00:00Leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan meet in Abu Dhabi to discuss the next steps in finalizing their peace agreement.
00:10Russia pounced Ukraine's capital, Kiev, with another major missile and drone attack overnight into Thursday, killing at least two people.
00:20U.S. President Donald Trump said that he would impose 50% tariffs on Brazilian imports,
00:25citing a witch hunt trial against former Brazilian President Yair Bolsonaro.
00:30Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilyam Aliyev are meeting this Thursday in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates,
00:40to discuss next steps in finalizing the peace agreement their offices have confirmed.
00:45This is the first formal bilateral meeting of the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan
00:51since they agreed on the draft text of a peace deal following almost four decades of conflict.
01:00This is particularly important because it's a bilateral summit.
01:06With Russia overwhelmed by its failed invasion of Ukraine, this is very much at the exclusion of Russia.
01:15In September 2023, Azerbaijan reclaimed full control of the Karabakh region after a lightning military campaign
01:24following decades-long conflict with Armenia in which Russia was a central actor.
01:30Azerbaijan's launch of a war in 2020 and its military seizure of Nagorno-Karabakh has exposed the emptiness of a security reliance on Russia.
01:45But I would also say Armenia and Azerbaijan ironically share a same pursuit,
01:53a policy to defy Moscow, pushing back and pushing out Russia from the South Caucasus.
02:01A significant lesson learned from the Ukrainian battlefield is the surprising weakness and incompetence of the Russian armed forces.
02:11That's an important lesson for all of the countries in the near abroad, Russia's neighbors.
02:18Analysts believe Moscow losing its influence in the region will leave a dangerous vacuum of power which Turkey is seeking to regain.
02:30At least two people were killed on Thursday and 16 others injured after Russia attacked Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital,
02:39with another mass missile and drone attack.
02:42According to Ukrainian officials, the overnight attack reportedly caused fires across the city
02:48and came a day after the heaviest aerial attack of the three-year war so far.
02:54Rescue workers worked on Thursday at a residential district in Kyiv after falling debris caused the fire
03:01on the top floor of an apartment building, according to Ukrainian officials.
03:06Russia had fired more than 700 attack and decoy drones at Ukraine,
03:11topping previous nightly barrages for the third time in two weeks.
03:16Many residents in the Ukrainian capital sought refuge in underground metro stations.
03:22The attack comes as the Trump administration resumed sending some weapons to Ukraine.
03:28The Pentagon had previously directed that weapons shipments be paused.
03:32Russia's military has not commented on the reported latest attack.
03:41U.S. President Donald Trump said that he would impose 50 percent tariffs on Brazilian imports,
03:49citing a witch hunt trial against former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.
03:54Bolsonaro is accused of trying to overturn his 2022 election defeat.
03:59He faces charges including involvement in an armed criminal organization
04:04and attempting to undermine Brazil's democratic order.
04:08In a letter addressed to current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva,
04:12Trump said the trial shouldn't be happening and called for it to end immediately.
04:17Lula responded that the 50 percent tariffs would trigger Brazil's economic reciprocity law,
04:23potentially suspending trade, investment and intellectual property agreements with the U.S.
04:29Lula also noted that the U.S. has maintained a trade surplus of more than $410 billion with Brazil
04:37over the past 15 years.
04:39Bolsonaro has not commented on Trump's announcement,
04:43but he has previously said he is the victim of political persecution.
04:47The recent surge in illegal migration to the island of Crete
04:58has led the Greek government to take stricter measures to tackle the problem.
05:03On Wednesday, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced
05:07after a meeting with Minister of Migration Policy Thanos Plevres
05:11a series of emergency measures to deal with the crisis.
05:14The Greek government will temporarily suspend the processing of asylum applications
05:20for migrants arriving from Africa, initially for three months.
05:24The second decision is to establish one or possibly two permanent closed detention centers
05:41for migrants on the island of Crete.
05:44Mitsotakis also said the government's discussions with Libya are ongoing.
05:51He also warned that the Greek armed forces are willing to cooperate with Libyan authorities
05:56in order to prevent boats from leaving from Libya.
05:58The Greek government will send out a statement that the government is
06:04that the international government is in Greece to the end of the island
06:08and it will strike for all of them to win these refugees
06:09and of course to all of them to win them.
