Moliy stopped by the Genius office to break down her viral hit, “Shake It To The Max (FLY).” Produced by Silent Addy and Disco Neil, the track blew up after Moliy shared a snippet and dance late last year, which also sparked a wave of remixes. On today’s episode of Verified, the Ghanaian artist dives into how the breakout hit came together, taking shots at her ex, embracing self-love, and more.

00:00I think it's been two things for me.
00:02Me seeing how people react to it, the best two ways have been seeing how they react to
00:05the dance.
00:06It's really goofy and it's really fun and playful and I think that made me really excited.
00:11Because I'm not much of a dancer, so I'm glad I was able to make something that was
00:14danceable and make people still want to follow suit and join in.
00:18And then secondly was the way lots of people are creating their own versions to it.
00:23I think that was also phenomenal as well, because then it's like there are two ways
00:26that people are relating to this song.
00:28It's not just like the viral aspect or the viral dance, it's also just like the coolness
00:33of the song that makes them want to make their own versions.
00:35I think it's just been really wonderful seeing all of that.
00:45So the day I created this song, I had just arrived in Miami.
00:49I linked up with Disco Neil and we were in the studio together.
00:54I was telling him how, you know, I'm working on this project and this project is filled
00:58with lots of high energy.
01:00I played him on a couple of things.
01:01I'm like, this is the energy I'm feeling.
01:02And he's like, you know what?
01:03There's something I think you might want to hear.
01:05And then he played it for me.
01:06I'm just like, you know what?
01:07You're right.
01:08I do really like this.
01:10And I just went in.
01:11My writing process is very secluded, like I like to just be in my own space.
01:15He was there.
01:16He was like, are you good?
01:17You sure?
01:18You need anything?
01:19And I'm like, yeah, uh-huh.
01:20And I'm just writing.
01:21I remember telling myself in the moment, you know, don't overthink it.
01:25This feels like a really fun vibe.
01:26So the lyrics don't need to be too serious.
01:29Just play around with it.
01:30You know, it just came out to be this really fun baddie bop.
01:42I think for the first two lines, I want to fly, hands in the sky, I could just imagine
01:46like people like at a rave or like a very packed space, just having a good time, like yeah.
01:50Like that's what I really wasn't envisioning.
01:53I also feel like a lot of the time I like to put things in my song that just feel like
01:58motivating.
01:59So I want to fly, it feels very general, but at the same time it could mean like I want
02:03to succeed, like I want to like just travel the world, I want to do great things.
02:07So that's always something I kind of want to put into my music.
02:16Like Joe means dance in I think Yoruba, it's a Nigerian language.
02:23In terms of like, no, I want to make it drop, drop, drop.
02:26At that point I'm just like, where the baddies at?
02:27Let's go.
02:28I'm kind of setting the scene as to how I want people to like move to this.
02:46I'm a big fan of music and sometimes I hear things and it's like, it may sound super simple,
02:58but it carries a lot of weight.
03:00So when you hear Rihanna like, Mr. DJ, turn on the replay, something like that sticks with
03:05me and it's like, it becomes this historic moment.
03:07And I'm just like, how can I make something like this, like my own, like, because I'm picking
03:11up on this, it's like a lesson of how to create, you know, music and write impactful lyrics.
03:16I'm instructing you and I'm telling you how I want you to dance and how I want you to move.
03:20And it's so funny because I've been posting content with lyrics for so long, but it seems
03:24like it's now that people are actually deeping the lyrics.
03:27And I remember one comment, someone was like, oh my God, this is a twerk song?
03:31I was just like, I guess you could say some part of it is.
03:35Yeah.
03:41You know, I know what I got on, I know I look good.
03:49I know I'm showing up.
03:50I think it's super important, especially with like my body type.
03:54I'm super particular with, you know, how I show up and how I present myself and what
03:58I wear and exuding confidence.
04:00I know what looks good on me and I love to show it off.
04:03I love to represent for women that look like me.
04:05I'm also representing the little me, obviously it's just a little version of me right now and
04:10maybe was not that confident, you know, and now little girls all over can see me, looking
04:14like me and be like, oh, she looks like this and she can be here in this space.
04:17And I'm like, yeah, so can you.
04:29That's just me saying like, I know who I am.
04:31I know my worth.
04:32Your opinion of me is not really going to change that.
04:35I've been in situations where maybe like a guy would make you feel like if you don't
04:39look a certain way, maybe you're getting weight.
04:41Women gain relationship weight, first of all.
04:43It just means you're kind of happy in the moment.
04:45But like imagine being with a guy that makes you feel like bad because of it.
04:49I'm just like, no, you got to go and I'm still going to eat my good food.
04:52And I still look good.
04:53And I'm still a baddie.
04:54Like just affirming that to myself.
05:02I don't know.
05:03Women tend to go back to kind of situations that don't serve them.
05:07Just based on being their feminine, like loving self.
05:11And I just think, you know, maybe at that moment you can just pour that love into yourself.
05:15You know, do something you're passionate about and just stay true.
05:18And I think that self-love part is so important.
05:21By all means, if you do that, you're going to level up in some way or some form.
05:25And when you're there, like, I don't think those old people or whatever it may be in your case,
05:31can really come back because the attraction isn't there anymore.
05:34You're just at a different point, you know.
05:41Jalof is like this amazing West African Ghanaian dish.
05:45I like it a lot.
05:46Yeah, that was like a straight shot to my ex because I love food.
05:49You know, I love food so much.
05:51I think that line is just super personal to me in a sense where it comes off as playful,
05:56but no, it's really not.
05:57It comes from a dark place.
05:59And it's just manifested into so much joy for who I am and being myself regardless.
06:06I think we have four official remixes.
06:09The first one was Skitty Bang and Shensia.
06:11Shout out to them.
06:12And shout out to Silent Addy for getting them on it.
06:14Second, Kalash and Maureen, French Martinique remix.
06:18And then we have Gladys.
06:19Gladys, I think, has been the coolest one to see because it wouldn't have really come about
06:24if she hadn't done a freestyle to it, like on TikTok.
06:27She just did a freestyle to it on her TikTok and it went crazy.
06:30And I saw her consistently using that freestyle sound up to the point where she had two million
06:35creations under it.
06:36And I'm just like, there's no way we're not actually putting this out.
06:39And we went to Trinidad and we met her and she's amazing.
06:42This gorgeous, fun, free-spirited girl.
06:44And that one just dropped the Done With Your X remix.
06:47I'm really excited about it.
06:48So yeah.
06:49Major Lazer.
06:50Yeah, that's number four.
