Close Calls On Camera S10E05 (15th April 2022)
Transcript
00:00A close call. A moment of danger when life can hang in the balance.
00:05It was absolute panic and fear.
00:08A split second where the outcome could go either way.
00:11They'd have been lucky if they'd have stayed conscious.
00:13The difference between disaster and survival.
00:16It's literally, that's all it takes.
00:20These are the people that have been there and lived to tell the tale.
00:24I was terrified. I thought I was gonna die.
00:27It's a day they'll never forget.
00:29The day they had a close call.
00:46Today on Close Calls.
00:49A distraught son calls 999.
00:53Is he conscious?
00:55Is he conscious?
00:56Yes, he's conscious. No, he's not breathing quick.
00:59He's not responsive.
01:01He was very quickly turning blue.
01:03The patient is their dad and he's having a heart attack in the garden.
01:08So I'm organising that help for you now. Just stay on the line with me.
01:11Also today, a rally car somersaults off the track after taking a hill too fast.
01:20The car just started to take a nosedive.
01:24It's just that heart and gut drop where you go, oh no.
01:28The co-driver's screams are audible.
01:31All I could see was the ground coming towards me and that split second of this impact's gonna hurt.
01:38Burnley, Lancashire.
01:51A 999 call picks up a daughter's battle to save her father during a heart attack.
01:57Dad, come on. Dad, I've got you. Dad.
02:01Working on my dad, it felt like forever.
02:03Help is on the way.
02:05We can hear a siren.
02:07Come on, Michael.
02:09Keep going.
02:15Are you up to that brew?
02:17I know he is.
02:1856-year-old Michael is Burnley-born and bred and works night shifts as an HGV driver for a busy supermarket chain.
02:27We do a nine-and-a-quarter-hour shift. It's very hard, obviously. Very hard work.
02:33His wife, Catherine, has been his constant support for 31 years.
02:38I met Michael when I was 16 in a pub down Burnley and we've been together ever since.
02:45Yeah, it's brilliant. You know, we always get on.
02:49We love each other and it works, yeah.
02:53She's a lovely, lovely woman.
02:54She looks after me.
02:56The couple have three children.
02:58The eldest is Ben.
03:00The proper lad.
03:02Geordie.
03:03She's a little diamond.
03:04She's very, very caring, very, very loving and she'll do anything for anybody.
03:09And our Bradley, again, he's just a lovely, caring lad.
03:12All three of them, they love the dad.
03:13Well, they love the family.
03:1524-year-old Jodie is a nursery practitioner working with preschool children.
03:21I love my job, love working with children.
03:24It's really rewarding.
03:27Her fiancé, Luke, lives with the family.
03:30They're all very close and enjoy spending time together when Michael shifts allow.
03:35He does five nights on and then he has three nights off.
03:39And as a family, we just try to get out and about on them three days.
03:42We get along with them the majority of the time.
03:44I think that's normal in a family.
03:47Yeah, it's a full household.
03:50Like I said, I love them all to bits.
03:52I'll probably be lost when they all leave home, to be honest.
03:54But one spring day, it's Michael, the family are in danger of losing and it's down to daughter Jodie to save him.
04:01It's a Sunday in May.
04:09Michael gets back from a busy shift at around 7am.
04:13He just had his breakfast and went to bed like he normally does.
04:17But in the past few weeks, he's occasionally had unusual pains in his arm.
04:34While he's asleep, Catherine and Jodie go shopping.
04:38Normally, when me and Jodie go shopping, we don't come home.
04:41So it just got where I just said, you know, I want to go home.
04:43I've got a meal to put on.
04:45Back at the house, Michael wakes early.
04:47I had this pain again at the electric shop.
04:50And then I got up.
04:52I just thought I couldn't sleep.
04:54So I shook my arm.
04:57It just went, that was it, gone.
04:59He decides against going back to bed.
05:02Shortly after, Jodie and Catherine arrive back home.
05:05I could hear Michael in the shower, which was really unusual
05:08because he sleeps right up till tea time, you know,
05:12and it's a challenge to get him out of bed, you know, to get his tea.
05:15He said, Daddy, all right?
05:16And he shouted back, yeah, love, I'm fine.
05:18I said, I'm going to make a brew.
