00:00This is the uh sound, as in the words but, up, and one.
00:12It's a vowel sound and its technical name is the open, mid, back, unrounded vowel.
00:20Remember that the key to pronunciation is physical and the name tells us about how the
00:26sound is made physically.
00:28In this case your tongue is low and between the middle and the back of your mouth.
00:35All vowels are made through the mouth and are voiced so you need to vibrate your vocal
00:39chords to make the sound.
00:42To produce the sound put your tongue low and between the middle and the back of your mouth
00:49then make a short voiced sound with your mouth open.
00:53The uh sound is often spelled with the letter o, as in the words some and company, but it's
01:10also often spelled with the letter u or ou, as in the words much and country.
01:21Like with all vowels in English the spelling can be very inconsistent and you'll always
01:26find alternative and unusual spellings of the vowel sounds.
01:30It's one of the most difficult things in English but you just have to learn it.
01:36Here are some words that start with the uh sound.
01:40other, under, until, and understand.
01:51Here are some words that have the uh sound in the middle.
02:01another, come, such, and become.
02:18There are no words that end with the uh sound.
02:22But many words end with the similar sound u.
