00:00This is the E sound.
00:03Keep watching to find out how it's pronounced in British English.
00:10Hi everybody and welcome back to Lean English.
00:17I'm Ed and I'm here to help you achieve your pronunciation goals.

00:28British English pronunciation lessons in the future.
00:31Now, let's look at the E sound in a bit more detail.
00:38To produce the E sound, we want to reduce the space in the mouth as much as possible without
00:45blocking or obstructing the flow of air in any way.
00:49We usually do this when we smile.
00:52So first, simply smile strongly.
00:57Now, do it again, but this time produce a long sound with your voice.
01:04Eee, Eee.
01:08Well done.
01:09You just produced the E sound.
01:13This sound is produced with the lips smiling.
01:16And when we do this, the front of the tongue naturally rises.
01:20This gives the sound its technical name, the close front, unrounded vowel.
01:27Obviously, in real conversation, we don't smile first.
01:31But you can use this trick to find the correct mouth position.
01:34So try and remember the mouth position and produce the sound again.
01:41Eee, Eee.
01:45Now, look at these words.
01:46Can you identify the Eee sound?
01:52Listen and see if you can hear it.
01:55Cheese, leave, recent, bread, achieve, receipt, machine, happy.
02:14The Eee sound is usually spelt with combinations of the letter E.
02:19But be careful, because these letters may produce different sounds in other words, such as bread.
02:26It can also be spelt with the letter I, in words like machine.
02:32And it can be spelt with the letter Y, at the end of words such as happy.
02:39Where the Eee sound exists in unstressed final position, it's usually shortened, but the quality remains the same.
02:48For example, busy, funny, heavy, ugly.
02:59This also occurs in function words which contain the Eee sound.
03:05For example, he, he got lost.
03:11She, she can't remember.
03:16We, we don't know.
03:21When the Eee sound is shortened in function words like this, it's known as the weak form and it helps us to stress sentences correctly.
03:33Now, let's practice.
03:35Listen and repeat after me.
03:38He agreed to keep it secret.
03:46She received a free magazine.
03:54Between fifteen and twenty degrees.
04:01The thief deceived the chief of police.
04:09The leader of the team is extremely pleased.
04:17When a word ends in the E sound and the next word starts with a vowel, we insert the J sound.
04:25For example, three, three apples.
04:31Sea, sea air.
04:36Ski, ski instructor.
04:41This is known as intrusion and it's a way of linking words together in connected speech.
04:48I recommend you watch my previous video on intrusion for more information about this process.
04:55Well, that's the end of the lesson.
04:58But can you think of any more words that contain the E sound?
05:02Let me know in the comments below.
05:04And remember to like and subscribe for more videos in the future.
05:09Thanks for watching.
