00:00Imagine being one of the best spin-ballers in the Caribbean, but you are playing in an
00:04era where your team only wants to bowl fast.
00:08That was the reality for Ronji Nannan.
00:10Born in May 1953, Nannan was a brilliant right-arm offspin from Trinidad.
00:16Unfortunately for him, his career peaked just as West Indies captain Clive Light decided
00:22to unleash a legendary, terrifying four-pronged fast bowling attack.
00:26While the World Watch West Indies Pacers crushed best man, Ronji Nannan was quietly mastering
00:33the art of spin.
00:34Ronji Nannan was an absolute joint in regional cricket.
00:38For nearly 20 years, he was the backbone of Trinidad and Tobago's bowling attack.
00:43His absolute best year came during the 1981–82 season, where he tore through defenses to
00:50take 32 wickets in just five matches.
00:53By the time he retired, he was Trinidad's leading wicket-taker in the competition, finishing
00:59his career with a massive 366 wickets in 94 first-class games.
01:05He was not just a one-trick pony.
01:07Either Nannan was a very capable best man who even scored a first-class century.
01:12Because of the West Indies' obsession with extreme pace, Nannan only ever got to play a
01:17single test match, it happened in Faisalabad against Pakistan during the 1980–81 season.
01:24Even on the big stage, Nannan did not blink.
01:27He grabbed four wickets, showcased incredible control and even took two crucial catches.
01:33Beyond his playing skills, he was a natural leader, captaining Trinidad and Tobago for several
01:38years and guiding them to prestigious Red Stripe Cup title in 1985.
01:44But there was a lot more to Ranji Nannan than just cricket.
01:48He lived a double life as a dedicated police officer.
01:51Even after his playing days were over, he could not stay away from the sport, serving as the
01:57legend officer for the West Indies team to help the next generation.
02:01Sadly, Ranji Nannan suffered a stroke in 2012, and on March 23, 2016, he passed away from a
02:08heart attack at the age of 62, leaving behind his wife and their two sons.
02:14Although he did not get the international fame he deserved, the cricket world never forget
02:19his greatness.
02:20When he passed the legendary Brian Lara Pate tribute, prevailing that he learned how to
02:25play spin by practicing against Nannan, former West Indian fastballer Tony Gray called
02:31him the ultimate professional, a man who loved West Indies cricket with all their heart and
02:36made it nearly impossible for best man to score.
02:40Ranji Nannan may have been a spinner in an era of speed, but he remains the true legend
02:45of the game.
02:46Ranji Nannan was a highly dependable all-rounder, particularly in first-class cricket, where he
02:51spent the bulk of his career across 94 first-class matches.
02:56He proved his worth with the ball by taking an impressive 366 picket at an average of 23.10,
03:04including 25 wicket falls, and a best bowling innings of 7 per 109.
03:09He was no slouch with the bat either scoring 2,607 first-class runs with a highest score of
03:17125, alongside nine half-centuries and a one-century, while his international career was limited
03:23to just a single test match, where he scored 16 runs, took two catches, and claimed four
03:29wickets for 91 runs.
03:31His listed numbers further highlight his utility, contributing 45 wickets with a brilliant economy
03:37of 3.24 and adding 201 runs across 35 appearances.
03:429 minutes of the game.
