Salem Witch Trials, Havana Syndrome, Medieval Dancing Plagues, nuns acting like cats... MASS HYSTERIA!!! Author, Screenwriter and former head of Cracked Video, Robert Brockway (1-900-HOTDOG), joins Michael Swaim on to take this episode of The Simpsons Taught Me Everything Podcast into a slightly different direction with a heavy focus on mass hysteria. It's not just depicted in The Marge vs. The Monorail episode but in quite a few episodes. Michael and Robert break down not just the science behind the root causes of mass hysteria with the help of a whole bunch of Simpsons references to make the case.

00:00so i think the crux of the music man that probably inspired conan to pitch the simpsons ep
00:05was of course the central idea of a con artist using song and the excitement of hey we're all
00:12gonna sing about it to sell a town full of idiots something they absolutely don't need
00:17on just pure groupthink interestingly in that episode the monorail is shitty and broken and
00:24any cut corners much like when robert terwilliger builds the hydroelectric dam oh wait that was his
00:30brother but we blame him so they're interchangeable um meanwhile in the music man the marching band
00:37doesn't even exist and they have to fill that gap with movie magic musical magic whatever you call
00:43it the cracked writer in me insists on calling it an outbreak of mass hysteria as i mentioned in this
00:51case they resolve the situation by getting the whole town to head out into the streets and agree
00:57that the kids are doing a great marching band job and clap and scream while they stumble down main
01:01street and borrowed rags blowing through rusty tin cans and getting all nice and tetanus-y just in time
01:07to die in world war one
