UN experts said in a report on Tuesday (June 17) that Israel committed the crime against humanity of "extermination" by killing civilians sheltering in schools and religious sites in Gaza, with a clear goal: “the destruction of life in Gaza."

The United Nations Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel was presenting its report to the Geneva-based UN Human Rights Council.

00:00These attacks were part of a widespread and relentless assault against the Palestinian people
00:07in which Israeli forces have committed war crimes, including directing attacks against civilians
00:15and willful killing, and the crime against humanity of extermination.
00:21The goal of the Israeli government is abundantly clear, the destruction of life in Gaza.
00:28For a year and a half now, our Commission has been investigating the violence in Gaza.
00:35We have seen constant escalation and more and more deaths and injuries.
00:41Our findings show that as Israeli security forces killed thousands of children,
00:48they also obliterated the education system in Gaza.
00:52More than 90% of schools and university buildings in Gaza have been damaged or destroyed,
01:00creating conditions where education for children has been made impossible.
01:06With the loss of education, Palestinians are also losing their source of stability,
01:13of hope and of a possibility for the future.
01:16Israeli airstrikes have targeted educational facilities believed to be safe refuge areas,
01:26killing the displaced, including children and women,
01:29and deliberately shelled, burned, and demolished schools and universities.
01:35The Commission could not identify any military necessity which justifies such actions,
01:42and we conclude that these actions show an intent to destroy these facilities
01:48in order to curtail Palestinians' access to education in the long term.
02:05The Commission has been
02:23to meet a lot of people who were able to do this,
02:24and then we will keep up with our students,
02:25and we'll be able to join the military staff in Gaza.
02:27We'll be able to join the military staff in Gaza.
02:29We'll be able to join the military staff in Gaza,