05:20I'm going to go in the garden.
05:21Are you coming downstairs?
05:22He said, yeah.
05:23It's a warm day.
05:25Youngest son Bradley is in the garden,
05:27Jodie and Luke are in their room, and Ben is in his.
05:31Bradley wants to go in the hot tub,
05:33so I helped him take the hot tub cover off and stood it up
05:39and then Bradley got in the hot tub,
05:41picked my brew up and then sat down in the chair.
05:46I had my back to him because I was gardening
05:48and I could hear this tapping,
05:50so I just turned around because he'd stopped answering me.
05:54He was shaking and it was his cup of coffee that was banging.
06:00Catherine screams for help.
06:01Ben responds immediately, running into the garden.
06:05In their room, Jodie and Luke hear the commotion.
06:08My brother was shouting my name, screaming,
06:11Jodie, it's dead, he's dying, he's dead, you need to help him.
06:15I'm screaming, I think he's having a stroke.
06:17I was trying to wake him up and I just knew
06:19that there was something seriously wrong.
06:22He was very quickly turning blue.
06:24First aid trained thanks to her job,
06:26Jodie suspects she knows what it is.
06:29Jodie said he's not having a stroke,
06:31he's having an heart attack, Mum.
06:34Ben dials 999 from the house.
06:36This is his call.
06:39Ambulance service, is the patient breathing?
06:42I don't know, is he breathing?
06:43No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
06:46OK, tell me exactly what's happened.
06:49I don't know.
06:50Please, he's not breathing.
06:52OK, what's the address of the emergency?
06:56In the background, Jodie can be heard screaming at her dad to wake up.
07:00Her mum is in shock.
07:01I didn't know what to do, and Jodie just took over
07:04and she's like, just leave me.
07:06Mum, just go.
07:07Let me deal with this.
07:09Is he conscious?
07:11Is he conscious?
07:12Yes, he's conscious.
07:13No, he's not breathing quick.
07:16He's not responsive.
07:17OK.
07:18So I'm organising that help for you now,
07:20just stay on the line with me.
07:22With the likely cause of cardiac arrest,
07:25the nearest ambulance is immediately dispatched.
07:29Newly qualified Robin is on board.
07:31She decided to train after an ambulance team
07:33saved her own dad a few years ago.
07:37This is my first actual cardiac arrest.
07:39You know it's time critical and you've got to be on your game.
07:42Everything goes through your mind as to what could be,
07:44what needs doing, and you kind of make a plan of action.
07:48In the garden, Jodie takes charge,
07:51getting her dad into the recovery position.
07:53Next, Luke takes over the call from a distraught Ben.
07:57If there is a defibrillator available,
07:59send someone to get in now and tell me when you have it.
08:03Michael's heart needs to be shocked back into rhythm.
08:06Luke sets off to find a community defibrillator
08:09at a local sports club.
08:11As he does, the family's next-door neighbour, Danielle,
08:14arrives to help.
08:15She works in a care home and is also first aid trained.
08:18We need to start CPR, OK?
08:21Lay him flat on his back on the floor
08:23and remove anything under his head.
08:25You need to roll him onto his back and start CPR.
08:29Danielle takes over the call.
08:32Hello.
08:32Are you there?
08:33We need to start chest compressions, OK?
08:35Please.
08:35Right, OK.
08:36Later, the ambulance crew arrive
08:42and Robin tries to shock Michael back to life,
08:45but there's no response.
08:48You know the further shocks you give,
08:50the less chance of it correcting is going to happen.
08:53They try again, but Michael remains unresponsive.
08:57They were saying, we're getting no response.
08:59We're going to have to call it.
09:01BILTH WELLS, MIDWALES
09:12The British Rally Championships
09:14A car approaches an early crest on the track at high speed,
09:19but the driver's miscalculated.
09:22I remember thinking, this is a quick one.
09:25This is a really quick one.
09:27Too quick.
09:28All I could see was the ground coming towards me
09:31in that split second of, this impact's going to hurt.
09:45Rally driver and specialist mechanic Ollie
09:47helps run his family's garage business in Bakewell, Derbyshire.
09:51He's 26 now, but his love of motorsports
09:54began at a very early age.
09:56Not surprising, really.
