Should we be worried about 2025’s spate of plane crashes?

00:00Why have there been so many plane crashes in 2025? Aviation disasters seem to be on

00:05the increase this year, with the tragic Air India flight being the latest in a recent spate of

00:10crashes. So why have there been so many accidents? And is it actually getting more dangerous to fly?

00:16According to the Bureau of Aircraft Accident Archives, there have been a total of 49 aircraft

00:22crashes this year. Most of these accidents have happened in the US, including in Washington DC,

00:26Philadelphia and Alaska. So what caused them? Well, currently there's no official explanation for the

00:33major crashes that resulted in fatalities, but in-depth investigations are underway. However,

00:38it could be over a year before we see the official findings. So is there evidence to suggest that

00:43flying is becoming more dangerous? Apparently not. Experts have reassured that there is no cause for

00:49alarm and say it remains the safest form of travel. The National Safety Council estimates that Americans

00:54have a 1 in 93 chance of dying in a car crash, while deaths on planes are still too rare to calculate

01:00the odds. In fact, the Bureau of Aircraft Accident Archives data suggests we're actually seeing a

01:06decline in air travel deaths per year. And what about climate change? Is it one of the reasons we're

01:11seeing more crashes? According to a National Geographic article, worsening weather is increasingly

01:16affecting flights. The study showed that turbulence caused by stronger winds, a faster jet stream,

01:21and more frequent storms, was making air travel bumpier. It also showed an increase in flooded

01:25runways and rising surface temperatures, making it more difficult for planes to take off.
