00:00This Egyptian designer is using industrial waste to make beds for Palestinian refugees.
00:05Ibrahim Abu Ghendi owns the eco-friendly design company Mobikya.
00:09Recently he's been creating what he calls sosteleta beds using washing machine drums
00:13and car tires.
00:15The beds cost $70 plus about another $30 to add a mattress.
00:19But Abu Ghendi has partnered with non-governmental organizations to cover the beds' costs for
00:23families in need, including displaced Palestinians.
00:26Heba Yassin came to Egypt from Gaza.
00:29She says,
00:30When I arrived in Egypt we wanted to get a house and furnish it from zero and as everybody
00:33knows prices are so high and the cost of furniture is very high.
00:37So by chance I saw on social media a page focused on recycling industrial waste and turning it
00:41into furniture.
00:42I honestly liked the idea because the cost will be less and it will look beautiful with
00:46a different and new thing.
00:48Abu Ghendi says he is an architect and ultimately wants to design eco-friendly buildings.
00:52But for now he's doing what he can to address an acute crisis.
00:55In May, Reuters reported that the Palestinian ambassador in Cairo said that as many as 100,000
01:01Gazans had fled to Egypt since the start of the war with Israel in October.
