00:00In the 1989 Test Series between West Indies and India, a young Ian Bishop announced his
00:05arrival on the international stage with a brilliant balling performance.
00:09Let's enjoy the outstanding balling spell of Ian Bishop during the four-test match between
00:14West Indies and India at Kingston.
00:17Played from April 28 to May 3, 1989, Ian Bishop showed his class with a match-winning performance
00:23taking a total of six wickets for 116 runs.
00:27In the first innings, he bowled a long and disciplined spell, picking up two wickets for 55 runs
00:32in 26 overs, including eight mid-ins over.
00:35Then in the second innings, he stepped up even more, taking four crucial wickets for just
00:3961 runs in 17 overs with three mid-ins.
00:43His brilliant effort helped the West Indies dominate India and secured a comfortable victory
00:47by seven wickets.
00:49It was a memorable performance that showed Ian Bishop's talent and the impact he could
00:53make with the ball.
00:55And in comes Ravi Shastri.
01:00Century in the Barbados Test match.
01:0464 for one.
01:06Very respectable score.
01:08You see the speed of his goal is.
01:10This is Ian Bishop and some of the surprising bounce in the pitch to Shastri.
01:16It's wide and he scored by Richards.
01:18Well, you can't play the pitch or the bounce.
01:21You have to play in Shastri.
01:22It was wide, perhaps swinging away.
01:25Interesting to see Jeff Dujan's performance there.
01:29He made his dunce.
01:30I should just bring it up.
01:31You go.
01:32The lead and also Shastri's feet.
01:33Well, then he's probably batting in rubber soles.
01:35Have a look at Dujan now.
01:37Because Shastri's right foot slips.
01:39That's why he was nowhere near the pitch to the ball.
01:41Dujan goes through it.
01:42That really does obscure Viv Richards.
01:44And Richards did exceptionally well not to be distracted by Dujan's body.
01:48That was a fine catch.
01:49It looked fairly easy at the end, but it wasn't.
01:51So Shastri goes for five.
01:52Then if you can lead from the front.
01:53Bishop.
01:54Oh dear.
01:55Bowling beautifully actually, Bishop.
01:56When you get into bat, it's always very difficult to tell where your off stump is.
01:58This is the fastest bow on the West Indian side.
02:00The Indian players reckon that.
02:01It's difficult to see that on television, but this man Bishop is something special.
02:06Oh.
02:07Better still.
02:08See Dujan moving away as the ball pitch moved away off the seam and that is virtually on
02:27the ball.
02:28Fast leg break.
02:31So what has Bishop got to do?
02:34Well, when Sanka got in, the classic sideways-on position for this, but nobody on earth, not even Don Bradman, would have been an edge to that one.
02:42That was a magnificent one.
02:47Oh, cool.
02:49Lovely setting with the hills in the background here at Kingston, Jamaica, Tony.
02:56Not so lovely facing with France Bowling, I don't think.
02:59That was a flinch more than a shot, and it beat Dujon.
03:07There was no danger of him being out of this, a real genuine dancer.
03:11That swung a lot after it passed the batsman, that's what beat Dujon.
03:24It's like a circus act out there.
03:26Normally the keeper operates at about waist level.
03:32And Jeff Dujon's going to cover a lot of personal space.
03:39It needed to be a nine-foot-tall wicker keeper to lay a glove on this one.
03:42Just look at that bounce.
03:45Could have been a foot to the left, it would have taken that to go.
03:48Oh!
03:49Snip!
03:50It's caught!
03:51Lenny Sarka's gone.
03:52Well, one of these quite before India.
03:53Jubilation of the West Indies.
03:54Lenny Sarka's talking on the addition to 12.
03:56I'm relieved to get that, I think, the way it still feels.
03:5897-3.
03:59A pretty good performance by India.
04:00Bright sunshine.
04:01Roasting hot.
04:02The umbrellas are up.
04:03And this is Ian Bishop.
04:05Oh dear, dear.
04:06Well, that leapt off the turf.
04:07I'm sorry.
04:08I'm sorry.
04:09I'm sorry.
04:10I'm sorry.
04:11I had a few years ago.
04:12Not to go on the addition to 12.
04:13I'm sorry.
04:14I'm sorry.
04:15I'm sorry.
04:16I'm sorry.
04:17I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
04:18So, I'm sorry.
04:19It's okay.
04:20It's okay.
04:22The umbrellas are up.
04:27And this is Ian Bishop.
04:30Oh, dear, dear.
04:33Well, that leapt off the turf.
04:35And so unpredictable.
04:38It's what we mean by uneven bounce.
04:40Dujon had no chance.
