00:00Hi, my name is Justice Tate, and what drives my academic interest, especially in the field of nursing, is a deep passion for helping others during some of the most vulnerable moments of their life.
00:14My curiosity has always been rooted in understanding how the human body works, how healing, and most importantly, how compassion and care can make a difference in someone's recovery.
00:25What gives a unique perspective is not just my academic background, but my life experience.
00:32Growing up, I often saw people in my community struggle to access quality health care, especially black women during childbirth.
00:39That motivated me to become a postpartum labor and delivery nurse so I could advocate for better care, support new mothers emotionally and physically, and be a voice for those who often go unheard in medical spaces.
00:55I also came from a performing arts background.
00:58I'm a dancer, not only at First Class Dance Studio, but at Duke Ellington School of the Arts, which has taught me discipline, empathy, and how to express myself even when words fall short.
01:10That same energy drives me how I show up in the classroom, in rehearsals, and one day in hospital rooms.
01:17It helped me understand that healing isn't just physically, it's emotional too, and the mindset is something I will carry with me in my career.
01:26As a future scholar, I'm committed to continuing my education beyond just earning a degree.
01:32I want to explore the ways a systematic bias impacts health care outcomes and help lead research or programs that bring awareness and solutions to those issues.
01:46Whether it's participating in public health assistance or mentoring future nurses of color, I want my leadership to reflect and change the purpose.
01:55I envision a future where I'm not only delivering care and transforming the experience of care itself, especially for young mothers who deserve to be often heard and seen and respected.
02:08Nursing is more than just a profession to me, it's my purpose, and I'm ready to keep learning and keep going.
