00:00The star columnist and cookbook author Datan Kalsam-Taib has once again won an award at the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards 2024 held in Lisbon.

00:11The 82-year-old emerged victorious in the Food Heritage Books category for culinary memoir, My Malaysian Food Journey.

00:19She shared the award with another winner, Maria-Manuel Valagao, for her book entitled Food Heritage of Portugal.

00:26The Gourmand World Cookbook Awards is often described as the Oscars for cookbooks.

00:32This is not a recipe book. Actually, it is stories about food, about dishes that I have been writing.

00:43And I believe that food has a culture, it has history, it has stories, it has memories, feelings and emotions.

00:55I would like to leave behind, not only for general present generation, but also future generations,

01:04because they must know what are the stories behind each dish that we have in Malaysia.

01:13Thank you for this honor.

01:16Kalsam dedicated her win to her native country Malaysia, saying that her stories in the book explore her memories of her childhood,

01:24teenage years and adulthood, binding her to Malaysians of all walks of life.

01:29Kalsam's journey to publishing the book began in 2023, when she started writing a fortnightly column in The Star called Culinary Inspirations,

01:38which has since June this year become a monthly column.

01:41Last year, she compiled 24 of those heartwarming columns into the book.

01:46In the past, she has won various awards at the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards,

01:52including Best Book of the Year, Best Easy Recipes Book, and Best Culinary Heritage.
