A 50-year-old woman died after the car she was driving skidded into a lake near the University Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) roundabout on Monday (July 21) morning.

Kota Samarahan district police chief Supt Damataries Launtin said the victim's daughter, a 17-year-old with special needs, survived.

00:00A 50-year-old woman died after the car she was driving plunged into a lake near the University

00:13Superintendent Damataris Lontin said the victim has been identified as Nu Sharifa Lucia Abdullah.
00:22Her daughter, a 17-year-old with special needs, survived the 10.40 a.m. incident.
00:28Preliminary investigations found that the victim was travelling from Desa Ilmu to Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan
00:35Mwaratuang via the road within the Unimas area. Upon reaching the lake area near the Unimas roundabout,
00:43the vehicle is believed to have stopped momentarily by the roadside on a grassy patch before veering
00:48into the lake. The victim's daughter was able to escape from the vehicle safely before being rescued
00:54by bystanders. However, Nu Sharifa was unable to escape. She was extricated from the submerged car
01:01about 20 minutes later and pronounced dead at the Prima Health Centre at 11.51 a.m. while receiving
01:09treatment. Her remains have been sent to the Sarawak General Hospital Forensics Unit for a post-mortem.
01:16Damataris said the case is being investigated under Section 41, Subsection 1 of the Road Transport Act,
01:231987.
