Cachimba, like many of the dogs living in Chichen Itza, is one of the furry guardians of the majestic Mayan city in southeastern Mexico. Some of the dogs arrived badly injured, sick or malnourished at the site of the Kukulkan pyramid. Most were left to fend for themselves during the Covid pandemic, says Maria Guadalupe Espinosa, director of the archaeological site where they now receive food, vaccinations and "a lot of love."
