As College Yayasan UEM celebrates this year's Awards Day, what stands out isn't just the
00:10
impressive destinations graduates are headed to but the transformation they've undergone to get
00:14
there. Among them is Petronas scholar and Sabah-born Uzair Zuhri Sharif, who's soon heading
00:21
to the University of Southampton to study electrical engineering. So I was born in Sabah but
00:27
I was raised in Labuan. My father is a teacher but he's currently retired and my mother is a
00:34
freelancer worker. Surprisingly I'm the only student from Labuan and every time I mention that to
00:42
someone they're always like, huh where's Labuan? It pushes me to do greater and once and for all put
00:47
Labuan on the map. What inspired Uzair most was KYUEM's environment, one that not only encourages
00:55
ambition but also fosters a culture where students are empowered to speak up and stand out.
01:02
From what I've learned at KYUEM, I would say I wouldn't hesitate to ask others for help but you
01:10
have to understand that in life there are just some things that you can't really do yourself. When the
01:16
time calls just find someone ask for their help because it doesn't really make you less of a
01:24
person. I've seen him change a lot and academically, socially his ups and downs but now I can see that
01:32
his academics have improved and his social life has improved well also.
01:38
Food Uzair's story is just one example of the many journeys students at KYUEM have taken.
01:46
This year's Awards Day, held on June 28th, celebrated 268 A-level graduates as they began their journeys
01:54
to top universities with proud parents and warm applause honoring their hard work.
01:59
Over 25 years, the college has sent 108 students to Cambridge, 38 to Oxford and hundreds more to
02:08
top UK and US universities, proving its enduring legacy of excellence.
02:16
KYUEM has played a crucial role in shaping its alumni, influencing who they become and the paths
02:21
they take long after they finish their studies. This legacy was reflected at this year's Awards Day,
02:28
which welcomed back Novan Amiruddin, Group CEO of CIMB and a member of KYUEM's Pioneer Batch.
02:36
The college is the turning point for me. It taught me more than just education. We learn to basically
02:43
mix around and work with people from different backgrounds, different experiences and different
02:50
perspectives. So that diversity is the one that really shaped me and helped me
02:58
to navigate the corporate world after that. For students like Namira Lee, a Pomodala National
03:05
Burhat scholar who earned a place at Harvard, KYUEM opened doors she once thought were closed.
03:12
Before I came to KYUEM, I wasn't thinking of applying to IVs or Oxbridge at all. I come from a
03:19
daily school in Terengganu and those kinds of universities, they just felt really far away.
03:25
But when you're here, you're going to be surrounded by people who openly talk about IVs or Oxbridge
03:33
and eventually something would shift inside of you. So I went from being someone who was unsure about
03:40
aiming high to being confident with whatever abilities I have.
03:44
We noticed that the KYUEM community is very good, very friendly and here she also finds a lot of friends
03:59
who can help her in whatever she do. Yayasan UEM scholar Wan Noorain Adjerana Hassan, who will soon study at
04:09
University College London, said KYUEM taught her to adapt to different personalities, a skill she knows
04:16
will serve her well. Everyone has different characters. So I feel like that changed me, that
04:22
changed my mindset. You know, not everyone is the same. So we need to be able to adapt to different
04:27
people. Yeah, I think that's something that I could apply in the future. Acting Principal Kasturi
04:32
Thirithi Lagamuni Krishnan said the students' achievements are a reflection of more than just
04:37
rigorous academics. Academic excellence is a culture, really. You know, it is a combination of everything.
04:48
The teachers, they don't just teach. They don't just deliver lessons. You know, they are always setting
04:56
very high standards. They expect a lot and they expect their students to meet their expectations.
05:04
You know, they take responsibility for their own learning, that independent thinking. I think it
05:10
is those things that make it really work in terms of academic excellence. For KYUEM graduates,
05:20
the road ahead is full of possibility and they're more than ready to take it on.
