00:00Hagler. He is no stranger to the role of a contender who nobody wanted.
00:04But today, Marvin stands alone. He is the only undisputed champion in the world.
00:09For seven long years, Marvin dreamt of stepping into the ring with a middleweight champion.
00:13Those days are over. Today, marvelous Marvin is the most feared middleweight in the world.
00:18He is the possessor of the WBA and WBC crowns, and the most powerful punching combinations in boxing.
00:24But now a new role. Marvin steps into the ring with his title on the line.
00:28Tonight, the first title defense of marvelous Marvin Hagler.
00:33Live from the Boston Garden in Boston, Massachusetts, HBO Sports presents World Championship Boxing.
00:41First, the scheduled six-round welterweight bout between up-and-coming Davey Moore and Felix Nance.
00:48And then the main event, the scheduled 15-round middleweight championship bout
00:52between the undisputed WBA-WBC middleweight champion of the world, marvelous Marvin Hagler,
00:58and the number one ranked WBA-WBC contender, Fulgencio Obelmajias.
01:04Hello, everybody. I'm Barry Tompkins, and it is a pleasure to share these microphones with the welterweight champion of the world,
01:10Sugar Ray Leonard, and also our expert analyst, Larry Merchant.
01:13Sugar Ray, let me ask you, first of all, it has been 19 years since there's been a championship fight here at Boston Garden Place,
01:19literally sold out all the way up to the rafters up there.
01:22You have been in this kind of situation before. There's a real electricity about a fight like this.
01:27Barry, you can feel the intensity of the fight.
01:28I mean, the crowd, you can pretty much put yourself in its place.
01:32And the way Marvin has conditioned himself in this particular fight, you might see a dynamite fight.
01:37Everybody talks about how hard Marvin Hagler works, that he really puts as much time into training
01:41as he does in the ring during the actual fight itself.
01:44What's going through his mind at this juncture now?
01:46We're still probably a half hour, 45 minutes away from that fight.
01:49What are you thinking about in the locker room at this point?
01:51At this stage now, it's been such a long road for Marvin to, let's say, capture the middleweight crown,
01:57and he wants to retain that.
02:01And after we saw a few clips on the two, it was that who wants to fight a guy like that?
02:07He's awesome, and he's going to prove himself tonight again.
02:10Well, we've got a lot to tell you about both Marvin Hagler and the challenger, Fulhensio Obamajas.
02:14But before we get to that, we have a six-round fight between Davey Moore and Felix Nance.
02:17And with us, Larry Merchant, who has had an opportunity to be around Davey Moore.
02:22Larry, a couple of words about Davey Moore.
02:23Flax, as time goes on.
02:25As we mentioned, still down the road, the middleweight championship fight between Marvin...
02:28With a record of 22 wins, 21 wins and no losses.
02:32Davey Moore was a very outstanding amateur fighter,
02:35but he turned pro recently under completely different circumstances
02:38than our man here, Sugar Ray Leonard, and his graduating class in 1976.
02:44That class had the advantage of the exposure of the Olympics from Montreal.
02:48What that means for Davey Moore is that he, unlike them, isn't a household name.
02:54He isn't a box office draw yet.
02:56He'll have to achieve that the old-fashioned way.
02:59He'll have to earn it as a professional.
03:02We have some film of Davey Moore, and I saw all of these fights, covered them,
03:06and believe me, he fought every minute of every round in just this fashion.
03:13Davey Moore is a 21-year-old native of the Bronx in New York City.
03:17He is also the most exciting young welterweight to come along since Sugar Ray Leonard.
03:21We saw Moore first here on HBO as an amateur fighter for New York in the Red Trucks
03:26in the opening round of our AAU Intercity Boxing Series.
03:29He racked up an impressive 90-6 record with 50 knockouts during his years as an amateur.
03:39Moore next appeared in the semifinals of the tournament.
03:42A third-year business administration student at Manhattan Community College
03:45showed an ability to throw an awful lot of punches in a very short space of time
03:50and promptly disposed of Carl Poole of Philadelphia.
03:55And it was into the finals for Davey Moore,
03:57and he wasted no time in destroying Kelly Pickering of San Francisco.
04:01Under the training of Leon Washington, this 147-pounder
04:05set his sights on an Olympic gold medal in 1980,
04:08only to have his dreams shattered by the Olympic boycott.
04:11Instead, he would have to rest on his laurels in Golden Gloves tournaments.
04:16Here in Golden Gloves competition between New York and Chicago,
04:19Davey easily handled Chicago's Xavier Frazier with workmanlike proficiency.
04:24Today, Moore holds the record of four Golden Gloves championships,
04:28shared only by Howard Davis Jr. and Vince Shomo.
04:31Davey Moore has a message to the boxing world.
04:34He wants to be the welterweight or middleweight champion within the next three years.
