00:00Interessante isso, porque Callum
00:01é só ter o pão de seats
00:03no esse. Ele poderia ter algo
00:05de ele. Vamos ver o que acontece, então. É o terceiro
00:07de semana de semana aqui. A Croft, place
00:09your bets, everyone. Off they go.
00:11Even start for the front row,
00:13slightly better for Steve Laidlaw,
00:15maybe, e ele vai tentar draw level
00:17com Adam Shepard, eles vão para Clermont
00:18para o primeiro time. Ele tem o seu
00:20noção ahead. Shepard surely não vai
00:21ter ele. Ele não tem o choice. Laidlaw
00:23breezes pass. Adam Shepard
00:26e toma o lead cleanly
00:27em turn 1. That was the kind of Steve
00:30Laidlaw star we've been teeing up all weekend
00:32and he picked the perfect moment
00:34to execute it. Now, can
00:36he stay there? That's the question.
00:38Shepard will definitely want to
00:40try and strike back as soon as he can,
00:42but I don't think he's close enough into Tower.
00:43No, I don't think he is. And Newsham is on the move.
00:46He's showing his nose already and then
00:47Sam Laidlaw is in there as well. But
00:49what a star. That boy
00:51is fired up. Steve Laidlaw
00:53absolutely pinned it. And that
00:56is going to be very interesting
00:58as we go out through the race because I'm not
00:59too sure if Steve can carry
01:01that hobbled car all the way through this
01:03race and win this race. And we don't really
01:05know what his race pace is like because he hasn't
01:07had two clean races. Both of the races
01:09this weekend he's had dramas. That was almost a
01:11drama for Shepard there. Sideways
01:13at sunny. Will Beach running wide and opening
01:15the door for Finn Leslie further back.
01:17And there a battle at the back of
01:19the field as well. Alex Jones and Mark Smith. I think that
01:21was battling together but it's nose to tail for the leaders.
01:23These are the top four in the championship
01:25and they're inseparable through the complex.
01:27Steve Laidlaw trying to defend the lead. Shepard
01:29having to go defensive against
01:31Callum Newsham. This has got
01:33drama written all over it, hasn't it? Laidlaw
01:35I don't think has the ultimate pace in that car
01:37but he ain't going to move out of the way for Adam Shepard.
01:39That we can guarantee. Absolutely not.
01:41This is going to be absolutely fantastic.
01:43Look at Sam Laidlaw. He's already
01:45looking at Callum Newsham. So when they
01:47come into shot the next two cars. Bang bang.
01:49That was
01:50as I said bang bang. Someone smashed down the
01:53poster. But this has got drama
01:55written all over it. Like you say. How hobbled
01:57is Laidlaw's car? How much
01:59does Shepard want this win?
02:01And how much would Steve Laidlaw
02:03defend if he needed to?
02:05Well he might have to defend down at the end of the back straight.
02:07I think it's a tower. Is there a move from Shepard?
02:09No. Shepard will have to be a little
02:11bit careful here. What he can't afford is another
02:13penalty. Of course that disqualification
02:15earlier on put 12
02:17well 4 licence points he was given
02:19and it's 3 championship points
02:21that you lose per licence
02:23point. So 12 points he was docked. He can't
02:25carry that disqualification.
02:26No. Offer's got Laidlaw again and that's a huge hit into the barriers at Barcroft and that is surely game over now for Steve Laidlaw. His car is totaled and that again I'm afraid looked as though it had something to do with Adam Shepard. We didn't catch the start of it. But Steve Laidlaw out of the race and that is the scariest place to go off the road. Paul the fastest part of the track. And yeah you're right that may end up being a race stoppage. It's a safety car immediately. It may be a race stoppage.
02:56It may be a conversation after the race. Oh wow. Well we haven't seen what's happened but I'll tell you what. Well thank goodness Steve Laidlaw is out of that car. He has caught. Look how much. Look at the barrier. That is. That is going to take a long time. That is going to take a long time. I am so glad Laidlaw is out of that car.
