Westgate Run: The history of Wakefield's famous pub crawl

Crowds of people used to head to Wakefield's Westgate for the Westgate Run.

00:00You can see Wakefield Westgate is still a busy thoroughfare for trade when it comes to people

00:06coming in and out of the city centre but at one point it was thriving originally with wool trade

00:13and then also full of public houses and inns. From Westgate end into the city centre you could see

00:21up to about 30 pubs which were all part of the Westgate run. Nowadays sadly whilst the Westgate

00:28run does still exist we still have the readout at the bottom and then in the city centre the Black

00:34Swan but at the same time there's not as many pubs and clubs and sadly people have said that

00:41they just couldn't simply afford it even with the fewer pubs and clubs.