04:40So, not much left to do but just to get on to it.
04:43Now, let's go up to the ring for the introduction of the two fighters.
04:45In the blue corner, wearing blue trunks with the white stripes,
05:03wearing 144 and three-quarter pounds,
05:07from Norwich, Connecticut, Felix Nance.
05:10And in the red corner, wearing red trunks with the white stripes,
05:16wearing 147 pounds,
05:19from New York City,
05:21Davey Moore.
05:22Oh, we are just about set to go here with a six-round fight.
05:41Davey Moore and Felix Nance getting their instructions from Dick Bradley.
05:46As you look at the tail of the tape here,
05:48that'll pretty much tell you the story of these two fighters.
05:50Nance, three years, the senior.
05:51Height is very comparable.
05:53Moore comes in,
05:53two and a quarter pounds heavier.
05:55The reach is identical.
05:56The records of the two men,
05:572-0 for Davey Moore,
05:582-0 and a draw for Felix Nance.
06:01So, neither fighter has suffered a loss.
06:04And as Nance in the blue trunks,
06:05he is on the right of your screen right now.
06:07Davey Moore out of the Bronx, New York,
06:08in the red.
06:10Moore, a promising fighter,
06:11has had just two professional fights,
06:13has won them both.
06:14Comes in at 147 pounds.
06:20Moore's showing a quick left jab.
06:25We are just underway here
06:26in the first round of a six-round fight.
06:36Moore is trying to get himself loose, seemingly.
06:41A couple of left hands,
06:43no damage done.
06:44Side of the head.
06:45More, very successful as an amateur.
06:57Ray, you were in this very position,
06:59fighting a guy you don't know a lot about.
07:01You've had just two fights.
07:02There's got to be a case of nerves
07:03going on for him right now.
07:05Well, there's a great deal of nerves,
07:06but once the first punch is thrown,
07:09you're okay.
07:10It's just a feeling all boxers have been.
07:11Felix Nance out of Norwich, Connecticut.
07:22Davey Moore from the Bronx, New York,
07:24here at the Boston Garden.
07:29Might know the full Boston Garden here.
07:32All kinds of history in this place.
07:33Davey Moore would like to get his little
07:35niche of history here at the Boston Garden
07:37on a championship fight card.
07:39A combination by Moore there.
07:44It doesn't really hurt too much.
07:46Back stance up against the ropes.
07:47Comes from left field to the left.
07:51And Nance managed to get himself out of it
07:53without much trouble.
07:54Moore forcing the fight early on.
07:55One minute remaining, round one.
08:00Threw a very nice combination in there.
08:02A right to the body
08:02and a left upside the head.
08:04Again, a pretty quick combination.
08:11Left point of the nose,
08:12right to the side of the head.
08:14I noticed that Moore has very quick hands.
08:16And at this stage now,
08:18he's inexperienced.
08:19And he really doesn't know
08:20how to put his punches together
08:22that well yet.
08:23But as time goes on,
08:24his punches will be far more effective
08:26than they are now.
08:28Again, a pretty good, quick combination.
08:30Slipping inside the gloves
08:31of Felix Nance.
08:32Coming up on 15 seconds.
08:36Remaining in round one.
08:37Six-rounder here.
08:38These are Welderweights.
08:40Ray taking notes.
08:42That's my division.
08:43That's right.
08:50Moore being just a little bit cautious early
08:53as we come to the end of round one.
08:54I imagine that one of the things
08:59a young professional is more mindful of
09:02than anything else
09:03except his opponent
09:04is the distance.
09:07As a three-round fighter,
09:09as an amateur,
09:10he went just right through everybody
09:11like a hurricane.
09:13But here you can see
09:14he's trying to pace himself
09:15a little bit.
09:16He doesn't want to spend
09:16himself completely.
09:18Take your shots when they come.
09:20But he's being a little bit more judicious
09:22about using himself.
09:24That was the same way, Larry.
09:25When I moved from
09:26six to eight
09:28and when this is
09:29Sugar Ray,
09:30you're going to Big Ten.
09:31I was very, very scared.
09:34The thing is here, too,
09:35you're trying to impress,
09:36trying so hard to impress.
09:38And you know that one mistake
09:39and you're all done dancing.
09:40That's true.
09:41You want to reserve your take.
09:43You don't have quite the confidence.
09:46These are not amateurs.
09:47And even though you have to figure
09:49that he's going to beat a guy
09:49like Felix Nance,
09:50nonetheless,
09:51there's nothing to say
09:52that Felix Nance
09:53can't come from left field
09:54with one punch.
09:55And that would seriously
09:56bruise Davey Moore's reputation
09:58because he hasn't really
09:59established one yet.
10:01Second round.
10:02Scheduled six-rounder.
