00:00In the news overseas, though nowhere near the atmospheric abundance like carbon dioxide,
00:05methane is an odorless gas that is highly flammable and gets trapped in the atmosphere
00:10if released without burning.
00:12Usually found in cattle excretions, methane rises up to the atmosphere
00:16and stays there for about 10 years before dematerializing or vanishing.
00:20A technologically advanced satellite that's been recently launched
00:23is helping to provide more accurate and consistent findings on methane emissions,
00:27as VOA's Julie Taubo reports.
00:31And liftoff, 29.
00:34This past March, private spaceflight company SpaceX carried into space a satellite
00:39that's using advanced technology to measure methane emissions around the world.
00:44Methane sat, separation confirmed.
00:47Manufactured by Colorado-based Blue Canyon Technologies and roughly the size of a washing machine,
00:53methane sat will circle every part of the Earth
00:55to measure how much of the planet-warming gas has been emitted into our atmosphere
00:59and how those emissions vary.
01:01Methane sat would be one of the first satellites that's actually not only able to measure the source of emission,
01:07but to actually monitor it over time so they can see if it's getting better, if it's getting worse.
01:12Methane emitted through human activity accounts for about 30 percent of the warming
01:16the planet is currently experiencing.
01:18And the gas is more than 28 times as potent as carbon dioxide
01:22at trapping heat in our atmosphere.
01:25Methane sat, developed by the Environmental Defense Fund
01:28in collaboration with several partners,
01:30will initially focus on fossil fuel production,
01:33which is the second largest human-made contributor to methane emissions after agriculture.
01:38We've been leading efforts to understand methane emissions
01:41from the oil and gas industry for well over 10 years now.
01:45And several years ago, we realized that we couldn't collect enough data
01:50to really be able to capture those emissions on an ongoing basis.
01:55The data will help scientists assess where reductions need to be made and by whom.
02:00The key here is going to empirical data, high-quality data,
02:04data that we can trust and that we can then utilize to really understand the problem.
02:09Methane sat will yield what the team says will be the most comprehensive data set
02:13ever produced for a single industry.
02:16In the meantime, preliminary data from the satellite will be accessible to the public
02:20free of charge within the next six months.
