00:00German backpacker Carolina Wilger described her rescuer as a guardian angel when she was found by chance after 11 days in the Western Australian outback.
00:09I stopped and, yeah, I just, yeah, went out and gave her a hug and said, look, everybody's been looking for you. She couldn't believe it. She didn't realise how long. She said, you know, you're my guardian angel. I go, well, I don't know. I don't know about that, but, you know, she is. She's just one very lucky person.
00:25The 26-year-old flagged down a passing car on July 11, 2025. Before then, she had last been seen on June 29, visiting a shop in Beacon, 300 kilometres north-east of Perth.
00:39Her Mitsubishi van had been found on July 10, bogged and abandoned 150 kilometres from Beacon. She was then found a day later, dehydrated, starving, exhausted and ravaged by mosquitoes, having walked 24 kilometres away from her car.
00:55In a statement, Wilger explained why she had left the relative safety of her car after she crashed it.
01:01Some people might wonder why I even left my car, even though I had water, food and clothing there, she said.
01:07The answer is, I lost control of the car and rolled down a slope. In the crash, I hit my head significantly.
01:14As a result of the accident, I left my car in a state of confusion and got lost.
01:18We know that Caroline is a very brave woman who's had a remarkable escape from a very difficult situation stuck out in bushland for a number of days.
