Asked about stand your ground legislation, the new Commissioner gave this perspective.

00:00What I would like to say is that the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service is, above anything else, a law enforcement agency.
00:08We do not create law. We enforce the law.
00:11So if the government's policy is to institute stand-your-ground legislation, the TTPS would be there to enforce that law.
00:19What I can say is that at present, they already have provisions for self-defense written into the law.
00:27So I would see that we can already stand our ground in certain circumstances, but the stand-your-ground legislation may be more specific.
00:37So let's wait and see what plays out in the parliament as regards to this law, and then we can make a better pronouncement.
00:43But we will be there to enforce the law that is passed by parliament.
