00:00Down Phoenix, Arizona. This is boxing. This is Top Rank. Presented by Hall of Fame boxing promoter, Mr. Bob Arum.
00:09This bout is scheduled for 12 rounds for the WBO Featherweight Championship of the World.
00:19Our judges at ringside, Tim Cheatham, Dennis O'Connell, and Zachary Young.
00:25And the man in charge at the sound of the bell, Mr. Chris Flores.
00:32Introducing first out of the blue corner with head trainer Ismael Asalas.
00:39He weighed in at 125.6 pounds, wearing black trunks with blue trim.
00:48His record, 14 victories with two defeats. Nine of those victories coming by way of knockout.
00:57He is a two-time Olympic gold medalist.
01:02He is the former WBO Featherweight Champion of the World from Siu Tuegos, Cuba, and fighting out of Miami, Florida, Robesi El Tren Ramirez.
01:21Introducing out of the red corner, presented in association with Zanfor Promotions, with head trainer Manny Robles.
01:38He weighed in at 125.7 pounds, wearing white trunks with green and red trim.
01:48His record, perfect. 25 fights, 25 victories.
01:5521 of those victories coming by way of knockout.
02:00He is making his second defense of his world title.
02:05He is the reigning, defending, WBO Featherweight Champion of the World from Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico,
02:19Rafael El Divino Espinosa.
02:25Yeah!
02:26Yeah!
02:46What a crowd here in Phoenix, packed for these two world title fights.
02:52We start with the featherweights.
03:05Remember in their first go-round, Espinosa, who was little known.
03:11We knew the glossy record, but it was against limited competition.
03:15Nobody knew what to expect.
03:16Timmy, he came out.
03:18He boxed well.
03:19He started to outwork Roblesi Ramirez, who was a very fast-paced early on.
03:25What do you expect in the early rounds here?
03:28Well, in the final meeting, Espinosa told us that he's not starting at round one.
03:34He's starting at round 13.
03:36He said he's going to get off to a quick start.
03:38He's going to do the same thing he did in the first fight.
03:41How long point, walk forward, make sure that he puts the pressure on Roblesi.
03:50As far as where he left off in the first fight, was having scored a knockdown in round 12.
03:56Already, right now, Roblesi Ramirez, already starting to go down to the body.
04:06That's something new.
04:07He didn't do that the first time around.
04:10He was looking for the head shot.
04:11But you see the redness right now on the chest of Espinosa already from that single body shot.
04:17There it is again.
04:18And what that body shot's going to do, Tess, it's going to set up the head shot.
04:25Eventually, you're going to start seeing the hands of Espinosa start to drop.
04:29And when that happens, expect the shot over the top from Roblesi.
04:366'1 to 5'6.
04:39A 6.5-inch reach advantage for Espinosa.
04:43There's that right hand to the body again, just touching him there.
04:48The feet get tangled right there.
04:50And Southpaw versus Orthodox, the lead feet, they're lined up on the same side.
04:55So a lot of times you're battling for foot position to get your foot on the outside
05:02to be able to line up your backhand, the freehand, right down the middle.
05:08Every now and then, your feet get tangled up.
05:10Hey, hey, stop, stop.
05:11Watch that elbow.
05:12Go, you threw an elbow.
05:13The warning from Chris Flores on the elbow.
05:16He gets a warning to the champ as Ramirez continues to circle to his left on the outside,
05:23touching him with that lead Southpaw jab to the body.
05:26I think that's interesting that Ramirez is moving towards that right hand.
05:34He's moving away from that jab hand.
05:36And yet he hasn't been in the path of danger of Espinosa throwing it.
05:44There's a left hand to the body again, right to that chest, targeting that sternum, as you noted early on, Timmy.
05:49Yes, he is, he's setting up his attack, and he's slowly trying to zap the energy.
05:55You know, that pays good dividends down the stretch when you start committing to the body early.
06:01Next thing you know, your opposition isn't that strong as they were early on
06:09when you start to zap that energy by going down to the body.
