SC hears plea urging Centre to pursue blood money deal to save Nimisha Priya from execution in Yemen

New Delhi: July 14, 2025, (ANI):  The Supreme Court heard a plea seeking Indian government intervention to save Nimisha Priya through diplomatic talks. Her counsel informed the Court that a blood money settlement is the only option, if the victim's family agrees. The Attorney General said India is making every effort to help, though intervention remains limited due to Yemen’s complex situation. Justice Sandeep Mehta expressed concern and scheduled the matter for further hearing on July 18.

00:40before the Honorable Supreme Court and apprised the court regarding the steps taken by the union government

00:47So the Leonard Attorney has informed the court regarding the difficulties,

00:52the challenges facing by the union government

00:54because there is no diplomatic presence in this part of Yemen

00:58where Nimisha is sentenced to death.

01:00Indian missions are not working there.

01:04So there are challenges.

01:05But fortunately or positively, he informed the court that the Indian government has officially

01:09requested the government of Yemen or the authorities there

01:14to postpone the date, to extend the date of execution.

01:18And he is hopeful, the government is hopeful.

01:21The Yemeni counterparts will consider that positively

01:24and they will postpone the date of execution.

01:28So this is a positive news.

01:29And if we get more time, so we can have negotiations through our own channel

01:36and with the support of Indian government also.

01:39So the Leonard Attorney also informed the court that there are many discussions taking place

01:45through the diplomatic and non-diplomatic channels,

01:48which he doesn't want to disclose here

01:51because those are diplomatic negotiations or diplomatic communications.

01:54So the court also said they don't want to look into those issues,

01:59but they are looking for a positive action from the government.

02:02And we all are hopeful, the petitioners and the government of India is hopeful,

02:09are hopeful like we will get some more time for the blood money negotiation.

02:13And categorically, we informed the court that and the union of India also,

02:17we are not looking for any financial assistance from the government.