09:58It's in the genes.
09:59His dad, Chris, was national rally champion in the 1990s.
10:04From, like, two, three years old, I was on quad bikes.
10:07I was flipping those, and, you know, he's the standard kid, no fear.
10:11As soon as I could get into a car, I was driving.
10:14The family doesn't just cater to the regular vehicle repair trade.
10:19They build race cars and provide support
10:21for some of motorsport's top events.
10:24Ollie was up for that early on too.
10:26I'd help out as much as I can going on events,
10:31mechanicing for the drivers we had.
10:35But he was itching to compete.
10:37He got his UK road licence a week after his 17th birthday
10:41and entered his first UK event soon after.
10:44He had his choice of wheels.
10:46So I was always using the best car, if you like,
10:49which is always a nice way to start.
10:50You know, the new kid on the block gets quite a nice,
10:53fancy four-wheel drive car to go and play in.
10:56Fast forward nine years,
10:57and he's following in his father's tyre tracks,
10:59competing in the British National Championships
11:02in an R5 rally car,
11:04designed and developed, of course, in the family garage.
11:08It's an expensive sport we're in,
11:11but, you know, we've got fantastic sponsors
11:12that help us along the way.
11:16But rally driving needs two up,
11:19and Ollie's co-driver and navigator
11:21is mechanical engineer Max.
11:23Also born into the sport with a racing dad,
11:26he too began competing at an early age.
11:28It's a hell of an adrenaline rush,
11:32and as soon as I could compete myself,
11:34I was hooked straight away.
11:36The pair first took to the track together
11:38when Max's regular driver pulled out of a national event.
11:42We thought, oh, we'll just do it.
11:44It's a bit of fun and see how we get on.
11:46By the time we were halfway through the rally,
11:48we were leading.
11:49And then we did the next couple of stages,
11:53and we won the rally by about seven seconds.
11:55To come away with a win on that first event
11:56when everything's just gelled and worked well together
11:59from the off, it's really good.
12:01A couple of years later,
12:03they formed a regular partnership
12:04to tackle the new season,
12:06with Ollie in the driving seat
12:07and Max as co-driver, a vital role.
12:12The navigator's responsible for pre-event organisation
12:15and makes meticulous pace notes of the course.
12:19Inside the car, I'm the boss,
12:21and I will tell you everything,
12:24and it's got to be done perfectly.
12:25I basically sit there and drive the thing.
12:28We've got to have complete trust in each other.
12:31We both get in the car,
12:33knowing the possibilities of what could happen,
12:35but at the end of the day,
12:36we're competing to win a rally.
12:37But there's only a hair's breadth
12:39between pushing a car to its limits
12:41and exceeding them,
12:43and one tiny error can have devastating consequences.
12:46It's July, and Ollie and Max are about to compete
12:53in the second round of the British National Championships in Wales.
12:57I was hoping to be putting times in with the best.
13:00We were high on confidence.
13:02We'd done a lot of preparation,
13:04and we wanted to make a big push for a win.
13:07The day before the race,
13:09they're allowed two opportunities
13:10to drive the stages in a standard road car
13:13that can't exceed 30 miles an hour.
13:16In the race, they'll reach speeds of up to 100.
13:19We'll run a DVD in the car.
13:23At the end of the day, we'll go back to the hotel,
13:25and Max will then go through the notes
13:27whilst we're watching the DVD.
13:29The first stage was just, like, crest after crest, a jump.
13:34The opening stage was going to be one
13:35that would reward the brave.
13:37But will punish any errors.
13:42Their friend Chris is one of the cameramen
13:44who'll be capturing the action.
13:46Ollie and Max, they're there to win.
13:48They're absolutely to take home
13:49the British Rally Championships.
13:52Chris has also done a recce of the course
13:54looking for the best spots to film the drama.
13:57At dinner with the lads,
13:58he brings up the second crest on stage one.
14:01I just remember saying,
14:03do you think you guys will get some air there?
14:04Ollie just looked at me across the table and was like,
14:07yeah, we'll be airborne.
14:09And that's all he said, yeah, we'll be airborne.
14:11Cool, that's my spot for the morning then.
14:158am, race day.
14:18Ollie and Max arrive at the start of stage one.
