Penang woman crushed to death by container called mother with dying breath

Crushed under a cargo container, Lee Zi Rou summoned the last of her strength to call her mother on her handphone.  Her mother, 42-year-old Lim, frantically asked her daughter where she was but was met with silence.   Lee died when the car she was driving was crushed by a container at the Jalan Bukit Tengah traffic light junction on Wednesday (Nov 13). 00:17I said, Mummy, it hurts.

00:20She shouted and I said, where are you?

00:24I knew something was wrong with her.

00:28She said she couldn't make a sound.

00:31I was waiting at the double-mind.

00:52The 21-year-old victim died when the car she was driving was crushed by a container

00:57at the Jalan Bukit Tengah traffic light junction in Bukit Mertajam on Wednesday.

01:02The container had toppled onto her car when the lorry negotiating a sharp left turn

01:07went out of control.

01:09Another car, which also hit by the container, was not as badly damaged.

01:13However, its driver, 25-year-old Tan Cho Teng, was seriously injured and rescued

01:19by passers-by and sent to the hospital.

01:22Lim said a member of the public picked up her daughter's phone and eventually

01:26told her the location of the crash scene.

01:46The 51-year-old lorry driver has been remanded for four days until Sunday

01:51to help with police investigation.

01:53The Bukit Mertajam Magistrate's Court granted the remand order.

01:57Police said the driver was being investigated under the Road Transport Act

02:01for causing death by reckless driving.