06:12and to all their financial customers, that the money that they demand
06:25must be completely lost, because it will be much easier
06:31than what it was until today, to be able to come to Greece because of the sea.
06:37The Greek Premier's remarks were made after more than 2,000 migrants landed on Crete since the weekend.
06:44The Mediterranean country has seen a spike in illegal migration recently,
06:50with more than 60,000 believed to have arrived last year, a 25% increase from 2023 figures.
07:00French authorities raided the headquarters of the far-right National Rally Party on Wednesday
07:04as part of a probe into alleged violations of campaign finance laws.
07:09The Paris prosecutor's office said the investigation is examining whether the party used illegal loans
07:14to finance its campaigns between 2020 and 2024.
07:18The investigation concerns possible acts of money laundering and the use of forged documents
07:23during their 2022 presidential and 2024 European election races.
07:28The National Rally's President Jordan Bardella called the action a new harassment campaign.
07:33He said armed forces stormed the party building on Wednesday morning
07:37and seized emails, documents and accounting data.
07:40The party has surged in popularity in recent years, becoming France's largest single parliamentary party.
07:47The raid comes about three months after the party's co-founder and de facto leader,
07:51Marine Le Pen and other officials were convicted of embezzling EU funds.
07:55German Chancellor Friedrich Merz received NATO Secretary General Mark Rutter in Berlin on Wednesday
08:05as Germany celebrates its 70th anniversary of joining the alliance.
08:11Both Merz and Rutter underlined their commitment to Ukraine
08:14and said that the priority is to bring about a ceasefire with Russia as soon as possible.
08:19The NATO Secretary General said that Europe is not producing enough military supplies
08:23and welcomed the increase in defence spending the Allies agreed to a couple of weeks ago in The Hague.
08:30Germany is expected to take a leading role within the alliance.
08:34As tensions between France and Germany mount over fighter jets,
08:38Merz said discussions are ongoing but highlighted that the project could be a good collaboration
08:43between France, Spain and Germany if they can reach an agreement.
08:46Rutter also spoke about China's ambitions and said World War 3 could occur within the next three to seven years
08:53with Russia being able to launch a full-scale attack against NATO territory to keep Europe busy
08:59whilst China attacks Taiwan.
09:02As global conflicts continue to heat up, NATO has been making big promises in terms of military and defence expansion.
09:09But can it deliver?
09:11Liv Stroud, in Berlin, for Euronews.
09:14The European Parliament approved one of the toughest documents in the history of its enlargement.
09:28It's the Progress Report on Georgia's accession process to the bloc.
09:33With 490 votes in favour and 147 against, MEPs condemned what they call the backsliding of the rule of law
09:42and the growing Russian influence on the ruling party Georgian Dream.
09:46Euronews spoke to one of the main drafters of the report.
09:50We see rigged elections last year in the parliamentary elections
09:54and since then we've seen ever more brutal clampdowns and crackdowns on peaceful protesters.
10:00So what this report clearly shows is that the Georgian Dream government
10:05seems to be playing out the Russian playbook of disinformation, manipulation and intimidation
10:11and that is really not going towards the membership of the European Union.
10:16The Parliament has repeatedly denounced what they call electoral fraud in last October's legislative elections
10:21against the opposition party, composed of pro-European forces.
10:26The EU and Council of Europe have repeatedly condemned the arrest of dozens,
10:31including members of the Georgian opposition, journalists and activists in recent months.
10:37A return to the EU past could only be considered if the Georgian authorities take credible steps to reverse democratic backsliding,
10:47meaning stopping the violence against citizens, releasing all those unjustly detained,
10:53suspending repressive laws and engaging in a meaningful dialogue with civil society.
11:00Nevertheless, the Georgian government claims its full commitment to the EU accession process,
11:05which was reiterated to Euronews last May.
11:09You know, there are many speculations about our accession path, but there is no real shift in our policy.
11:15We have the only policy which is the EU integration agenda that's formally adopted by the government.
11:23Growing concerns and disagreements between the EU and the Georgian government prompted the two sides to freeze the enlargement process,
11:31only a few months after Georgia received candidate status for EU membership.
11:36The EU membership is the EU membership.
11:43The EU membership includes the EU membership.
11:53And this is the EU membership.
11:55The EU membership is known as EU membership on dialogue.