14:22You sit there, you get ready,
14:24last check your belts are tight,
14:25your in-car camera's on,
14:27you shake your hands with your co-driver
14:29and say, all right, let's have a good one.
14:31The in-car camera records the view
14:33through the front windscreen.
14:36Max counts down.
14:373, 2, 1, go.
14:40As soon as that light turns green,
14:42you pin back into the seat
14:44and you're launching off that line as fast as you can go.
14:46Start over right, 100.
14:48Max calls out his pace notes.
14:50In two.
14:51They take the first crest in third gear.
14:55We were absolutely perfect on the first crest.
14:58Beyond the brow of the second,
15:00Chris is filming, just out of frame in this shot.
15:03It's a big jump.
15:04Keep right over crest, jump.
15:06Ollie and Max know what's coming.
15:08There was a particular route that we would have to take.
15:12I just pulled fifth gear.
15:14I was so confident in the note
15:15that I was just going to hit it flat out.
15:17Chris is glued to his viewfinder
15:19as each car comes over the brow.
15:21I remember car number five thinking,
15:23this is a quick one.
15:25This is a really quick one.
15:27It's Ollie and Max in their distinctive orange car.
15:31At that point, it was like, he's going,
15:33like, this is good for him.
15:35Low down in the car, unsighted,
15:37Max is focused.
15:39When you get to the top of the crest,
15:41you get that weightless feeling.
15:42And instantly, it was,
15:44this is a lot bigger than I thought it was going to be.
15:47He's right.
15:48It is.
15:48Before his back wheels had even left into complete midair,
16:06the car just started to take a nosedive.
16:09It's just that heart and gut drop,
16:12immediate kind of sickness where you go,
16:14oh, no.
16:16A stills photographer captures these images.
16:19All four wheels are around 20 feet off the ground.
16:23I knew that it was going to be a real big accident.
16:26Max had a bit of a shock.
16:27All I could see was the ground coming towards me
16:30and that split second of this impact's going to hurt.
16:33And the driver's seat, Ollie prepares himself.
16:36This is his view.
16:38I've got the steering wheel
16:39and I've got the pedals to kind of brace myself.
16:42Max has got a foot plate.
16:44Everything's all moving at 100 miles an hour in one motion.
16:48But when the impact occurs,
16:50obviously the car's stopped before I've stopped.
16:53So you've got that 100 mile an hour to zero stop.
16:57The front end takes the first impact
16:59before the car rebounds and somersaults over and over again.
17:04You just try and keep your arms in as tight as you can,
17:09keep your feet braced on the pedals
17:10and try and wait for it all to stop.
17:14I remember pulling my arms into my chest,
17:17but I felt the force acting against that.
17:21Max's legs came up.
17:22He actually kicked, if you like, the top of the roll cage.
17:27The door came off, the dashboard came out.
17:31Soil and glass and all sorts.
17:32And they're not the only ones in trouble.
17:36Chris, just a few metres from the somersaulting vehicle,
17:39sees it first through the camera lens.
17:41I had to look through my own eyes
17:43to make sure what's flying off the car,
17:45what projectiles might head my direction.
17:47And as the car rolls, I could hear Max.
17:52Every time the car hit,
17:53he would scream and let out a wail.
17:58My legs, I couldn't keep them in one position.
18:01I felt the pain of my foot as the crash was happening.
18:07After six full cartwheels,
18:09they come to a stop in a cloud of dust and debris.
18:13I was so worried for Ollie.
18:14There was no noise.
18:15He was absolutely silent.
18:17Chris, the stills photographer and race marshals,
18:20run to the car.
18:21It's in bits and everything's dinted.
18:26Everything's ripped.
18:27The steam coming out of the radiator.
18:29There's oil spewing out all over the grass.
18:31Inside the wreck, Ollie is concerned for his pal.
18:35The first thing is obviously,
18:36ask Max if he's all right.
18:38Initially, I think he was quite shocked.
18:40That's when the cameraman came over.
18:42They basically asked if I was all right.
18:43And I was like, yeah, I'm fine.
18:44Just please go around and make sure he's all right.
18:47I'll suck myself.
18:48Max is dazed.
18:51He just looked kind of down at his feet.
18:54He said, I just want a minute.
