Extremes of heat and rainfall are becoming the new normal in the UK, says the Met Office. Its State of the Climate report 2024 highlights how the UK is now about 1.24C warmer than from 1961 to 1990. The report also confirms for the first time that sea level rise in the UK is higher than the global average, increasing risks of coastal flooding and erosion. Report by Jonesia. 00:00Oh, that's awesome!
00:30We are seeing extremes of temperature and record breaking temperatures on quite a frequent basis
00:57now. This is actually becoming normal as our climate is continuing to change. It's a fairly normal
01:06thing that we're seeing extremes and records on a regular basis. In particular, we're seeing
01:12the frequency and intensity of spells of hot weather in the UK really quite dramatically
01:18increasing. Of course, it's these extremes that have the greatest impact. If we think
01:24about impact on our infrastructure, on public health for people who are perhaps vulnerable
01:29to hot weather, impacts on the environment and so on.
01:43That is why we are driving forward with making Britain a clean energy superpower to tackle the
01:47climate crisis. Because unless we tackle it, the problem will only get worse. And that's
01:52why we're committed to doing so. But we also know we've got to adapt and we've got to become
01:56more resilient. That's why, for example, we're investing the largest amount ever over the
02:01next decade in our flood defences. There is cause for alarm, but there is also reason for
02:06hope because we can act to tackle this crisis and we can do so in a way that is good for people
02:12today and good for future generations.
02:16For elderly people particularly, but for all of us, we're feeling the pressure and heat. If there
02:38are changes to the regulations that are required to enable families that want to put air conditioning
02:42in, to be able to do that, that's a sensible policy change.
02:47These are the consequences of climate change. And the Warm Homes Plan, which is often about
02:59retrofitting the roof or your walls or making sure you've got the appropriate windows, you
03:05know these can be designed in a way that is appropriate for both heating and cooling. And
03:09we want to make sure that fund is being used to target people who can't afford to do that
03:14to their own homes or in council houses and therefore it's our responsibility to do it.
