:04:02And for that I thank you
00:04:06They thank you
00:04:08The world thanks you
00:04:11And that was the truth
00:04:14And he got emotional
00:04:15He started to cry in the ring
00:04:16And but it was emotional for me too
00:04:18And I meant I told him when I got out back
00:04:20He thanked me and I said I meant every word I said Ric
00:04:22That wasn't just for the people
00:04:23I've got tapes of them probably onion skin thin
00:04:26Because I've watched it so many times I've worn it out
00:04:28He was just a large inspiration for me
00:04:31And a reason for me getting into business
00:04:33What made me admire Flair more than anything
00:04:36Was that no matter what when I saw Flair
00:04:39I left there going wow
00:04:40No matter who he wrestled it was awesome
00:04:43And that's what I wanted to do in his business
00:04:45I wanted to be the performer that
00:04:47You knew you were going to see something when you went to his match
00:04:50And then take that and make that what that character was
00:04:57I got a ton of respect for Triple H
00:04:59Because I knew him back when we were both in WCW
00:05:01And I was actually there before him
00:05:02And here comes this guy with this long blonde hair
00:05:04Terrorizing is when he came into WCW
00:05:07All jacked up in great physical condition
00:05:10And as soon as I saw him
00:05:11You know I said I think this guy is going to be pretty good
00:05:13Some of the things he did in the ring
00:05:14His movement and he had some natural instincts
00:05:16I first met him in 1993
00:05:18In WCW
00:05:20And he just knew straight away that
00:05:22He got something special
00:05:24Everything he does means something else
00:05:26He doesn't bother doing it
00:05:28He was very influenced by Ric Flair
00:05:30Many people feel that this youngster terrorizing
00:05:33Reminds you of Ric Flair
00:05:35When he first started this sport
00:05:37And he had the offer to come
00:05:39His contract was coming up
00:05:40And he had the offer to come to the WWF
00:05:43And he asked me what he should do
00:05:44And I said go
00:05:45And he said well we've got this little thing going

00:05:49He needed to work every single night
00:05:52Which I knew he would get that opportunity here
00:05:55I think Triple H evolved into what he is today
00:05:57Just going back from when he first came
00:05:59In the World Wrestling Federation
00:06:00And he was Hunter Hurst Hemsley
00:06:02He was a snobby type hill from Greenwich Connecticut
00:06:04He was a great technician
00:06:05Everything he did in the ring was fine
00:06:07His transition stuff
00:06:08All that was good
00:06:09But to me he really put it together
00:06:11When he broke away from Kevin Nash and Shawn Michaels
00:06:13Kind of that click thing
00:06:14There was kind of a buddy system there
00:06:16There was an incident that happened in Madison Square Garden
00:06:18That a lot of people don't know about
00:06:19But it was kind of a behind the scenes type deal
00:06:21Where he just got himself into a little bit of trouble with the office
00:06:24He was real close friends with Diesel, Razor Ramon and Shawn Michaels
00:06:30A couple of those guys had decided to leave the WWF for financial reasons
00:06:35Whatever reasons
00:06:36They kind of went out and showed this solidarity amongst themselves
00:06:39Over our business and over our product
00:06:41They compromised our business and our largest market
00:06:45Anyway it ended up he was left holding the bag for the whole incident
00:06:50He took all the heat for what happened in the garden
00:06:53That's when he started impressing me because he took the heat
00:06:55He realized that he did something stupid
00:06:57Learned from his mistake
00:06:59And he corrected it
00:07:01By taking the heat
00:07:02Taking the abuse that he had to take
00:07:04Earning these guys respect
00:07:05And you know that was the start to tell me that that guy was something special
00:07:10And he did become the game
00:07:13Vince McMahon has a saying
00:07:16If you want to be successful in this business
00:07:19You have to be a student of the game
00:07:21I was cutting a promo one time with JR
00:07:24And it really wasn't a promo
00:07:25It was an interview he was doing with me
00:07:26And it was kind of a half shoot interview

