01:13And let's start right away
01:16Prof. many people might not know this
01:18But you are the reason the world celebrates World Bicycle Day every year
01:23Could you share with us what sparked the idea
01:25What was your personal motivation in championing this course at the United Nations?
01:30Well first of all good morning and thank you for having me here
01:33From a time perspective I believe that was a destiny
01:37Through my life work, my involvement in cycling, competitive cycling
01:44Then obtaining master's degree in physical education
01:47Then my PhD
01:48Then teaching at the elementary school level as a PE teacher
01:52Secondary school as a PE teacher
01:56And then becoming an academic teacher in the United States
02:00Specializing in sociology sport and other aspects of sociology
02:05So I believe at certain point
02:07When I started to work as a consultant for the World Bank and United Nations
02:12This idea was planted by itself
02:16And that's how I developed the process
02:20And I was persistent enough
02:22And I was focused enough to deliver
02:25It wasn't easy
02:26It took me almost three years
02:28But in the end
02:32On April 12, 2018
02:35We were able to see something amazing
02:37Every country of General Assembly voted yes
02:41And we have this wonderful day
02:44Which is hugely and very proudly celebrated all over the world on June 3rd
02:52And then I'm pretty sure lobbying the United Nations can be a long and winding road
02:57What was the toughest objection you had to overcome
03:01And how did you frame your argument to win the support?
03:04Well, whenever you have something obvious
03:07It's very difficult to lobby for or promote for
03:11I believe that the most important thing was to be persistent
03:15To make sure that people understand that this is a political approach
03:20And it's for the good of humanity
03:24And I think I was able to achieve it
03:26I presented patience, respect for everybody
03:29And I was trying to collaborate with every country interested in this endeavor
03:36And I think it was done by international collaboration and support
03:43And Prof, we often hear about electric vehicles and green buildings
03:47But bicycles are rarely part of the mainstream climate conversation
03:51In your view, how can cycling be a powerful contributor to climate action and sustainability
03:57Especially in a dense urban environment?
04:01Well, after I was able to achieve my main goal
04:07The establishment of World Bicycle Day
04:10I decided to go after my second priority
04:14Which was establishing another resolution at the United Nations
04:19Which was integration of bicycling into public transportation
04:24And that was again a very successful attempt
04:28And we have a second resolution
04:31Which is focus on full inclusion
04:34Full integration of active mobility, bicycling into public transportation
04:39Which is a very, very important step stone
04:44In terms of moving forward
04:46And including bicycle into sustainability issues
04:50Into climate struggles, health issues
04:54And other issues related to transportation
04:58Including pollution
04:59And let's be honest
05:00Bicycle was decarbonized at 1817
05:05As soon as it was invented
05:08So we are a very unique group of people
05:11And we should protect this vehicle as much as we can
05:14And beyond its environmental benefits
05:16How does cycling impact communities
05:19Particularly in developing countries
05:21Could you walk us through how bicycle can promote not just health
05:25But also equity, dignity and a better quality of life?
05:29Well, number one, bicycle is associated with
05:33In developing countries is associated with negative stigma
05:37That it is a vehicle for people who are not necessarily well educated and wealthy
05:44Which is absolutely incorrect
05:47In developed countries
05:48People on every possible level or society
05:52Are using bicycles every day
05:54And for all kinds of occasions
05:56So that's number one
05:57In terms of equity
05:58Bicycle is one of the most just elements of transportation we can imagine of
06:07And it greatly serves old people, young people, females, males, poor, rich
06:14And it's blind
06:17And it's very important
06:18We should stick to it
06:20And we should promote as much as possible
06:22And in the regions where public health budgets are thin
06:27How have you seen bicycle programs lower healthcare costs
06:32Say through reduce non-communicable diseases
06:35Or improve mental health?
