00:00Breaking news this morning, the Department of Work and Pensions have revealed that nearly 1.3 million migrants are claiming universal credit.
00:07The latest government stats show there's been a near 50% increase since 2022, just three years.
00:16Hang on a minute. 50% in three years increase in the number of migrants claiming universal credit.
00:25That's just astonishing. Just under 800,000 claims, that is.
00:32And non-EU nationals with indefinite leave make up around 200,000 claims, followed by just 120,000 refugees.
00:41We're just trying to get the information around this, these figures of justice, but it is deeply embarrassing,
00:48not just for this government, frankly, but for the previous one as well.
00:53I'm going to be watching Twitter. There'll be some comments, no doubt, coming out from some of the politicians.
00:58I'm expecting reform to jump on this quite quickly.
01:00And this brings me back to the story we've been leading on all day.
01:02The 12-year-old girl who went to school in a union flag dress was chastised for it, sent home.
01:08Her dad had to pick her up because she was accused of not facilitating culture.
01:11Culture day.
01:12Culture. And I said at the top of this show at half past nine, we are one of the most hospitable, welcoming, inclusive,
01:19whatever cliche word you want to use, countries going.
01:21And this just proves it.
01:231.2 million migrants claiming universal credit, including refugees, those with indefinite leave to remain.
01:31We are the most welcoming country going.
01:34We are generous. We are kind.
01:36And yet, in the case of that poor 12-year-old girl, we're treated like we're doing something wrong.
