Matthew Potts “can’t fault effort” from Durham after tough day against Surrey

00:00Durham's Matthew Potts has said that he cannot fault the effort of his teammates

00:04as they endured a tough first day against Surrey at the Oval,

00:08picking up only three wickets.

00:10Yeah, you know, I mean, I can't fault the lads' efforts today.

00:13They put 110% in and we know we probably came up short with the ball

00:17and some good batting on a good batting track.

00:20So, you know, yeah, pretty rough day, 30-odd degrees,

00:24hard work and tall for the boys.

00:25But, yeah, we'll pick ourselves up and there's still a long way to go

00:28in this game for the next three days.

00:30When you got to the ground this morning and had a look at that pitch,

00:33what was sort of the talk amongst you guys as the bowlers?

00:36Did you think there was going to be something in there?

00:37Well, when we had a look at it, we thought there was a little bit of green grass on it.

00:41It was still pretty hard.

00:43We thought either or it was going to do a bit.

00:45We knew that if we were bowling, it was going to be trying to bowl them out in a day.

00:49We didn't think it was certainly going to be a pitch where you kind of knock everyone over.

00:54And, you know, it's actually proved to play a hell of a lot better than we first thought.

00:57You know, it hasn't really moved too much all day.

01:00And it's came up in the back quite nicely after the first little period.

01:02So, you know, kind of credit there, guys.

01:05They batted well.

01:06And we probably just missed our straps a little bit.

01:08And Middlesbrough's new head coach, Rob Edwards, has stressed that the supporters of the Teesiders

01:13are the most important people at the club, as he has looked to strike up a good relationship with them.

01:19The fans are the most important people at any football club because they're there before us and they'll be there long after us as well.

01:27And I've always said that, I've always maintained that.

01:29So I want a really good relationship with them.

01:31But we get that.

01:33We earn that with performances and results.

01:36So I'm under no illusions as to that.

01:40I've been lucky in the clubs that I've been at previously, Forest Green and then obviously Luton again.

01:44And then we started that quite quickly and got people onside, you know, fast.

01:48So it's all well and good talking, a good game.

01:50We've got to be able to go and deliver that.

01:52And, you know, so there'll be expectancy here.

01:56You know, and I'm up for that.

01:57I'm up for that.

01:58You mentioned the Riverside.

01:59You've had a few experiences in the past.

02:01How do you reflect on your time at that?

02:03It's an amazing place to play and a really difficult place to come and coach against.

02:08You know, when these fans are at it, I've felt that whenever I've come up to the North East, to be honest.