06:16Yes, it moves.
06:17Two-punch combination coming to the end of round number one.
06:21The rematch for the WBO featherweight championship of the world.
06:25No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
06:26No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
06:34Robesi Ramirez had a 10-8 connect advantage in round number one.
06:40Joe Tessitore, Tim Bradley, Bernardo Osuna with you ringside.
06:44Back-to-back world title fights, the first of two right here.
06:47Top-ranked boxing on ESPN, the night of rematches.
06:51That first round
06:55was a great
06:57round for Ramirez. Just draw your
06:59attention for a moment down below because
07:01the official weigh-in, obviously they come in
07:03under the limit of 126 pounds
07:05but look at the rehydration
07:07and the weigh-in tonight for the
07:096'1 frame of Espinoza
07:11checking in at nearly 145
07:13pounds, 144.6.
07:16That just
07:17tells you that he wants to bully.
07:19That's what he's looking for. He's looking to
07:21use that weight advantage and bully
07:23Ramirez, but Ramirez continues
07:25to continuously is picking
07:27up his feet and changing his location.
07:29He's not standing there. He's being
07:31an elusive target right now
07:33with controlling his range and
07:35distance and making
07:36Espinoza reach and miss
07:39with shots.
07:42Remember
07:43last time out, Espinoza
07:44jumped out in front, four rounds
07:47to zip before the fifth round when Ramirez
07:49scored a knockdown and also
07:51Espinoza twisted his ankle
07:53in that fifth round.
07:54There's that sweeping left hand right across the belt
07:57line again from Robesi
07:59Ramirez, the two-time Olympic gold medalist,
08:01the former recent
08:02belt holder in the WBO
08:05at 126 pounds.
08:06See the pace is being slowed by Ramirez
08:10again with lateral movement
08:12moving to predominantly to his left
08:14and
08:16Espinoza
08:18is not sure what to do right now.
08:20He's attempted two right hands
08:22that missed
08:24and he's trying to get his
08:26jab working, but no combinations
08:28are landing at the moment for him.
08:30This is the perfect pace for Ramirez.
08:32Again, investing
08:44in that body test.
08:45Yeah, both men firing off
08:46their power hand.
08:48Ramirez, the shorter
08:48punch, left left hand
08:50going to that
08:51midsection.
08:53Starting to see
08:54Espinoza starting to react
08:55to the faints of Ramirez.
08:57Ramirez is standing
08:57extremely low,
08:58being hard to hit,
08:59shrinking in his target areas.
09:02going to split the guard
09:05that time.
09:07Went up top
09:08with the left hand.
09:13There's a long right hand
09:15from Espinoza.
09:16With the uppercut first,
09:17Tess,
09:18he told us
09:18in the fighter means
09:19he's going to be looking
09:20for that uppercut.
09:20He said he's exposed
09:21because he leans down in front.
09:24But at the same time,
09:25he has to make sure
09:26that he throws it
09:27at the right range
09:27because if he throws it
09:28too far away,
09:30he can get clipped
09:31with that big left hand.
09:32Another left uppercut
09:33came in moments ago.
09:34Good action
09:34in the final minute
09:35of round number two.
09:37Let's go.
09:37Go!
09:46The $10.
09:48The $10.
09:51The $10.
09:51You're counter-gruncting, you're counter-gruncting.
09:54You're counter-gruncting.
09:55Discipline.
09:56Lens a more.
09:58Vienes el tercer round y después, después, vamos a empezar a presentar la pelea.
10:02Empieza a buscar y a tapar la salida sin seguirlo.
10:05¿De acuerdo?
10:06Sin seguirlo.
10:07Empieza a buscar de la derecha.
10:09Bro, bro, bro.
10:11Let us move.
10:12We're talking one side of five.
10:13We're looking for a right-hand side.
10:15We're looking for a right-hand side.
10:16Okay?
10:17We're looking for a right-hand side.
10:18We're working for a right-hand side.
