00:00Whether at the chessboard or elsewhere.

00:04And of course, when you know who you are, when you understand what kind of game you want to play,

00:08you should also look at the opponent.

00:11Because your opponent, that's more difficult to actually understand,

00:14because you have to look at the games your opponent played, certain decisions he or she made before.

00:21But if you can get the best of this knowledge, recognizing the strengths and the weakness of your opponent,

00:27then you can start thinking about designing the game that will be beneficial for you

00:32and will be most annoying for your opponent.

00:36I followed this wisdom when I played Anatoly Karpov, and I did well.

00:42I succeeded in almost regular changing the game to the character of the position that fit me better than Anatoly Karpov.

00:55Now, I failed to follow the same logic when I played Vladimir Kravnik.

01:03I don't think that in the year 2000, when I lost my title match against him in London,

01:08I was an inferior player.

01:10But in the match, I tried to play his game.

01:13And I failed to take myself away from the psychological trap.

01:20Playing positions where Kravnik was much more comfortable.

01:26I think it's not that I couldn't play them.

01:29Actually, I won one game later on in this endgame against Kravnik a year later.

01:34But during the match, when you deal with psychology, one player against another one,

01:40you have to be comfortable and you have to make your opponent uncomfortable.

01:43And while you never know exactly what your opponent is comfortable or not,

01:49because in many cases when you are talking about sort of amateur chess or a club level chess,

01:57your knowledge of your opponent is highly limited.

01:59But you know exactly what you're talking about.
