00:00Los Angeles anchor and reporter Alex Michelson. He has right now going on live a exclusive interview,
00:05sit-down interview with the mayor of Los Angeles, Karen Bass, especially in the wake of so many of
00:12the anti-ice demonstrations that descended on City Hall and downtown LA last week. That was a key
00:19focal point of all of our coverage here on Live Now all last week. And then, of course, the Middle
00:24East got in the way of that last week. But in the meantime, Alex sitting down live with Mayor Bass.
00:30Remember, Mayor Bass has maintained all along that the protests, the demonstrations, some that turned
00:36violent, would all stop if ICE stopped their raids in the city. So I want to start this interview from
00:43the very beginning. Let's watch.
00:48Karen Bass, I think this is your first time in studio live on our six o'clock show, so it's great to have
00:54you here. Thank you. Glad to be here. All right. So what do you know about what happened at Dodger
00:58Stadium? Well, you know what, Alex? This is the problem. We don't know. Officers are just showing
01:03up. We don't even know what type of officers they are. They're masked, as you saw. They don't present
01:08their ID. It said Border Patrol. Are they Border Patrol? Are they ICE? Are they Federal Protective
01:13Services? It is a sense of confusion and chaos. Our police department, our police chief, had no
01:21knowledge of this. So is there something that can be done to ensure that people have to present
01:27IDs or badges if somebody is arresting somebody? Well, you know what, that is supposed to be what
01:33happens, but we're in a situation where people are not exactly following the rules, are following
01:38what had been normal protocols. Right. So, and is that also the protocol for the LAPD? Yes,
01:45the LAPD absolutely has to show you their ID. And so you can just imagine the confusion that presents
01:51and also the bad position that puts our police department in because they're called out to
01:55defend the situation and they're not even sure what's going on. Why were they there? Were they
01:59staging because they were getting ready to do raids? Were they there because they wanted to do
02:03processing? They didn't even notify the Dodgers. They just showed up. So we know that during the fires,
02:10you were public about the fact that you had a good working relationship with Susie Wiles, who was the
02:14White House chief of staff. Are you talking to her about any of this? Well, actually, in the beginning,
02:19I did. But recently, I haven't been. I also know that she's been very focused on the foreign policy
02:24right now. But yes, I mean, if you think about the fires, and you heard me say a number of times,
02:29and it's a controversial thing to say in Los Angeles, but give credit where credit's due.
02:34The administration was very supportive in terms of in the Palisades, which is the only area that
02:38I'm focused on in terms of getting us a tremendous number of Army Corps of Engineers so that we can
02:45get the debris cleared. Now, we're in this situation that is completely perplexing to me. Why are we
02:51here? So, I mean, have you talked to Stephen Miller? No, I've never spoken to Stephen Miller. So if you
02:56call the White House, do they call you back? I put in a formal request to speak to the president. I've not
03:01spoken to them yet. But really, this has created a sense of fear and terror in our city. And it's
03:07having such an incredible toll. It's having a toll on the economy. It's having a political toll in terms
03:13of creating confusion. And it's having a real personal toll in terms of families. Well, let's
03:18talk about the economy, because you visited some of these businesses downtown. And I know some of them
03:23told you that the situation's worse than COVID, because essentially, they got a situation where
03:29their employees are afraid to come to work. That's right. And some of their customers are afraid to come
03:34as well. And people are afraid to come to downtown at all because they think there's going to be chaos.
03:38That's right. But we need to be very clear. There has not been chaos downtown for several days. And the
03:44last time there were arrests, it was on Sunday. There have been nothing happening. It was the business
03:49community that appealed to the city hall to say, please give us a curfew. We did it. And the minute the rest
03:55went away, we lifted the curfew. And hopefully that will help the traffic downtown. Let's talk
04:00about the curfew in a second. But just in terms of the business impact on Los Angeles, because I
04:05know we already had a budget challenge in terms of money going into this. What are you seeing and
04:10what are you doing about that? Well, let me just give you an example. The Garment District,
04:154,000 independent businesses. It's a ghost town. I was in Mariachi Plaza on Father's Day. I visited
04:22restaurants. No one was there. You know, there should have been lines out in front. And so we
04:27have to make sure that people know their rights. But the bottom line is, is that the chaos that has
04:33been created by the administration, we were fine before the raids. Once the raids started, that's
04:39when chaos started. And it seems to be unprovoked. I don't know what led to them focusing on us,
04:45but I do feel like we're a part of an experiment. What happens when the federal government rolls up in a
04:49state and decides to take power away from the governor? That's exactly what has happened here.
04:54So in terms of the curfew, hindsight 2020, do you wish that it started sooner? No, I think it started
04:59when it should have. It started always in collaboration with the business community.