10:19Hmm.
10:20No.
10:21No, no, no.
10:24liner vamos allá.
10:25Yup, Maybelee.
10:43Getting set for round number three here in Phoenix.
10:46crowd coming out two world championship fight rematches good start to this one espinosa and
10:53ramirez tim we heard the warning from chris flores about the elbow yeah i mean ramirez
10:58told us in the fighter means he was worried about that he said he got clipped in the last round in
11:03their first fight with elbows and you see right there you see espinosa trying to get range and
11:08get distance trying to create some space but that sharp elbow is right there near the head and eyes
11:15of ramirez got to be careful the referee's gonna have to look out for that especially on the inside
11:21bernardo what are you hearing i was speaking with manny roblez and i talked to him about how low
11:27robezi is fighting this fight he says look that's because he's trying to set up the counter so he's
11:31got to keep him on the end of the jab and on the outside so he can't reach him on the counter of
11:35course that will be critical to his success there's a right hand that goes to the body that was well
11:40placed yeah and i like i like the the change in strategy right here from espinosa now he's not
11:48looking for the head he's actually looking for the body now you saw the cut off right hand
11:53try to cut off that way that ramirez continuously is moving towards his right hand
12:02ramirez right now complaining about low blows however those shots are right on the belt line
12:10left hand that goes to the body again
12:16it's currently been a point of strategy nice swivel jab right there
12:21by ramirez called espinosa attention you saw his legs
12:25oh
12:33i know mark prebill detailed it a lot in the lead up to this fight but that old axiom that
12:38once you become a world champion you become 30 percent better many looking at espinosa saying maybe 50
12:43better just the confidence rising up and then the last performance that we saw so much belief
12:49in what he is and what he still can be
12:55oh it's a good solid left hand by ramirez
13:01ramirez is fighting a smart fight right now you see espinosa he's starting to he's starting to commit
13:06over commit a little bit he's starting to get impatient with his attack he's a stubborn type of fighter
13:12you know i told him in the fight i mean i was like why don't you use your height he said i
13:15don't want to use my height i like to fight and in this division what a distinct advantage it would
13:20be be committed to it good action here in the final half minute of round three
13:27as ramirez has had his moments and espinosa willing to fire between punches
13:32those level changing faints is what's great in the offense for ramirez
13:36every now and then espinosa's getting close and he's landing he's getting a little bit closer to the target
13:41now but boy espinosa's reacting to those level changes
13:48robesi ramirez with a slight 35 to 31 connect advantage according to compu box as we start
13:55round number four however much more accurate to be landing 47 percent
13:59she's getting his head outside to get himself in position to be able to land that shot
14:03see at the same time espinosa looking for their uppercut
14:07i'm a little far far away at distance but man perfect timing right there with that shot by robesi
14:16he's going to continue to use that level to see the level change right there he's standing completely
14:20low and then he's going to pop up a surprise or attempt to surprise espinosa with the shot over
14:26the top we heard what bernardo had to say from the espinosa corner what about the other side bernardo
14:31well ismail salas says we win this fight by being smart we can't go to war he's tall yes that's an
14:38advantage but it also makes him slow and we've got openings we can take advantage of of course that is
14:43salas who has trained robesi since his second pro fight a legendary amateur trainer who now has guided
14:50many pros including this ramirez run that brought him to a world championship and i think being smart when
14:56he's at his best is why he's off to a very good start in this rematch good combination right there
15:03from espinoza catcher robesi along the road so base he's going to have to move all night he cannot
15:09stand there and exchange no never with espinoza too much firepower oh nice uppercut on the inside
15:19and now the willingness for espinoza to get to the inside as he has told us
15:23time and again even at six foot one he's very comfortable there
15:31espinoza putting a lot of pressure on robesi he's moving he's been moving since the first round