18:55Just give me a minute.
18:56And after about ten seconds, he just went,
19:00I'm fine.
19:03I've absolutely broken my ankle
19:05and I'm going to need help out of the car.
19:08Ollie is already on his feet.
19:10The event is live streaming,
19:12so he phones his dad to let him know they're OK,
19:15as Chris and a marshal help Max from the vehicle.
19:19Dad was going on saying, are you all right?
19:21Are you all right?
19:21I said, I'm fine.
19:22The car's not all right.
19:24It's completely gone.
19:25There's nothing left.
19:26Rescue crews arrive within ten minutes
19:28and examine Max.
19:30You know, I was in proper FIA-approved boots
19:34and it did keep my foot all in one piece.
19:38When I removed the boot,
19:39then it was obvious that there was a lot of damage done to my foot.
19:42The course is cleared and officials prepare to tow away
19:46the remains of the shattered car.
19:50Max is taken off the course by ambulance
19:52and Ollie returns to the start to join him.
19:56The crash has put an end to their hopes for this year's championship.
20:01It was a pretty hard pill to swallow.
20:04At hospital, Max is transferred to a specialist unit.
20:08He's told his foot will take six weeks to heal,
20:10about the same time it will take to rebuild the car.
20:15I'm just itching to get back into a rally car room.
20:18We'll be competing on events.
20:20We'll still continue to do as much as we can
20:21and it's just building experience.
20:23Chris believes they had a very close call.
20:26Testament to the car and to the team,
20:28but Ollie and Max,
20:30they used up one of their nine lives that day,
20:32as far as I'm concerned.
20:33They're having another go at the championships again next year,
20:46so good luck to them
20:47and maybe just a little bit slower next time, lads.
20:50Now back to a family in turmoil,
20:52desperately trying to save their devoted dad.
20:56But when another member of the family turns up to help,
20:58things get even worse.
21:00In the back garden of his home in Burnley,
21:09dad of three, Michael, is in cardiac arrest.
21:12His eldest son, Ben, has called 999.
21:16Is he conscious?
21:17Is he conscious?
21:19No, he's not breathing quick.
21:21He's not responsive.
21:24Michael's wife, Catherine, is in shock.
21:26Daughter Jodie and neighbour Danielle,
21:29both first aid trained, are doing their best to save him.
21:32Hello.
21:33Are you there?
21:33We need to start chest compressions, OK?
21:36Right, OK, yes.
21:37So make sure he is flat on his back on the floor.
21:41Place the heel of your hand on the breastbone
21:43right between the mittels.
21:44Danielle begins CPR
21:46and Jodie takes over the call.
21:48Hello.
21:49Are you there?
21:50Can you hear me all?
21:51So that helps come in as quickly as we can.
21:53My mum had rang her brother and my dad's sister
21:57in total meltdown,
22:00so they all arrived at the house as well.
22:02In the chaos, Catherine's brother Lee slips on the kitchen floor,
22:06falls and breaks his leg.
22:08I had my brother in here in absolute agonist, screaming,
22:13and I just thought, what is happening?
22:17Oldest son, Ben, calls for a second ambulance.
22:20And I don't think the ambulance service believed it.
22:23With confusion all round, Jodie battles to keep control.
22:27Everyone were in and out and trying to see to Dad,
22:30but I was pushing them away
22:32because I didn't want them to ultimately see him
22:35like I was seeing him.
22:36One, two, three, four.
22:39My dad's face was just going blue.
22:42He was still making noises at this point,
22:45so I was just holding on to that.
22:47She takes over the CPR from Danielle.
22:50Dad, come on. Dad, I've got you.
22:54Working on my dad, it felt like forever.
22:56How long are they going to be?
22:58Unfortunately, I don't get to see where it's coming from,
23:00but I'll show you it is on one of our highest responses.
23:03Come on, Mick.
23:04Come on, Dad.
23:05Come on.
23:06Two, three, four.
23:07Don't want to take over.
23:08No, you are actually fine.
23:09Come on.
23:10Jodie and Danielle take turns keeping up the exhausting compressions.
23:15Then, the sound they've been praying for.
23:18We can hear a siren.
23:20Just felt relieved.
23:22Come on, Michael.
