USC Trojans Running Back Bryan Jackson Discusses Being Halfway Through Training Camp
Transcript
00:00It's about halfway through spring crawl. How's it gone so far?
00:03Oh, it's been good. It's been good. A lot of competition going around.
00:06Guys having fun. Got a lot of energy coming onto the practice field.
00:09So it's been good. It's been real fun so far.
00:11What's the running back group that makes you feel a little different?
00:14Yeah, it's competition. It's competition.
00:16Every guy coming out of the practice day, they're competing, going as hard as they can.
00:20And we're just loving each other through the way.
00:22Criticizing what we think we need to criticize.
00:25Whether a guy do something wrong, a guy do something right.
00:27Congratulate them when they do right, but also give them constructive criticism when they do something not right.
00:31How do the personalities mesh with the new guys coming in and getting along?
00:36We all got similar traits outside the field.
00:41We crack some jokes in the running back room sometimes.
00:46But it's a great feeling having those guys around.
00:48We all have fun. We all enjoy coming out to the field, having fun with each other,
00:52and building a bond that's going to last forever.
00:55What was your biggest takeaway, I guess, from your freshman year that could help you the most
00:59going into this really beneficial season in general?
01:04I'll say something that I need to improve on.
01:06Maybe just being a better vocal leader for our team.
01:10Like stepping up or seeing if a guy down, lifting them up.
01:14Or if we got to get too high, just keeping them steady so we won't get too high, get too low.
01:20Just stand steady and play the play ahead of us.
01:24The offensive line is a little different too.
01:26How have they looked to you so far?
01:27They look good.
01:28They look good.
01:29We've been having some big runs.
01:31So they're getting the job done for us up front for sure.
01:34Do you have to have kind of chemistry with those guys?
01:36Absolutely.
01:37Absolutely.
01:38You got to have chemistry with the whole line.
01:39That's the number one rule as a running back.
01:41Yes, sir.
01:42Yes, sir.
01:43How many new faces impressed you?
01:44Do you guys know a lot?
01:46Really, everybody's really impressed me.
01:47Like the size of the freshmen.
01:49Like these dudes tall.
01:50Like some of them look like seniors.
01:52So really, everybody's really impressed me.
01:54Like the size and how mature they are as young players.
01:58It's really surprising to me.
01:59It was cool.
02:00The defensive side.
02:01Any opportunity to try to tackle them breaking you down?
02:04Everybody.
02:05Everybody.
02:06Everybody's surprised.
02:07Well, not surprised.
02:08I expect that from those dudes.
02:09But they play some hard football for sure.
02:11Specifically, Desmond Stevens is a guy that you're running back.
02:14He's going to be a stud.
02:19That's all I got.
02:20He's going to be a stud.
02:21Let's see.
02:22He's going to be a stud.
02:24What about with that?
02:25Stud.
02:26Stud one, stud two.
02:28One A, one B.
02:29It doesn't matter.
02:30They both studs.
02:31Both going to be great players.
02:32For our team, for sure.
02:33With Jay kind of getting the offseason as a sergeant,
02:37what have you seen from you?
02:38Do you know anything I can do outside of this kind of progress?
02:42Like I said earlier, becoming a better vocal leader for our team.
02:45He's really stepped up into that role.
02:47And being a leader for his team, getting his guys going,
02:50whenever we look down.
02:51He's really just maturing as a quarterback and a guy off the field.
02:55Just growing into an older guy on the team.
02:58Stepping up when guys need it most.
03:01He's just really just all around just a great dude.
03:04How much block have you guys been working on?
03:07Like pass protection?
03:08A lot.
03:09A lot of pass protection.
03:10We do that a lot with the running backs and linebackers one-on-one.
03:13So we have a lot of work in on that, for sure.
03:15How's it going?
03:16It's good.
03:17It's good.
03:18Both sides are doing great work.
03:19Linebackers, running backs, we compete against each other.
03:20We love to do it.
03:21We laugh all the time when we do one-on-ones.
03:23And even routes too.
03:24Routes and pass blocking, we always have fun to compete against the guys.
03:27Do Coach Jones keep you anything this offseason or spring?
03:31What kind of goals to?
03:32I think it's been really good.
03:34Everything can be really high.
03:35Really just settle in and not taking any moment for granted.
03:38Like always stepping one foot in front of the other.
03:41And just be ready for what's in front of you.
03:44Nothing really too serious.
03:45Let's go, Mark.
03:46How do you start as the body goes?
03:47Is it kind of the weight you want to be?
03:49Or is it working on anything this offseason?
03:51Did you get to any goals that you had for that?
03:54Yeah, I have some goals.
03:56But I'm going to just keep that between me and my coaching staff and Coach Wiley.
04:00But yeah, I lost a few pounds for sure.
04:02I needed to, for sure.
04:04Thanks.
04:05I was going to take a minute.
04:06I'm going to take a minute.
04:08I just need to hang out.
04:10I need to hang out.
04:11It's one time for me, my life.
04:12I've been working at the beginning.
04:13I'm going to do that.
04:14I need to hang out with my coaching staff and my coaching staff.
