Residents and visitors prepare for firework display between 6pm-11pm

Residents and visitors in the Northern Territory are preparing to celebrate territory day marking the anniversary of self-governance in 1978. Emergency services are warning people to be sensible when fireworks become legal between 6 and 11-pm.

00:00Well as you can see behind me, Territorians take their one day of the year where they

00:06can set off fireworks pretty seriously.

00:09And for a little while it didn't look like that would happen this year.

00:12There was a bit of a diplomatic stout between NT and New South Wales authorities over some

00:17fireworks that were seized on their way into the country bound for the Northern Territory.

00:22But that's been all resolved now so I'm sure a lot of Territorians will be thankful and

00:27we've seen crowds streaming in throughout the fireworks retailers all day ready to buy

00:32their crackers in time for this evening.

00:35Of course there will be people with pets who might not be looking forward to Territory Day

00:40celebrations.

00:41It does tend to be a bit chaotic and definitely one of the busiest days of the year for emergency

00:46doctors, for bushfires NT, for paramedics out there.

00:51So it's really important that Territorians are very safe with their use of fireworks so

00:56in particular that they don't aim them at people or property and make sure that they're

01:00enjoying the night responsibly, picking up any rubbish after themselves and making sure

01:06that they're not causing any greater risk by setting the fireworks off throughout the

01:11night.

01:12You do have to hand in your fireworks as well after Territory Day so make sure you use them

01:18up tonight or you send them back to the authorities shortly afterwards to make sure that you're not

01:23breaking any laws which heavily regulate the use of fireworks in the NT but of course the

01:29most important message is to enjoy the night responsibly.
