00:01Avignon is overflowing with performances of all kinds from classical theatre to contemporary

00:07dance, stand-up and plenty of spontaneous happenings in the street too as the city hosts

00:12the 79th edition of its world-renowned theatre festival.

00:16Director Thiago Rodriguez took over three years ago and he's been trying to make this

00:20into a more international event, opening up to the world by inviting a guest language.

00:25After English and Spanish, Arabic is now in the spotlight which means we've got work from

00:31Palestinian, Tunisian, Moroccan and Iraqi creators and their pieces of drama.

00:36Ali Shahru, the Lebanese director, kicked off proceedings with his latest play When I Saw the Sea.

00:43It involves three women using dance, music and storytelling to give us an insight into the conditions of

00:49migrant workers in Lebanon.

00:51Avignon's official selection The Inn and the enormous fringe selection The Off both run