05:03We certainly didn't want to do it too soon because, again, we're worried about business.
05:08And business, it's not like it was booming in downtown to begin with.
05:11On Monday night, I was broadcasting live and there was this video that sort of went viral.
05:18President Trump even talked about it. And it was an image of a guy hammering the sidewalk. Here's
05:24some of those images right here. The police was right down the street watching a lot of this
05:31and nothing was being done. Well, let me just tell you that the images that have been presented,
05:36especially that President Trump has focused on, is creating a sense of absolute chaos in Los Angeles.
05:43And you know that this whole incident was in about four blocks. And so even if you look at the
05:48businesses outside of the protest zone... Yeah, I agree. And I've made that point publicly as well.
05:55And this is like 99% of the city did not have problems. But let's talk about that 1% because
06:00they're really feeling this. So when you see images like this of people burning down cars and
06:05hammering the street and all of that, should the LAPD have done more in real time to stop it?
06:11Well, you know, first of all, you know that I have absolutely no tolerance for this. I don't
06:16think this has a thing to do with fighting for the immigrant community in our city. And I think
06:21people have to be held accountable. And whether they were arrested on that night doesn't mean that
06:26they're not going to be held accountable because there's tons of videotape. And as you probably have
06:30seen, people have been arrested days later. So this is unacceptable. The graffiti, the vandalism,
06:36absolutely unacceptable. And we're going to hold people accountable.
06:39Because some people have come forward and suggested that you had issued a stand-down order to the LAPD.
06:46Well, let me just tell you, the Los Angeles Police Department knows how to do law enforcement.
06:52I'm the mayor. Why would I ever do anything like that? That absolutely, positively never happened.
06:59So are there lessons learned from what did happen in those early days?
07:03Yes.
07:04If there are more protests, what have you learned to maybe do differently in the future?
07:07Well, let me just say that I think in terms of the community that comes out to protest,
07:1299.9% of them are there peacefully. And so I was actually in discussion with a number of people
07:18today. How do we work with our activist community to get them to understand what it means when you
07:24have federalized National Guard? So if you decide to engage with them, if you decide to throw a bottle
07:30at them, people need to understand that that's going to be a felony. It's not going to be a lightweight
07:35charge. And so I think on the activist side, making sure that the real activists who are concerned about
07:41immigrant rights are separated from those that are there to make trouble. And frankly,
07:45those people are there regardless. Those people are there after the World Series, after a Laker game.
07:51Yeah, for years.
07:52We know that we see that.
07:52We saw them there in Occupy LA.
07:54We've seen them in so many different things. It's oftentimes the same people.
07:57So is there more that can be done to get them locked up so that they're not out there doing this time and
08:03time again?
08:03Well, and you know what? I mean, and I think that LAPD does what they can. But can I tell you something,
08:08though, that we need to think about? We need to think about the National Guard that has federalized.
08:12We need to think about the Marines. You know, those are young women and men who are on this
08:17deployment, brought away from their homes, their families, their education. And to me,
08:23it's like using them as props. Take them away from their school, take them away from their employment
08:29to do this deployment that is not needed is not only cruel, but it's impacting their families, too.
08:36I think on Father's Day, the children that were waiting for their fathers to come home,
08:40that they have missing fathers because they were detained, the people who were here legally
08:45that showed up for their immigration appointment that's required every year, and they get detained,
08:51this chaos needs to stop. And it can only stop out of the White House.
08:55All right. Mayor Karen Bass and our colleague at Fox 11, Alex Michelson, there with an exclusive
09:00interview. But we have to step out of that. We're going to try this again. This is happening live.
09:04Former President Joe Biden, addressing the congregation in Galveston on this Juneteenth.
09:09Let's listen.
09:13I had a plan on saying this to be talked about earlier. I spent a lot of time in any of these
09:17churches. That's right.
09:19No, I mean this is serious. When I moved to Pennsylvania as a kid, when Colt died and school,
09:26everything scribbled up. We were down in Delaware. And I got deeply involved in the civil rights
09:32community. And one of the things that occurred, moving to Delaware, my hometown, is the only
09:37town in the history of America since the Civil War, occupied by the military for 10 months,
09:43been drawn bayonets in every corner. And Dr. King was killed. He was signalinging for the
09:48city to be burned down. I quit my job as a lawyer in a fancy call firm. Became a public defender.
09:57They were all from my friends. I grew up on the east side of New England, in the African-American
10:01community. They were being very, very bad in a tree. I became a public defender. One of the
10:07things that I started doing, I'd go, I happened to be a practicing Catholic, and I'd go to 7 o'clock
10:14Mass in St. Joseph's on Brandywine, and then 10 o'clock, 10 o'clock services at A&E Church.