00:22:54people in that building that weren't freaking out freaking out i remember uh thinking that this match was
00:23:01over you know i mean we're the only business in the world where you know the match keeps going when
00:23:06one guy's knocked out without a ring general like triple h in there uh the match would have would have
00:23:11gone downhill very quickly that match needs to thank triple h for keeping the calm head because i mean
00:23:18i watched the match the next day and even knowing that kurt was out you couldn't tell that he was out
00:23:23and we got through the match and it was great and it wasn't all me you know rock was there too
00:23:28and kurt you know god he's a guy unconscious in the ring just just going and he's new too he's not
00:23:34even like a veteran or anything he's a brand new guy my hat's off to him for that you know but that
00:23:39was a team effort we all pulled it off and rocky and i did what we did and and uh there's a magic
00:23:45there and it just happened and uh you know when it was over it was great and everybody was relieved
00:23:52a ring general is a guy that doesn't put up with any crap keeps the guys in line with his business
00:23:57business business when it's play it's play i feel safe with hunter and i feel safe with the
00:24:02undertaker i feel safe with austin you you rely on them sometimes if you do get lost you just look
00:24:09around and they'll they'll pick you right back up that's why that's why you call those guys the general
00:24:14of the ring i've been in the ring with some great ring generals and you know when you are i was lucky in
00:24:20this business trained by killer kowalski from day one and then when i left there and i went to wcw terry
00:24:26taylor jody hamilton they polished me but from day one with walter i was taught the
00:24:35art of what we do and that is the ability to go out in the ring and work i was taught from day one
00:24:44don't talk to that guy just go in the ring and do it just look at him when he looks at you when he
00:24:50stares through you the cold stare the stare that says that you know i can kill you at any time you
00:24:58know it is a bit intimidating you know when you have a guy that big i mean let's face it the guy's
00:25:03six four 260 pounds and he's everything he says he is um it can be a little bit scary