03:26You won't be seeing that Shell again race. That is horrific. What happened is the question that we all want an answer to. We only caught the very very end of it. We know Shepard was on the attack but what led to that area Motorsport Cupra heading to the scenery at such velocity. Alex Jones' car has stopped as well. There is a red flag. That's not a huge surprise. Race being stopped whilst they well recover the car but fix that barrier and that will not be a short fix either Paul I'm afraid. That tyre wall is destroyed and the
03:56Anko barrier behind will likely need some attention as well. Oh Jones' car is damaged too isn't it. So I've seen a yellow flag. There was a yellow flag when we were watching the cars come down to tower for the first time so Alex must have clobbered the tyres through there. So there's obviously two sets of different damage. Oh wow. That's been in hard as well. That could have been that could have been the red flag as well then. Well yes I think it probably would have been because Steve was out and was okay but still they might have struggled to
04:26There's too much damage on both sides of the circuit. It's the barriers more than anything. Cars can be moved behind the safety car but when there's a barrier that needs to be repaired that's a different story altogether isn't it? So major drama here at Croft. This is a weekend that is going to go down in history I think isn't it? With the amount of incidents that we've had and the championship connotations that they have. But the main news is we believe both drivers are okay. I haven't seen Alex Jones down there in the chicane but it looks like he's okay.
04:56Right. What replays do we have? That's what we need to see. I believe we've got a couple lined up for you. Let's see. This isn't the Jim Clark S's Paul. What are we seeing? So Jim Clark S's. Steve comes through. No problem there. No problem there. It's a bit later on isn't it? So it's towards Barcroft. So this is it. So does he lose it on his own?
05:19He does. That was nothing to do with Adam Shepard. There is no contact between the two of them. And I'm so happy we got that replay. I'm so happy we got that replay. That's a huge hit into the wall. But that was just over the curb through Barcroft.
05:32Now the back of the car we know has been repaired. The Aerie Motorsport team will have done the best job that they can. It's possible that it wasn't handling quite as it should. He was still on cold tyres as well.
05:42It looked like it was just a slide on cold tyres over the curb. Would you agree?
05:46I would fully agree with that. I mean that corner is completely flat out. The temperature has dropped. Ambient is down.
05:56I've got to say Steve is not somebody who is not someone who's going to back out of going full throttle on the first lap.
06:06You sometimes with Adam Shepard being so close he would have had to keep it pinned through there.
06:11And the car may be reacting differently with the if it's got a little tweak in the rear of it from the crashing race two.
06:18You sometimes can only straighten cars up with so many shims and sometimes it's never quite square and the car can turn left better than it turns right.
06:30I am so glad we got that replay because that is like when you read a newspaper and you see a headline and then you find out from a proper source or somebody who knows someone that it's completely fake news.
06:44And I hate using that term but that just shows you that Adam Shepard has nothing to do with that accident.
06:50And for the integrity of the championship and for racing drivers in general I'm so glad that one that Steve is okay but two that it's not been a fallout of any sort.
07:01Exactly yeah no 100% agree they're picking branches from the tree out of the rear bodywork of that car such was the air that it caught off the barrier.
07:10I mean that could have been a might was a sizable accident of course it could have been even worse but the car doing what it's supposed to do.
07:17This is the latest generation of TCR car of course the Cooper Leon VZ a Gen 3 car and all of the safety improvements that are made.
07:27It's not just performance enhancements that we get from one generation to the next they'll always make sure that the cars are safer and the circuit barriers doing their job as well in absorbing that impact.
07:37The barrier didn't fold either and send the car flying properly into the scenery so that could have been an awful lot worse and yet the main takeaway from all of that is that Steve Laidlaw appears to be fine.
07:48And here's the replay again watch just there as the car hits the curb it unsettles from the rear starts a slide to the right and of course he's steering into it foot flat on the floor and it just goes back round the other way.
08:02Yeah and you can see Adam Shepard's hard on the brakes turning right so the rears lock up but look at this impact bang straight into the tires the dissipation of energy has saved him there and then it's you know that reminds me of Nigel Mansell in I think it was 86 in that Williams Honda in Japan when he lost the rear and it went up off the tires and it just spun round and took the energy out of it.
08:29But that is absolutely horrendous and a horrible thing to say but this is why the drivers actually love this circuit because risk versus reward is huge.
08:41Yeah if that was Silverstone he would have slid harmlessly off into a gravel trap been stuck race would have been over and you know maybe that's for the best but it's that challenge it's that real challenge that places like Croft like Alton Park provide to a driver that a more modern facility perhaps doesn't we hate to see it result in that kind of thing but
08:58it's the fact that you know that can happen that adds to the challenge and the thrill I guess of the place.
09:06So there is Alex Jones' car we haven't really had a chance to touch upon Alex Jones but we haven't seen it happen obviously we don't really know what has happened there but time and time again we've seen cars losing out of the chicane on cold tires.
09:17That's the first time you lean on that right rear tire and in the first few laps very easy to lose control there.
09:23Yeah very easy I mean it's easier to lose control where Alex is in this number seven because you it's quite difficult to take the chicane flat where Alex is in general.
