EU calls Trump's 30% tariff 'absolutely unacceptable,' but will work towards deal

European Union member states find US President Donald Trump's 30% tariff threat "absolutely unacceptable," Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said on Monday, July 14, during a joint press conference with EU's Trade Chief Maros Sefcovic in Brussels.

Sefcovic said the EU would need to go for countermeasures if the trade negotiations with the US fail, after a meeting with EU ministers in Brussels.

He added he believes there is "still a potential to continue the negotiations" and that any deal has to be accepted by EU members and the European Parliament.

He also said he plans to confer with his US counterparts later on Monday to discuss the state of play.

00:00Today, we discussed the state of play and prospects for EU-US trade relations, including
00:17possible EU countermeasures, in light of the ongoing negotiations for an agreement in principle,
00:24as well as President Trump's announcement over the weekend of 30% general tariffs on the EU
00:30from the 1st of August, which, I must say, member states find absolutely unacceptable and unjustified.
00:38The EU, as you know very well, never walks away without genuine effort, especially considering
00:46the hard work invested, how close we find ourselves to making a deal, and the clear
00:52benefits of the negotiated solution.
00:55But as I have said before, it takes two hands to clap.
00:59It was also very clear today, and I have to say that, comparing to the previous discussions
01:05we had with the ministers, now it came very clear across the table, so this is a situation
01:10we have to protect the jobs, we have to protect the businesses, we have to protect EU economy,
01:14and we need to go for these rebalancing measures.
01:17That message was strongest I've witnessed since we started the discussion with the US.
