Liverpool devastated by death of Diogo Jota in car crash

Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota has died in a car crash in Spain aged 28. He was found dead alongside his brother Andre Silva.

00:14The Portuguese football federation said it was devastated to learn of the pair's deaths,

00:19adding their deaths represent irreparable losses for Portuguese football.

00:24Police said no other vehicles were involved in the incident and investigations are continuing.

00:29Jotas was part of Liverpool's Premier League winning side in the 2024-25 campaign,

00:35scoring six goals in 26 appearances.

00:37Liverpool Football Club said they are devastated by the news and that it was an unimaginable loss.

00:43In a statement the Portuguese national team said Diogo Jotas was not only a fantastic player

00:48with almost 50 caps for the national team,

00:50but also an extraordinary person who was respected by all his teammates and opponents.

00:55He had a contagious joy and was a reference point in his own community.

01:00Jotas married his long-term partner, Ruta Cardoso, on the 22nd of June in Portugal.

01:06The pair got together in 2013. It's been reported and have three children together,

01:11two sons and a daughter who was born in November.

01:14Jotas frequently shared photos of himself and his family on his social media accounts

01:20while his wife had posted images of their holidays together.

01:23They also have three pets.

01:26On Wednesday, Jotas and Cardoso, 28, posted video footage of their wedding with the caption,

01:32a day we will never forget.

01:35Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy told the Commons the whole house is heartbroken by this news,

01:40adding, I wanted to send our sympathies to his family on behalf of the whole house.
