00:00I got to witness the most exciting two minutes in sports at the 151st Kentucky Derby this weekend,
00:04and when a race has 151 runnings, there are going to be a few traditions that come up over the years.
00:09First things first, the hats. When the race started years ago, full morning dress was the
00:14required dress code, which meant hats for women. When the race became televised, the hats and
00:18fascinators got bigger as people started showing off their fashions. Obviously, I had a really good
00:23time with this. Second, the cash-only betting. There are actually 12 races the day of the Derby,
00:28and patrons can place their bets up until the final race as the odds for each horse change
00:32constantly. The Derby's official drink became the mint julep in 1939, but did you know a silver
00:37julep cup was actually given as the jockey's trophy starting in the 1820s? I had plenty of juleps on
00:42the track, but also enjoyed other famous cocktails like the oak's lily and the spire. This running
00:47for the roses was only the 10th out of 151 races labeled as a sloppy derby because of the very
00:53muddy track. The bugler trumpeted the call to the post, their riders up was called, and the
00:58horses were off. Though we got wet, nothing could have stopped us from having a great day. Here's
01:02to a fun 151st running of the Derby.
