00:00In the fourth test match between West Indies and India, held at Sbaina Park Kingston from
00:05April 28 to May 3, 1989, Courtney Walsh produced a searing display of fastballing that dismantled
00:13the Indian batting lineup and propelled the West Indies to a commanding seven-wicket victory.
00:18Operating with relentless rhythm and hostility, Courtney Walsh claimed match figure of 10
00:23for 101, leaving the Indian batsman with no answer.
00:27In the first inning, he was virtually unplayable.
00:30Returning figures of 6 for 62 of 29 overs, including eight mid-ins.
00:35He extracted movements of the seam and used the bounce of the Kingston pitch to devastating
00:40effect.
00:41Returning in the second innings, Courtney Walsh continued to torment the visitors, begging
00:46another four wickets for just 39 runs in 17 overs, with seven mid-ins to his name.
00:52His constant lines and sustained pressure rattled the Indian top order and ensured the West
00:57Indies were chasing a modest target in the final innings.
01:01His 10-wicket match haul earned him the Man of the Match award and underlined his status
01:06as one of the most feared fastballers of that era.
01:09India were comprehensively outplayed as the West Indies sealed the tough match by seven wickets,
01:15with Courtney Walsh's brilliant standing thal as the defining features of the contest.
01:20Courtney Walsh was on the way.
01:22Oh, it could go anywhere, it could be caught by Richards it is, and that was a poor shot really
01:31by Azaruddin committed to the hook shot, and the ball followed him, and ended up under
01:38his chin, flailed away, and it was Richards a call for the catch.
01:43You're absolutely right Tony, I mean he got into a reasonable position at the start, but
01:50the movement of the ball, look at it follow him, just left him in no man's line, he'd been
01:54better off leaving that, he would have just passed underneath his chin.
01:59He could have got away with that, he was a bit unlucky Azaruddin, because that sort of
02:02shot off and flies over the wicketkeeper for four, and Dujon with his hands in the air,
02:07I just thought he'd been better off putting them down to allow Richards a clear sight of
02:11a ball.
02:12So, Azaruddin goes for 25, he's scrambling back, Courtney Walsh polishing this ball, to Mandraker,
02:23oh, strikes him on the pad, no they say, must have done too much off the seam.
02:30Mandraker has been LBW more than once in the series, gets very turned round, square on
02:36style, back with defensive play.
02:39Good decision missed by the umpiring, by the umpire rather, there has been some doubt
02:44about some of the decisions made, but that was certainly missing the leg stomp.
02:48Well, I think this is a good score, 150 for four, India put into bat, pitch helpful to
02:55these fast bowlers.
02:57There was an appeal, not out says the umpire.
03:03Good decision, that again, that's the sort of one which often deceives an umpire, could
03:14easily have hit the edge of the bat, but he was absolutely sure that it hadn't, and despite
03:18not a very equal contest, but India doing very well, 252 for four.
03:23Well it's out, it's caught, well turning up the middle of the bat, the face of the bat,
03:36but remarkable anticipation there by Gus Logie, and Drake, there it is, caught Logie,
03:41Bull Walsh, and he goes for 47.
03:44And they're right to congratulate Logie, because that was a magnificent catch.
03:49Just watch the fielder, never mind the batsman, he's standing dead still, until the ball's
03:53on its way, and he got one hand to it, before wrapping the other around him.
03:57That went very quick, about a fifth of a second between the time the batsman hit it,
04:01for West Indian fast bowling attack.
04:03And Courtney Walsh really looks fired up this morning.
04:06Sidhu next, he's caught him, second attempt, well well Richards, what a fine catch.
04:16Very low down the first one, he must have flipped it up.
04:19And Sidhu, and that's for India, goals for his overnight, not outscored,
04:24there's 116, caught Richards for Walsh and Sidhu's gone.
04:29Well, pretty tentative shock with Sidhu, he's obviously had an overnight sleep,
04:34he gets not much sleep to think about what he's going to do today.
04:38A long way from his body, that's what only did him.
04:42And a good catch, which is it just slips.
04:46Full house today, Tony.
04:48Great to see it, great atmosphere.
04:53Walsh, oh, and that was a...
04:55Oh, his up-leg stump's gone.
04:57Well, that ball crashed into Kieran Norrie's elbow, I think,
05:01and maybe the glove.
05:03And suddenly, the leg stump disappeared.
05:07Caught everybody by surprise, that.
05:09Even the West Indian fielders didn't react for a moment or two.
05:12But he's trying to leave that,
05:14and he just deflected it off that arm guard onto the leg stump.
05:18That's the end of a brave performer.