10:20By the way, Bishop Beeman, who now is heading out to the bishop's council, has told the bishop
10:32he knows the relationship. And look, my whole beating, particularly as a high school and college
10:40student, was formed by the black community. I come from an area where we're the third largest
10:47percent of African-Americans in many states and unions in Delaware. Delaware is a strange
10:52state. Delaware is the first state, but it is also a state that was a slave state, our
10:57great shame. But it fought on the side of the North, and it couldn't get to the South, like
11:02Maryland and two other states. And so even when the, when we did Juneteenth, it didn't affect
11:10people in Delaware, because they weren't, they weren't from the Confederacy. It wasn't until
11:17the Emancipation Proclamation had occurred. What I'm trying to say is that I, I just learned
11:25to watch in the community. And that's why I worked on the East Side, that's why I worked
11:29as a lawyer, and that's why I got involved in public life. Mayor Brown, we talked a little
11:35earlier, and I want to thank you for the beautiful gift. I really mean it to sue him. And, uh,
11:41the Galveston City Council, I want to thank him as well. It's an honor to be here in a city
11:46where freedom rang out 160 years ago, 160 years ago. I often say, imagine what would have
11:54happened to the African-American community without the black church. Just imagine what would happen
12:03happen. It has been heart, soul, the community. Folks, you know, I want to acknowledge
12:13Congresswoman Eric Greenparter. Eric Greenparter for her mom, uh, we lost last year. She
12:20was a good friend I served with. I want to thank you as well. I know we can't be here. We hope
12:26the sports family might be here, but the term painting a purpose. And they have. They have.
12:32And folks, look, Juneteenth is a day of liberation, a day of remembrance, and a day of celebration. The
12:42Book of Psalms tells us, weeping may endure for the night, but joy comes in the morning. And Juneteenth
12:53represents both the long and hard night of slavery and subjugation and, and the promise of joyful
13:02morning to come. You know, this sacred day reminds me of another sacred day. That wonderful day
13:09four years ago, four years ago in the East Room of the White House. And I had a great honor for some
13:14objective for some of making Juneteenth a federal holiday. Not since, not since Dr. Martin McKee,
13:26Junior Day, the first holiday since then. Ms. Hope will believe he's there. He's there. Grandmother of Juneteenth.
13:33Noble and determined that all Americans should know the power of this day. And I was very proud
13:40to do that. I'm very proud to do that. Because look, black history is American history. I really think sometimes
13:54even the community underestimates it. Now look, for nearly a decade, we're nearly a decade, well,
14:01I won't do that. But look, let's not forget when Juneteenth was passed as law, okay? Huh? It was passed,
14:17right? What? This is the first year, it was introduced legislation.
14:23Year after year by Sheila Jackson.
14:27And I'll tell you that.
14:29If the bill finally passed, it passed a strong five powers of support. Five powers of support.
14:35General President, President Kennedy, gave all numbers to memorialize this profound moment in American history.
14:41numbers memorialize this profound moment in american history i'll tell you it made me proud
14:49proud that we were united proud that despite all our differences we could still come together
14:56on things that mattered most and this matters as much as anything in american history
15:03because our federal holidays say a lot about who we are as americans
15:07that's right what we celebrate says what we value and now we have a national holiday
15:14dedicated to the emancipation black enslaved people i've been i used to chair the african
15:21fair subcommittee i've been through all of africa i used to be there for a long long time
15:28africa africa i've been to the origins of where slavery started and to listen to them talk about
15:37how things have changed we have to remember our country is founded on the promise of freedom
15:45freedom for everybody
15:50so the events of juneteenth are of monumental importance to the american story and yes
15:57for 156 years all too often the story of what happened here is not written in our textbooks
16:09not in our classrooms our children children were not exposed to it and still today
16:18some say to me and to you that this doesn't deserve to be a federal holiday
16:26they don't want to remember but we all remember the moral stain the moral stain of slavery
16:35i've often called it america's original sin
16:37oh it was america's original sin god forbid well i took the view as president we need to be honest
16:46about our history especially if we're trying to erase our history not just here but this guy
17:04too many people trying to erase our history especially the face of ongoing efforts to erase history
17:12from our textbooks and our classrooms i played a role in changing names of all the military camps that have
17:19slave names
17:22what are we doing now restating those days
17:27folks
17:29darkness can hide much but can erase nothing
17:33and only the truth can come justice and healing
17:42folks i don't come here today to only commemorate the past
17:47i come here because we know the good lord isn't done on us yet
17:57we have more work to do
17:58scriptures tell us faith without works is dead
18:03faith without works is dead
18:06so it's not enough to keep the faith
18:10we have work to do
18:12we need to keep pushing america forward
18:16we need to make real the promise of liberty and equality
18:20and justice for all
18:21we've led the world and now we're sagging
18:27in america