00:25:52undertaker i don't have more respect for anybody in our business than i do for him he's the guy
00:25:58so it was for me to go to wrestlemania against the undertaker and that was a thrill for me it was an
00:26:03honor for me at that point in time and we had a hell of a match so it was even better the triple h
00:26:10has definitely earned my respect in my opinion he is the game he's everything that he says he is
00:26:17and uh you know i don't throw praise lightly wrestlemania was uh it was special to both of us
00:26:24for completely opposite reasons i think a lot of people wanted to write me off due to injuries
00:26:31i had a lot to prove well i don't feel like i have anything to prove to anybody anymore but
00:26:36to myself that coming home through the astrodome to be in the ring with somebody who
00:26:41i feel is that talented i got a lot of emotion out of that match that i hadn't had in a few years
00:26:48which is good to know i can still you know get those feelings for him it was the first time that
00:26:53we'd ever wrestled in a major event together so i'm sure that he wanted to know how he was going to
00:27:00measure up against me it's easy for me to say he is the game because he is and he proved it at
00:27:07wrestlemania yeah he lost i beat him right in the middle of the ring but i tell you what that night
00:27:13the respect that i didn't have for him he earned that night he went out and performed at a level
00:27:18that i expected and he did it with you know all the style and grace of a top wwf superstar
00:27:28one of the things that people don't realize about athletes they're like uh they're like race cars
00:27:32you know and in the wwf it's no different it's actually more so i think than any other business
00:27:36i've ever been in we have no off season we have no downtime we're in the road 200 days a year little
00:27:42sleep food's messed up get in the gym when you can you know you're in the ring every night it's it's a
00:27:48tough business physically a tough business and the higher you go on the card the more the ante gets up
00:27:55you know what i mean because if you're willing to do it and there are some guys that get to the top
00:27:59and say you know what i'm there now don't give me any more appearances i don't want to make
00:28:05this or that you know i want to work less and that's fine other guys except more i've never been
00:28:12a say no guy i believe that when you get to that level your job is to do it all because now you
00:28:19represent every single person in that company and you're responsible for everybody in there in one way
00:28:24or the other and it's your job that if they need a guy to go do this you go do it and if they're
00:28:29going to ask you to do it you go do it if they're going to ask you to go overseas you go do it if
00:28:33they're going to ask you to be on this show you go do it if it means taking your day off you do it
00:28:38the following tag team contest is scheduled for one fall and it is for the world wrestling federation
00:28:43tag team championship i've been redlining for a long time a long time by the time we got to that match
00:28:51in san jose with stone cold and myself against uh benoit and jericho i've been pushing the engine
00:28:59hard for a long time and it kept dumping the sdp in there and you know what i mean buying more time
00:29:05falls and jericho it's gonna be over awesome's gonna tap out and there's triple h damn it that match
00:29:14wasn't i did nothing ridiculous in it i mean i hit a guy from behind just planted my leg and it just
00:29:20engine blew i shot a piston through my leg you know what i mean it was just that was it and uh
00:29:26i knew the second i did it i hit jericho from behind boom when i hit him it was like i got hit in the
00:29:30knee with a a hot bat or something like that i mean it just was a burn and that burn then went
00:29:37like a just it was i mean instantaneous but your mind worked so fast at that moment you know it was like
00:29:42hot at my knee and then i just felt the hot run up my leg and it felt like something just moved up my
00:29:48thigh and uh i knew as soon as i went down yeah i just tore my quad you know i'm hoping that it
00:29:54wasn't i'm hoping maybe it was just a really bad cramp or something you know i rolled out to the floor
00:30:00to go after jericho and couldn't even put my weight on it he was going to come and grab me
00:30:06uh we go and fight on onto the table and as i was waiting on the floor it was seemed like a
00:30:12inordinate amount of time that i was waiting for him i was thinking is there something going on that
00:30:17i did forget something do i not know something then i turned around i saw him kind of limp out of
00:30:22the ring kind of on one on one leg and i thought oh man he hurt his knee people asked me why did i
00:30:28continue why didn't i just lay down and say that was it never even entered my mind i never thought
00:30:34about it and we were on the floor going onto the table i said are you all right he said no i'm hurt
00:30:38and i said then let's not do the next thing which was me putting the walls of jericho on him on the
00:30:44on the table and he said just do it triple h is gonna pedigree jericho's face right through our