15:37you know i'm wondering if he's going to wear out he's going to have to be in the best shape of his
15:40life because if he slows down just a little bit and he allows espinoza to gain any kind of momentum
15:46it's going to be hard to stop him you get a sense of some espinoza momentum here it's around four
15:51don't you yes i do his willingness to throw punches in volume fashion when he gets and crosses that
15:57threshold and gets more to the inside but at the same time he's vulnerable too like that yes like
16:03that right there yes absolutely every now and then robesi is going to have to either step in or tie up
16:09he's going to have to use a different tactic other than just picking up his legs and moving
16:12what's your head nearly a clash of heads
16:24see that warning from chris flores see that's what's special about after noza
16:30although he does have the longer arms and he can fight on the outside he also can fight on the inside
16:35he shortens up his shots extremely well on the inside good uppercuts body shots as well
16:43nice counter right there from robesi again getting outside of that right hand
16:48and committing heavily with that left hand
16:55top-ranked boxing on espn is brought to you by freestyle libre
17:00look at this crowd here in phoenix for these world title rematches rafael espinoza his title defense
17:08against the guy he took the belt from robesi ramirez the six foot one espinoza the featherweight
17:15champion we talked to him yesterday he said i know robesi saw the confidence in me that i will defeat him
17:22again he said the first time timmy he didn't know what he was facing he didn't know who he was facing
17:27now he knows and he knows it will not be easy for him and robesi's not making it easy again picking up
17:36his feet setting traps like that using that level change to be able to create his offense and create
17:44options for him downstairs and upstairs however you're starting to see a little bit of variation with
17:49his combinations also he's starting to throw that right hook too now good body shot on the inside
17:53mark creagle how do you have it scored 39 37 three rounds to one robesi ramirez there's no blueprint for
18:04fighting with six foot one inch rugged guy but robesi has been incredibly disciplined
18:10completely agree with you mark a much different start than what we saw the last time now consider
18:15it was the fifth round in their first fight when ramirez scored a knockdown
18:26that's a dangerous punch right there that right hook
18:29well base he's moving to his left towards his left and he's throwing a right hook as he's moving
18:34nice uppercut right there from espinoza he's getting closer to his mark test i mean yeah test getting
18:41closer to his mark with that uppercut
18:51this
19:02another left hand from robesi game but again you got espinoza trying to get close robesi being real
19:23slippery on the inside right there look like he had him pinned espinoza he's having trouble getting
19:30or pinning robesi along the ropes see that constant movement from the two-time olympic gold medalist
19:38and mostly directed to his left
19:46there's a right uppercut this time tried to wrap it around with a body shot as well
19:51right there right there robesi tried a different tactic he tried to smother the offense
19:58of espinoza but espinoza said nope i got a short uppercut for you on the inside
20:14the other side of the other side of the offense
20:18Rafael espinoza throwing more punches robesi ramirez being more efficient it's a close fight as we start
20:26round number six the rematch as Rafael espinoza defends his wbo featherweight championship a night when
20:33he lost the belt a year ago as once again a pause in the action that is it
20:44you see robesi just stopped
20:46the game might have got his job i don't want to assume but it might be his jaw his jaw broken
20:52he got his jaw broken he got it wait maybe maybe it's his eye
20:57the fight is over and it's a tko victory for rafael espinoza
21:16let's go back and show you the last 10 seconds
21:20he just stopped he absorbed that punch and just stopped
21:40i'm confused
21:44bernardo get yourself in there and figure this thing out he said he's got double vision in his
21:49right eye according to referee chris floors and that's exactly why robesi ramirez stopped
21:54i'm looking at israel salas and he's saying that it was an elbow and that was something that
21:59team ramirez was concerned about coming into the fight that's exactly what i was just about to quote
22:05when he stopped the fight he was telling us yesterday that espinoza is not has no defensive
22:12prowess his only defense is using elbows and pushing that he's dirty on the inside and follows