04:49That was a nasty one, too.
04:50Up on the thumb, trapped the glove on the bat handle.
04:54Can be very painful.
04:57Lots of lift from a very tall man.
04:59Bishop's around 6'6".
05:00More is about 5'6".
05:02Two slips of deep gully for Bishop.
05:07Oh, dear, dear.
05:09Well, what chance do you have that the ball leaps up like that?
05:13And Campbell Davis said,
05:14Well, this was quite a pleasant morning until just now.
05:17Right back and across in textbook fashion.
05:20And he's lucky that that didn't just lob to one of them.
05:24Bishop again.
05:26To Shastri.
05:28Slow.
05:29Slow.
05:29As straight as it is.
05:31And Shastri goes.
05:32Well, this really is a drama here.
05:35Two men out for north.
05:37Shastri fails to score.
05:41And the West Indians can clearly send victory.
05:44I don't know how you play something like that on a pitch of unpredictable bounce for big, tall, fast bowlers anyway.
05:53Shastri got in the right position.
05:54The ball was very short.
05:56He was looking for it to lift about shoulder high.
05:59Instead of hitting just below the knee.
06:00There's no answer to that, I'm afraid.
06:03Except return to the pavilion.
06:06Which he does, of course.
06:07Remy Shastri's gone.
06:08Just one run on the ball.
06:09Two wickets down.
06:12Well, your team is winning.
06:13There's nothing like it.
06:15And West Indies love to do it with fast bowling.
06:17Oh, that's a nasty ball.
06:21And, oh, had Arthurton been in closer.
06:25Well, that's extraordinary because last innings, Indy's first innings, Richards had a man in there.
06:31Short gully.
06:34But this time, just lobs into space.
06:45I would have absolutely swallowed it.
06:47And still Arun-Lal battles on.
07:00Oh, but not for long.
07:01Arun-Lal has gone.
07:03And that's Greenwich at second slip.
07:11Couple of good slip catches there.
07:13Ian Bishop to Bowler.
07:14Got to Greenwich about to fasten onto this.
07:17And he made it look very easy.
07:19Although, when the batsman doesn't flash hard at the ball, it makes it much easier for the close catchers.
07:24There's nothing to deceive them.
07:25The bat just hangs out.
07:27And Greenwich actually taking a step to his right.
07:29He had enough time.
07:30It didn't go very fast.
07:32Difficult with the balls under your throat as a batsman.
07:37But the fourth picket goes 75 facing Ian Bishop.
07:40Inside edge onto the stumps right up to the lunchtime.
07:52And there's some jubilant scene for West Indies.
07:56But a tragic reality for India.
08:00What got Van Sarka out here was the lowness of the bounce as opposed to the steepness.
08:04He was late on the shot.
08:06But all he could do was get a thick inside edge on him.
08:09Looking for something to bounce about waist high at least.
08:11Six wickets are done.
08:14Seven wickets for 113.
08:23And Capital has gone.
08:25Vibber James has caught it.
08:28He's been in great catching form.
08:30Capital looking for his shots yet again.
08:32But that one climbing again.
08:34This uneven bounce we keep on talking about.
08:36Catching about.
08:37It's not easy to decide where to stand as a slip fielder or a wicker keeper.
08:43Pitches with variable bounce like this.
08:46Vibber Richards has got it just about right.
08:47Catching it knee high.
08:49Those are the sort of catches that you enjoy at first slip.
08:52Nice and gentle.
08:55The eighth wicket down then.
08:57He'll be here for many years to come.
09:02I'm not sure if Chet and Sharma will be here for very long though.
09:06Battered and bruised.
09:08A really painful blow on the leg there.
09:18Ouch.
09:20From the Indian batsman.
09:21152 all out.
09:27Good catching there by Greenwich at slip.
09:29And the bowling 4 to Ian Bishop.
09:334 for 61.
09:34And Courtney Walsh yet again.
09:36Adding to his 6 in the first innings.
09:37With 4 for 39.
09:39Second time around.
09:40Although Ian Bishop did not play every match of the series.
09:44His performance in the Kingston Test stood out as a career defining moment early in his journey.
09:50His pace and bounce troubled the Indian batsman.
09:53And this match confirmed his status as a rising fast bowling star for the Western days.
09:58Although he did not feature in every match of the series.
10:01Ian Bishop's performance in this match not only helped secure a convincing win for the team.
10:06But also marked a significant moment in his career.
10:09As he began to establish himself as one of the promising fast bowlers of that era.
10:14His raw talent combined with control and aggression left a lasting impression and gave a glimpse
10:20of the impact he would go on to have invested in his cricket.