23:23Keep going.
23:24A CCTV camera on the front of the house shows the scene as the ambulance pulls up.
23:31And I'm just like, hurry up, please, just hurry up.
23:33He really needs you.
23:34Let me know when they're right there with him.
23:36I will do.
23:37The crew head through the house to the garden, passing Catherine's brother in the kitchen.
23:43And he'd had an obvious break to his leg, so we had to kind of dismiss that one and walk through into the garden.
23:51Right, there we go.
23:51OK, I'll leave you with them, OK?
23:54All right, then.
23:55Take care, now.
23:56Jodie was doing really well.
23:58Obviously, she was upset and distressed.
24:00He was her dad at the end of the day.
24:01We knew we needed to get an airway in, and we needed to keep CPR going as quick as possible and get a defib on him.
24:07We got Jodie to carry on while we managed to do everything else.
24:10Robin and her team-mate carry a defibrillator on board.
24:14They administer a shock, but there's no response from Michael.
24:18It's quite down-heartened.
24:20You want it to work, and you know the further shocks you give, the less chance of it correcting is going to happen.
24:25I came away because he weren't responding.
24:28I think they wanted everyone just away so they could work on him.
24:32The crew increased the power and administer a second shock.
24:37Luckily, that did work, and he came back into sinus rhythm.
24:40However, it is quite common that they can then slip back into a VF arrest again.
24:44So this is exactly what happened with Michael.
24:46With the body language, with the colleague, that something just wasn't right, that they weren't getting any response from him.
24:53They were saying, we're getting no response.
24:55We're going to have to call it.
24:58But Robin isn't prepared to give up yet.
25:01They try one more time.
25:04It works.
25:05Michael's heart returns to a normal rhythm.
25:09Next, he's given adrenaline to help increase the blood flow to his heart.
25:13At this point, he started to begin to groan, which obviously gave us an indication that he was somewhat coming to.
25:19I could see him looking round and I thought, oh, you know, he's here.
25:27But he needs to be in hospital.
25:29A second ambulance arrives for Catherine's brother.
25:32Its crew assists Robin and her colleague, putting Michael into the ambulance.
25:36They let us have a minute with him at the front just to say, like, we'd loved him and, you know, we'd be there for him.
25:43I went in and gave him a kiss and said, I'll see you soon.
25:47Michael is rushed to nearby Blackburn Hospital.
25:50The second ambulance leaves with Catherine's brother.
25:52The rest of the family, followed by Carl.
25:56The next thing I remember is being in hospital and seeing Catherine's brother.
26:05He didn't know why he was there.
26:07And I just said, Michael, you've had a cardiac arrest.
26:10And then he said, I've seen your brother here.
26:13Why is he here?
26:14I said, because he's broke his leg in our kitchen.
26:16He was just so confused.
26:17He was like, why has he broke his leg in my kitchen?
26:19Catherine's brother is discharged after four days and, once he's well enough,
26:25Michael is transferred to a specialist unit at Blackpool and fitted with a stent.
26:31Four days later, he's allowed home.
26:34He's since had a second stent fitted and is well on the way to a full recovery.
26:39He's very grateful to Jodie and neighbour Danielle.
26:43I'd never be able to repair him and I'm really grateful.
26:47I think it's affected Jodie very much, which hurts me really.
26:56Jodie suffered panic attacks after the incident and has been diagnosed with PTSD.
27:01She's a strong girl and I know with the help that she is getting that she will come through it.
27:08Jodie's already raising money for more local defibrillators.
27:11I've come up with the idea of walking the Three Peaks in Yorkshire.
27:17There's so many businesses, I can't even think of them all that have donated.
27:21The first one has been installed at the local chippy and there's enough money for another two.
27:27Michael still hasn't been able to return to his driving job, but he knows he had a very lucky escape.
27:33I died.
27:34He was on the brink of declaring me.
27:37And it's partly down to his daughter that he pulled through.
27:41Jodie's amazing.
27:43That was probably some of the best bystander CPR that I've seen in a long time.
27:47They said without CPR in them first few minutes, she'd have had no chance.
27:53So I have a lot to thank my neighbour for as well because I wouldn't have been able to do it without her.
27:57Good to see Michael on the road to recovery.