00:30:50table or maybe not he put me in those walls of jericho and you know if you've ever been in that
00:30:57it's it's just all it's pressure from your chest to your knees and it's all just pulling and uh it was
00:31:06fairly uncomfortable let's just say that i wanted to stop but uh the superstar the triple h is and
00:31:12and and and he had his mind made up to do what he was to accomplish what he was going to do out there
00:31:17and he did and and hey done it i'll never know today but he was he was really hurt bad
00:31:22triple h has got the damn sledgehammer not this again no
00:31:28triple h hit austin inadvertently boy the second it was over and benoit tackled me through the ropes
00:31:33and i got on the floor and i just i remember i i don't remember actually doing it but i remember
00:31:38seeing it on the videos just as soon as i hit the floor i just curled up in the fetal
00:31:42position you know just holding my leg in the in the fetal position and i knew i was a mess
00:31:46and uh chris our trainer ran out as soon as the match was over and that he came up to me and he
00:31:52jokes about this all the time he ran up to me and he said what happened i said i tore my quad
00:31:57when i got down there uh hunter was complaining that he said he tore his quad which you know i mean that's
00:32:03kind of a not a normal injury to do i thought that it was like a knee injury but he kept on
00:32:15emphatically saying that i tore my quad i tore my quad he was amazed that i knew what i'd done you know
00:32:22just i knew it right then i knew it they helped me up to the top of the ramp and and uh you know being
00:32:28the macho guy in front of all the boys that i was i actually went down the stairs by myself you know
00:32:35like holding the railings and stuff then they put me on a stretcher and uh we went right i mean i went
00:32:41literally in my gear over to the uh mri center with the doctor from the san jose sharks and uh they told
00:32:48me it was torn but i couldn't see how badly it's funny the guy from san jose wanted to do the surgery
00:32:52there and i wouldn't you know i just i wanted to go see dr andrews he's the man hey doc man what are
00:33:01you doing i don't know you're gonna tell me how did this happen i was in the ring i went to hit a guy
00:33:07from behind i planted my planted my leg as i hit him and it just popped just popped i went down i could
00:33:13you know couldn't really stand by i finished the match another five minutes or so and then uh
00:33:18finished the match yeah it probably wasn't the smartest thing in the world to do but
00:33:22but yeah i finished the match and then i went right from the ring right to get the mri done
00:33:26how could you stand on it i didn't too much i was standing mostly on the other one to be honest all
00:33:31i felt was like you said just shot it felt like something shot here and zipped up my thigh yeah it
00:33:37did yeah tore a big hole in your quadriceps tendon right here yeah it's torn from right there to right
00:33:42there you can you know it's all swollen now so but you got a defect right here
00:33:50you know that has to be operated on huh and it's not like that little scope deal we did on that
00:33:55thing either what am i looking at got to open it up here and repair it all back you got to be on
00:34:01crutches six weeks and what am i looking at time wise to get back in the ring for you about half the
00:34:07time of anybody else it takes about four months for something like that to heal and what we plan
00:34:12on doing is trying to get you operated on tomorrow he's a troublemaker i'm incredibly nervous um it's
00:34:26pretty major surgery reattaching all those muscles you know to the knee and i'm sure he'll be fine but
00:34:34yeah i'm nervous
00:34:40is this anything i can expect i didn't know what to expect
00:34:46it was a pretty severe quadriceps rupture and it was sort of tricky because when you open the skin
00:34:52looking for the defect uh it was a top part of the quadriceps was still intact but the main part
00:34:59was torn out underneath and so it was real hard to try to identify what had happened it was quite
00:35:03amazing once you saw how this was torn and it could have easily been missed uh with with looking
00:35:09in opening the skin up we thought we'd see a big hole or defect and and we had to go underneath to
00:35:14really find the tear so we're glad we were able to identify it and we had good tissue and we got a good
00:35:20strong repair put it right back to the kneecap with big heavy sutures
00:35:24the first hurdle of course is the first week for the skin and soft tissues to begin to heal
00:35:34first week to two weeks and then maximum protection phase is about four weeks and then
00:35:40he'll reach a fairly good healing with tensile properties at four months so we'll see how he does
00:35:47and got a lot of work in front of him now my work's basically over so i'll turn it over to the patient and
00:35:52to the uh to kevin wilk and the rehab specialist i think the first thing i'm going to say to triple
00:35:57h is that it's over and now he's just going to get better when i got injured and they told me how
00:36:03bad it was after my surgery i never thought of anything else other than well looks like i'm not