05:20Moray-Bowl by Walsh for eight.
05:23Well, well, well, seven minutes go down now, then, for 256.
05:27And a little bit of a procession here,
05:31for India, Arshad Ayoub.
05:35Just failing to build on a very impressive first day's batting.
05:39But it's Courtney Walsh, who's the local man,
05:42who's been inspired this morning.
05:46Here he comes.
05:53Down leg side.
06:01Very fast-building.
06:02Great test for batsmanship.
06:08Strange ball to bowl first ball to a new batsman,
06:10right down the leg side.
06:11You want to get him to play, really.
06:14But Arshad Ayoub is no mean performer back home at India.
06:17He bats number five for his state.
06:20He's coming in here.
06:28Ouch.
06:29Well, you see that one ball gets up,
06:31and the next one, I'm afraid, is kept a bit low.
06:37I think he might take a Gene Tunney count here.
06:40He could be down on the canvas for more than ten seconds after that.
06:45It's always very funny if it doesn't happen to you.
06:49Oh, you could feel that from 75 yards away.
06:52He's back on his feet.
06:53Groggy.
07:00Hooks again.
07:01Finer this time.
07:02And it's caught.
07:03It's caught by Ambrose.
07:04Oh, Ambrose.
07:05Well, the track has been set.
07:06Edwin saw it.
07:07And he and Capeldale.
07:09That team just has to go for it.
07:13A top edge took the ball very finely, finally.
07:15And Capeldale has been caught by Ambrose.
07:17Oh, gosh.
07:19For 23.
07:20We've got to admire Capel's courage.
07:23Hit a terribly painful blow of the ball before.
07:26He accepts a challenge for the next bouncer, and away it goes.
07:30Had he been a little luckier, he'd probably bisected the fielders
07:34as he had a few balls earlier.
07:36And that ball flying not very high in the air.
07:39Just passing the empire now.
07:41And it was going straight en route for the tall figure of Kirtley Ambrose.
07:46He's got a very, very safe pair of hands.
07:49And I'm afraid for Capel, that was the end.
07:51Absolutely.
07:52Bye, U.
07:53Oh, he's out.
07:54He's caught by that special man who'd be put in there in short gully.
08:06Keith Artheton, World Cap, you see by Regence.
08:08Pulling the man in short gully, and Artheton, left-handed, takes the ball to his left side.
08:15Well, I don't know how you play that.
08:20you play that. I suppose you duck under it is your only hope. He did everything he possibly could,
08:26got a bat handled to it, not the blade of the bat. 285 for mine.
08:42Well, that's been City's floor, I think, right throughout this series.
08:50Oh, Sidhu, Sidhu, he's pretty moving behind the ball after it's gone through, talking to himself.
09:02Nathan Mitchell sees the humour.
09:06That's absolutely right, Tony, he's nowhere near in line with that ball. Look how far away his head is over the pitch.
09:12He moves afterwards, and nearly got run out. Still waiting for the first run, Courtney Walsh has the ball.
09:19And West Indy's lead, over 95. Interball to Sidhu.
09:24He nicked it, caught it. Wonderful catch by Gordon Greenwich.
09:30Caught a third slip, and yet again Sidhu hanging out the bat.
09:35Well, what a game, Cricketeers. Everybody on their feet cheering that first dismissal.
09:47Sidhu, the hero of the first innings for 116. Fails to trouble the scorers in the second,
09:52thanks to a very fast reaction catch from Gordon Greenwich at third slip.
09:57Sidhu out for north.
10:01So West Indy's still lead by 95 as Ravi Shastri comes in.
10:10And first we get down for India.
10:21This is going to be a very testing session for the Indian batsmen.
10:25They've been out there fielding in the heat for them.
10:28Big part of the day.
10:30Oh, that kept low. Quite another bat.
10:38When somebody six foot six lets the ball go at you, you expect it to bounce an appropriate height.
10:43That was just about bale high. Shastri.
10:48These big fast bowlers have got all sorts of unexpected bounce, high and low, from this pitch at Spina Park.
11:01Oh, he's gone. He's gone.
11:03Look at the shot that he was controlling.
11:05In fact, I think his weight fell back a bit.
11:07And Desmond Haynes is the catcher at the valley.
11:09And Mary Drake is gone.
11:11Haines, out of the picture on the left, has gone deep for that particular shot.
11:18He'd normally be in about four or five yards compared to his position.
11:23And Drake not getting over the top of that.
11:25It was a bit too wide to have any real control.
11:28And although he got a firm middle on the bat,
11:31Haines, who had that extra couple of yards deep in the gully there,
11:34hadn't to move.