22:18through with his elbows i was literally just about to quote that when all of a sudden he flat out
22:24stopped and quit and it's a tko victory for rafael espinoza timmy yeah until i see that elbow
22:30i'm not going to say it was an elbow i know it was a straight right hand right down the middle
22:35he definitely took a right hand right then just waved it off himself and the way it's swelling
22:41yeah right to the eye that's a straight right hand right to the eye no elbow there hey that's a tko
22:49victory that's a tko right there my man quick punch was landed bernardo i just spoke with
22:55ismael salas the punch that caused the injury was an elbow the round before and in between rounds
23:01robesi ramirez came to the corner and complained that he couldn't see ismael salas said why don't you
23:06go out there and see what you can do and when that punch landed that's all he could handle
23:11all right so they claim that there was an elbow in the fifth round they went out to test themselves
23:16in the sixth round as soon as a flush right hand landed he says double vision i can go no further tko
23:25victory espinoza well that is an odd ending to our much anticipated rematch for sure as rafael espinoza
23:43retains he wins the rematch
23:46test i got to go back to that fifth round and see if an elbow did land i don't think so
23:59i i really don't think so i know there was elbows being there were warnings for there were some
24:03warnings there were some warnings however i don't know i you know i got to go back and why i get it
24:09i see his corner over there telling me that was an elbow
24:12ladies and gentlemen here inside footprint center phoenix arizona referee chris flores calls a stop to
24:22this bout at 12 seconds of round number six for your winner by technical knockout and still wbo featherweight
24:32champion of the world rafael espinoza a winner by tko in six in a very odd ending to this championship
24:49fight listen our team in the production truck is going to scour that fifth round and try to find the
24:55elbow that that robasey ramirez's corner is sighting we know there was a flush right hand we know the
25:02former champ waved it off himself and espinoza retains bernardo roacy explain to us what happened
25:14he says look what ended up happening is in the fourth round he hit me with a couple of
25:35elbows in the follow-through i complained to the referee about it he did his job supposedly and this
25:41happened look i had to make a decision for my own health i'm not being protected look i had double
26:10vision and i had to make sure that i leave this ring with my health you see i'm okay fortunately
26:17but i just could not see out of my right eye you was bien you were doing well but when did things
26:25change change
26:39when there's one action that no one goal
26:44They're going to take Robesi Ramirez to the hospital immediately here.
27:00What he said was, look, at the end of the day, I couldn't see.
27:04Those were elbows that ended up hurting me, and I had to pull out of this fight.
27:08I'm happy with my decision.
27:10Now we're going to move on to Divino Espinosa, a big victory for you.
27:15A great triumph for you, Rafael Espinosa.
27:18The public responds.
27:19What did you think about landing that right hand and Robesi Ramirez stopping the fight?
27:28I was only doing my job.
27:31Obviously, I grabbed it, but I was just pushing.
27:36I think the pressure and the other rounds were going to be very complicated for him.
27:41I mean, he felt the grip, the hand, or maybe he thought he could not.
27:47And then it happened.
27:48I won.
27:49He's like, look, I landed a clean shot, that right hand, and he felt that power.
27:53I think he was feeling the power.
27:54He's starting to feel my pressure coming on, and I think the fight was turning in terms
27:59of the tide was coming in my favor.
28:01He was feeling my power, and I think he knew what was coming next.
28:05Para ti, ¿qué sigue ahora que defiendes con éxito esta corona?
28:08What's next for you now that you've defended this belt?
28:23I've said it before.
28:24I want to be a legend, and that's why I'm willing to face anybody.
28:28The fans want to see me, they're out here seeing me, and I'm going to be a fan favorite.
28:33Y finalmente, ¿cómo se siente?
28:37How does it feel to do this in front of the crowd?
28:40No, la verdad, soñaba esta noche.
28:43Soñaba esta noche, y quiero decirle a Phoenix que va a ser mi nueva casa.
28:49Y voy a volver a darle grandes peleas, y que viva México!
28:54I want to tell Phoenix, this is going to be my new home.
28:57I'm going to come back and give you great fights.
29:00Long live Mexico.
29:01Tes, back to you.
29:02All right.