00:36:09leaving birmingham until this is better i'll move here i'll live in this hotel i'll come to rehab at
00:36:15nine in the morning when the place opens and i'll be there until six at night when it closes
00:36:18and i'll do every single thing i possibly can do for this leg to get it better
00:36:36as far as rating triple h as a rehab patient i'd say he's probably one of the highest patients i've
00:36:42ever worked with just from a motivational standpoint you know you ask him to do 10 reps and he does 20.
00:36:47he does his work he wants to do more and a full recovery is obviously what his goal is he wants
00:36:52to get back out there and and uh prove to the guys that he's he's back at 110 percent
00:37:04you know it's tough eight months and you know the first week i was in the hospital i think i was in
00:37:08the hospital for five or seven days you know i'm in birmingham it's not like i'm at home with
00:37:14everybody i know around me you're there by yourself and your careers in question and it's tough sometimes
00:37:21you know it's really tough it gives me a different perspective on things when guys get hurt now i try
00:37:25to give them a call you know because you don't realize how much that means to you until you're the
00:37:29one laying down it was a difficult thing but you set little goals for yourself and you just go day by
00:37:34day one of the funny things is the beauty of the wwf is that uh my room had horrible cable i was in a
00:37:43very nice hotel but it had horrible cable with like maybe 10 channels and it didn't get either station
00:37:51that our show was on you know didn't get upn or tnn the wwf sent somebody down to birmingham and put
00:37:57a satellite dish on my balcony you know and uh i had a satellite dish with all the movie channels
00:38:04complete with the porno and everything it was sweet
00:38:10one of the things that i learned later uh from dr andrews was that very few people actually ever
00:38:16returned from a quad tear uh he actually couldn't think of anybody that's how few so i'm glad he told
00:38:22me that at the end right before i was ready to come back and telling you at the beginning it would
00:38:27have been uh emotionally difficult to take but uh you know now he at least knows one
00:38:36did you forget me
00:38:39did you forget about my rage my fury my wrath my vengeance your hell soon very soon you will remember
00:38:50just how this game is played a lot of people got pissed off about this was the vengeance pay-per-view
00:39:00which was december had my picture on the poster had me in the ads what people don't realize is that
00:39:06that planning of that stuff takes months to plan out it's done a few months ahead of time and at the
00:39:11time they had asked dr andrews do you think there's any possibility that he could make an appearance on
00:39:17this december pay-per-view and you know it might be a possibility well they went ahead with the might
00:39:24be a possibility scenario full-fledged you know with late it's going to be on december and uh
00:39:31as december got closer and closer it was like listen i'm not going to be able to make december
00:39:36i'm not gonna be able to wrestle could i do a run-in maybe but it wouldn't be a fast run-in let me put it
00:39:41that way but you know i physically was in no condition to and as it came even closer the doctor was like
00:39:45look i don't want you in the ring i don't want you near the ring you're gonna you could tear that
00:39:50still you know it's not it's close but it's not you know you you still need to be stronger you're not
00:39:56ready there's a lot of questions to be asked and you want to make sure you get the most out of it that
00:40:00you can so you you want to do it at just the right time and january 7th was the right time
00:40:06it is the first raw of the new year and where else but new york city madison square garden is sold out
00:40:16and we welcome you to wwf raw what a night this is going to be as we all know the anxiously awaited
00:40:24return of one of the most controversial yet celebrated competitors in the game triple h live tonight
00:40:31when you're gone there's so many doubts go through your mind you know god will they remember me
00:40:38will they care i knew going into it because as the weeks went on i could feel it building with the
00:40:44video and the wwf set up the return so well but i could have never in my wildest dreams prepared for
00:40:52what i was about to get at madison square garden from the second the fans were in there they were
00:40:57chanting triple h i mean it was before the show started that i was hearing chants go through the
00:41:02building and then during the show it would start and as the show went on it kept going and it just
00:41:07kept building through the show and when they hit that bumper right before we went to commercial that
00:41:12said next they erupted and i was at the top of gorilla position where we go out just waiting and thinking
00:41:20god that was unbelievable the response i just got when we came out of commercial i remember the music
00:41:29hitting the reaction being so strong i turned back and vince and stephanie were standing there and i went
00:41:34mother and it like took my breath away i walked out and it like tripled it was off the charge
00:41:50of the game