11:36He went straight at him very fast at chest height.
11:38The third wicket falls, then, at the 75.
11:43Sonny, at least it's dry-ish.
11:47Courtney Walsh.
11:54That's a good take by Geoff DeJong.
11:57The unevenness of the pitch and the bounce also has a great effect on the wicket-keeper.
12:03Makes his job very difficult, indeed.
12:07Walsh.
12:08Azaruddin.
12:09Do I have to tell you?
12:10He's been burned.
12:11The ball striking the bottom edge of the bat.
12:12And again, Azaruddin trying to play the attacking strokes.
12:14Just checking to see if the bat's intact.
12:16He was always looking to force it, Azaruddin.
12:17And he's aiming to hit this through the covers on the offside.
12:18But it was beating for pace, really.
12:19The bat was still coming down when it hit the edge.
12:20That's comprehensively bold.
12:21Some of the West Indians know in their hearts that they're completing a victory here.
12:25Oh, it must be close.
12:26Oh, it must be close.
12:27Why does Capra show the bat?
12:28Why does Capra show the bat?
12:29It's given, not out.
12:30Oh, it must be close.
12:31Why does Capra show the bat?
12:32It's given, not out.
12:33Oh, it must be close.
12:34Why does Capra show the bat?
12:35It's given, not out.
12:41.
12:47Oh, it must be close.
12:49Why does Capra show the bat?
12:52It's given, not out.
12:54Why does Keppel show the bat? It's given not out.
13:03I don't think he hit that at all. He was a long way from it.
13:06Probably the replay will show that.
13:08The umpire gave that not out because it was missing the leg stump.
13:18Oh dear dear, how is that they say? It's a little nick.
13:22I don't know how you play that. Courtney Walsh is 6'6".
13:27He bangs that in short of a length. Morey expects it to bounce but certainly not as high as that.
13:32He got in a good position and all he could do was really edge it to the wicketkeeper.
13:36You can't blame the batsman for getting out to a ball like that.
13:39Nearly unplayable.
13:41West Indy's then well on their way to victory now.
13:44Seven wickets down. Drizzle.
13:46Drifts across.
13:48The George Headley stand here at Jamaica.
14:00Oh dear dear.
14:01It really was a savage ball to face from Courtney Walsh.
14:06He's a pretty jovial bloke as Zayoub but I should think that's testing his sense of humour.
14:11He's been hit about six times to my memory in this series.
14:14And that's the seventh.
14:16So, take a look at the scorecard there.
14:19Disastrous start with the two noughts for Sidhu and Shastri.
14:23But then a promising stand between Arun Lal, 26, and Mandraka, 41.
14:29But apart from a few blows for freedom by Capital Devon.
14:33Courtney Walsh Lethal Spell rocks India at Kingston, a masterclass in fastballing.
14:39The Spina Bar pitch in Kingston has long been known to aid fastballers, offering sharp bounce
14:46and carry that challenges even the best batters.
14:49And in the fourth test of the 1989 series against India, it became the perfect stage for Courtney
14:55Walsh to deliver one of the finest spell of his career.
14:58Balling with venom, precision and rhythm, Courtney Walsh dismantled the Indian batting line-up,
15:03showcasing everything you want to see in a world-class fastballer.
15:07His spell had everything, pace, bounce, movement and control.
15:11He constantly kept the Indian batsmen on the back foot, unsettling them with hostile spells
15:16from both ends of the innings.
15:18Several deliveries were simply unplayable, a true delight for any lover of fastballing.
15:23His match figures of 10 for 101, 6 for 62 in the first innings and 4 for 39 in the second
15:30innings were a testament to his mastery of conditions and relentless accuracy.
15:35This performance not only earned him the Man of the Match award but further cemented his
15:40reputation as one of the leading fastballers in world cricket.
15:44Currently, Courtney Walsh is the leading wicket-taker for the West Indies.
15:48However, his dominance throughout the India series reflected in the numbers.
15:52He claimed 18 wickets in the four-match series at a stunning average of 14.88, proving to
15:57be the India's chief tormentor.
16:00The West Indies, powered by the Courtney Walsh brilliance and a well-rounded team performance,
16:05cringed the Test series 3-0 and went on to whitewash India 5-0 in the ODI series, asserting
16:11their complete dominance across formats.
16:13It was a series that highlighted the firepower, flair and ruthlessness of West Indies cricket
16:19in its prime.
16:20Courtney Walsh's spell remains asht in cricketing memory, a spellbinding exhibition of fastballing
16:26at its very best.