06:37That's a great question
06:38And I think if the leaders of a country
06:43Especially developing countries
06:44Are great visionaries
06:47They should look into active mobility
06:50As a solution to save money
06:52On health care
06:55And other issues related to insurances and so on
06:59I think well-being of every society
07:02Depends in a way on active mobility
07:05We have to, as human beings, be active
07:07A sedentary style of life is not helping us to stay healthy
07:12And let's talk about Kuala Lumpur here
07:15Or any modern city really
07:16In what practical ways can a city like ours benefit from more inclusive and robust cycling infrastructure?
07:24Number one, save time
07:26You can get from point A to B much faster by bicycle here
07:32Nowadays knowing the traffic issues
07:35And people who are in rush should be using bicycles
07:41And people who want to stay young, healthy and fit
07:46Should have bicycle at hand all the time
07:50And plus this is a great lifesaver for all kinds of occasions
07:55And this is also, which I call, an instrument of human survival
08:02And traffic congestions like you mentioned before
08:05And air pollutions are twin headaches for Kuala Lumpur KL
08:08How would a well-connected bike lane network tangibly ease both within, say, five years perhaps?
08:17I'm actually very optimistic what is happening in Kuala Lumpur nowadays
08:21You have a mayor who is recognizing the need for active mobility
08:25And her presence during the celebration of World Bicycle Day a few days ago
08:30Was a very clear message to everybody
08:33I'm with you and I believe that active mobility is part of our future
08:38And now it's time to start applying certain things
08:43And it's time to get together
08:46I propose to a group of advocates to organize a round table
08:52So everyone can be clearly heard in terms of their need
08:56And their vision and their expectations
08:58And start building and start working on solutions
09:03Which will be good for everybody who is involved here
09:07And I strongly believe that the government, local and federal government
09:12Should be deeply involved in this conversation
09:14Because it can make a huge difference
09:17And rightly so, you mentioned that now the time is now to act on it
09:22But what design principles, per se, segregated lanes
09:26Or bike bus corridors or end-of-trip facilities
09:30Should KL prioritize first if the budget is very tight?
09:34Well, number one, you have to be very smart
09:36Look for opportunities which are easy to approach
09:40So-called low-hanging fruits
09:44Look for something which is already there
09:47And take the best possible advantage of what you have at your disposal
09:53Second thing, try to create your own system
09:57Try to create your own solutions
10:00Do not look on different countries
10:02Because that may lead you to challenges
10:07Which you may not be able to solve at this point
10:10And by doing so
10:12You will develop your own ways of dealing with
10:18Implementation of active mobility into your society
10:21Based on your culture
10:24Based on your tradition
10:26Based on your standards
10:27And obviously political arena
10:30Which is always very important
10:32And in KL here we have public transportation
10:35But the problem here is the first-mile, last-mile connectivity
10:38And also you mentioned just now
10:41That the government needs to work with a lot of agencies
10:43In order for us to put this agenda forward
10:46So how can city planners ensure
10:48That new cycling routes link seamlessly
10:50To a rail and bus hubs
10:52Rather than becoming a fragmented showcase stretches?
10:57That's always a challenge
10:59However, as I mentioned just a few moments ago
11:02There is already a resolution of the United Nations
11:06Which integrates bicycling into public transportation
11:11So we have a blessing from the General Assembly
11:14And we have an indication
11:16What the world is looking at at this point
11:19And I think that should be a great indication
11:23For your government
11:24For your local authorities to follow
11:27Second thing
11:29It's like a systemic work
11:32A dialogue between everyone involved
11:35And you have to understand that
11:37Public transport
11:39And active mobility
11:41Is an issue of several ministers
11:45You have health
11:46You have environment
11:47You have education
11:48You have higher education
11:49You have interior
11:50You have finance
11:51You have urban design
11:53So all those representatives
11:56Should be at the table
11:57Being able to express themselves
12:01And connect
12:03In order to make a final solution
12:06And obviously media
12:07And I'm very grateful to talk to you
12:10About all those issues
12:11Because we are raising awareness
12:14As we speak
12:14And that's very important
12:16To engage as many people as possible
12:19And raise the awareness
12:21And move forward
12:22Also I'm a former PE teacher
12:25That's a great opportunity
12:27For educators to get involved