00:42:14This isn't as loud as in a sustained runner I have ever heard in Madison Square Garden.
00:42:26It has been eight more months of Hell Ace's rehabilitation to repair the torn,
00:42:36partners have bustled, the game has returned to the World Wrestling Federation.
00:42:52I've been to a lot of loud ball games and WWF events and all the way back to the 70s from doing wrestling.
00:43:00I don't know that I've ever heard an ovation, just an animalistic, guttural,
00:43:06we really feel for you, we want you back, we're embracing you.
00:43:10Got to be one of Triple H's most memorable nights in his life.
00:43:14Not just his career, but in his life that was special.
00:43:19My entrance was like five and a half minutes long or something like that.
00:43:22They had played like three times through on the track and the longer I stayed out there they just kept coming to me.
00:43:28My plan was to hit a couple of corners and start my promo.
00:43:32I mean I hit all four corners, they wouldn't stop.
00:43:34I went to the ropes, they wouldn't stop.
00:43:36I mean it was just, it just kept coming and coming.

00:50:03You have to have a hobby and it's bodybuilding.
00:50:05And they'll be like, yeah, but that's like work.

00:50:11I think I was always impressed by guys, bigger guys, guys that were larger than life.
00:50:20You know, like that big muscular.
00:50:22There was just a power that impressed me about that.
00:50:25I think that's one of the things I liked about wrestling.
00:50:28As I got older and I was still in watching wrestling, I also started seeing bodybuilders
00:50:35and seeing like, who's that guy?
00:50:37You know, and it's very impressive to me.
00:50:38And when I was 14 one time, I went, I just went into a gym one day with a friend of mine.
00:50:43There were these huge guys in there and I was like, oh, this place is great.
00:50:46They give you the week pass.
00:50:47You know, I went in there and worked out for a week and I was hooked.
00:50:49Over the last few years, I've had opportunity to do a lot of things.
00:50:54I've been able to do commercials for bodybuilding supplements and the people from Weider called
00:51:00and asked if I would like to say something before the Mr. Olympia.
00:51:03To go to the Mr. Olympia, which is the biggest show in bodybuilding, I was thrilled to do it.
00:51:12One of the other things I did that's really cool is I'm going to be on the cover of Flex,
00:51:15which is one of the biggest bodybuilding magazines.
00:51:18First time ever that Flex has put a non-bodybuilder on the cover.
00:51:27So, you know, we've never had a celebrity non-bodybuilder on the cover at all.
00:51:31The other day, I was doing the interview for it and Peter McGuff, the editor-in-chief,
00:51:34said, you make us laugh at the Olympics.
00:51:36He said, clearly, you're the biggest celebrity there.
00:51:39Everybody knows who you are, but you walk around like a little kid looking at everybody like,
00:51:42oh, look at it. You know, I'm like in awe of them.
00:51:48Coming up, I'm going to do a workout video. It's going to be just kind of like a fly-on-the-wall,
00:51:57see-me-train type thing.
00:51:59What gave me the idea to do that was going to gyms all around the country.
00:52:02You know, we're on the road 200 days a year. I'm in a different gym every day.
00:52:05I go to these gyms and meet people, and I get more kids say, dude, you're the only reason I work out,
00:52:12or you're my whole inspiration for training.
00:52:14To think that I inspired a kid to pick up weights and change his life, that's a pretty big deal.
00:52:20I'm lucky I get to do what I love to do every single day, and that inspires somebody.
00:52:25That's the ultimate honor. You can touch somebody else's life through what you do.
00:52:28I mean, just a frickin' wrestler. You know?

01:14:48Me and Triple H are basically on the same exact page.
01:14:51My personal opinion, he's one of the most dominating guys here in the World Wrestling Federation.

01:15:01He's the guy that can, even he can make a referee a superstar.
01:15:05Every match is a story.
01:15:07He tells good stories.
01:15:09There was a time when it was Ric Flair.

01:15:14And then he's took it to another level.
01:15:16And everything he does is precise and spot on.
01:15:20There's nothing that's not believable.
01:15:22He anticipates, as well as anybody I've seen in a long time, what the next move needs to be.
01:15:26He's a ring general.
01:15:28He's just a class guy that has taken the time to really develop a skill or a style
01:15:33that I think is just more him naturally than something he's developed.
01:15:37Just the way he carries himself.
01:15:38He's a very classy guy.
01:15:40I didn't get in the business to be an image.
01:15:44I got in the business because I wanted to be the best.
01:15:47If my career would have been over May 21st, I had a hell of a run.
01:15:52If I came back and Madison Square Garden had been the only show I got to do, that would have been worth it.

01:16:00For me to be able to get in the ring and cut promos face to face with Hulk Hogan, I think there's a magic to it for the fans.

01:16:45One of the things that I learned early in my career was to step back and realize where you are and what you're doing.
01:16:52I've always remembered to do that.
01:16:54And it's been a big thing for me to go to WrestleMania and have it be sold out in the main event,
01:17:00in the match for the title, to become the undisputed WWF champion three months or so after my return
01:17:06from what a lot of people thought I'd never come back from,
01:17:09and just to step back and see that was an awesome thing.
01:17:13To be standing in the ring last year when it was Motorhead playing me to the ring,
01:17:16and I was standing in front of that sold out Houston Astrodome.
01:17:20It was just the ultimate.
01:17:21Things that you'll never, ever forget.
01:17:23I've been places, seen things, and done stuff that most people could only dream of.
01:17:28And I remember all of them sharply.
