00:00Here in Taipei, Friends of Tibet are sharing the practices of Tibetan Buddhism at a special
00:11exhibit ahead of the Dalai Lama's 90th birthday. Organized by the Human Rights Network for Tibet
00:16and Taiwan, the week-long display aims to walk visitors through the history of Tibet and the
00:22Dalai Lama's significance as a spiritual leader and as a leader in human rights advocacy. The
00:29spiritual leader has been living in exile in India after the Tibetan uprising in 1959 following
00:34threats from China. Beijing has put pressure on the Dalai Lama to recognize China's sovereignty
00:39over Tibet and Taiwan, which the Tibetan government-in-exile has rejected.
00:43The reality is that you can't see in the world, but you can see a lot in the
00:50country. You can see a lot in the world. So we think that Taiwan's
00:54country and today's event is very important to the Chinese and Chinese.
01:06The Dalai Lama has visited Taiwan three times, even meeting with former presidents
01:10Li Denghui and Chen Shui-bian. While his last visit was over a decade ago in 2009,
01:16he still praised Taiwan's commitment to democracy when congratulating President
01:19Lai Qingde on taking office last year. The exhibit aims to put the practices of
01:24Tibetan Buddhism that are taboo in China front and center, like placing the Dalai Lama's image on
01:30altars. It also includes artworks inspired by the Dalai Lama's advocacy for Tibet, Taiwan,
01:36Hong Kong and Uyghurs, marking his decades-long impact around the world.
