00:00Incredibly, this is not Nick's biggest haul. He once broke up a posse of five mating mambas
00:08nesting in a compost heap. The female mamba will move around in the mating season, leaving
00:18pheromones behind, a scent trail, and the male mambas pick up that trail using their forked
00:24tongue. The forked tongue freaks people out, but it's just for smelling. When snakes flicker
00:32their tongue out, they pick up scent particles in the air, and when the tongue goes back into
00:36the mouth, the tongue goes into the Jacobson's organ. There's a little opening at the top
00:40of the mouth, and that communicates with the brain, and that analyzes those scent particles.
00:46By using their sense of smell, they decide whether they're going to eat it, run from
00:49it, or mate with it.