10:04Moore on the left
10:05and the red trunks.
10:05That is Felix Nance
10:06on the right
10:07wearing the blue trunks.
10:13Marvin Hagler.
10:15Lujancy Obamahia
10:16still in the locker room.
10:17Of course.
10:19That fight upcoming
10:20for the middleweight championship.
10:24Moore missing
10:25with that combination.
10:47For not real sharp
10:59with his punches,
11:00although he
11:01obviously shows a lot of promise,
11:03just good quickness
11:04in his jab.
11:07A dangerous habit
11:08that Moore has.
11:09He knows his mouth is open.
11:11That is very dangerous.
11:12You're vulnerable
11:14for a broken jaw
11:15or a busted fist.
11:19Of course,
11:19in the amateurs,
11:20if that mouthpiece
11:21is knocked out,
11:22they stop the fight,
11:23they hand you the mouthpiece,
11:24they say,
11:24let's go now.
11:25But it's a gentleman's behavior
11:27right here.
11:30Well,
11:30Nance holding his own
11:31here against Davey Moore,
11:33the highly touted
11:34right-hander
11:35out of the Bronx.
11:36Both these fighters
11:41seem pretty poised
11:42for fellows
11:43who've had only
11:44a total of five fights
11:45between the two of them.
11:47Moore looks more confident,
11:49whereas that Nance,
11:50he's pretty tight.
11:53And that makes him
11:54a dangerous fighter
11:55because he doesn't
11:56want to get hit,
11:57and he's ready to release
11:58a certain punch
11:59at any moment.
12:00That was a good left hand
12:01by Moore that time,
12:02getting in on the forehead
12:03of Felix Nance.
12:04Fighters right above us
12:05now in the corner.
12:06And Moore taking it
12:07to Nance,
12:07and Nance gets out
12:08of there now.
12:09Moore pushes it right back.
12:10Nance tries to counterpunch
12:11and get away again.
12:13And this time he does,
12:14gets him back
12:14in the middle of the ring.
12:15So Moore with that
12:16left hand,
12:19that was the best punch
12:19of the fight.
12:20Back in the corner now
12:21goes Nance,
12:22and that's a dangerous
12:22place to be.
12:24Against the fighter
12:25like Moore.
12:25Moore throws punches,
12:26he's very quick,
12:28and he's able to deliver
12:29four or five
12:30under the shots.
12:36No one missed
12:38with that round.
12:41Coming up on 15 seconds,
12:43remaining in the second round
12:44here.
12:44Jab snaps Nance head back.
12:46And we have reached
12:58the end of the second round
12:59here.
12:59Davey Moore quite impressive,
13:01getting a couple of good
13:02punches in that time,
13:03and started to add up
13:06the points here
13:07as Davey Moore,
13:07and you can see him
13:08just relax
13:09as time goes on.
13:10As we mentioned,
13:11still down the road,
13:11the middleweight championship
13:12fight between Marv and Hagler,
13:14and this is Hagler's
13:16dressing room here,
13:17and you can see
13:18police out in front.
13:21I guess the champion
13:22just wants to be alone
13:22at this juncture
13:23and just get his slots
13:24together all by himself.
13:25Concentration,
13:27it makes you a performance,
13:29but I prefer to have
13:30that guard in the ring
13:31with me.
13:32That's right.
13:33Man's about 85 years old.
13:34I don't think he can handle it.
13:35I think I can handle it.
13:37I'm a devout coward.
13:38You're looking into the corner
13:43of Davey Moore now.
13:45Moore, just 21 years old,
13:46has had only two professional fights,
13:48this being his third.
13:49A little bit tentative out there,
13:51but you can see him
13:51kind of start to take control
13:53toward the end
13:53of the second round there.
13:54Back Nance into a corner
13:55a couple of times,
13:56came up with a good left jab,
13:57then caught Nance
13:58on the forehead,
14:00stuck in dust a little bit,
14:01but neither man,
14:01by and large,
14:02has been hurt.
14:02We're in the third round here,
14:03a six-round fight.
14:04At the end
14:07of the second round,
14:08Barry,
14:08Nance hit Moore
14:09with his very short
14:11and very powerful right hand.
14:14And Moore,
14:14I mean,
14:15Moore seemed to acknowledge
14:16that also.
14:16I saw the twink in his eyes.
14:19That's a confidence builder
14:20for somebody like Nance.
14:22Yes, I believe it is.
14:23I'm sure he's, you know,
14:23heard about this guy,
14:24Davey Moore, too,
14:25and Davey Moore's been
14:26the guy that's been
14:26getting all the ink,
14:27and now he comes in here,
14:28and all of a sudden
14:28Nance figures,
14:29see, this guy's really
14:30not hurting me at all,
14:30and all of a sudden,
14:31I hit him.
14:32That's true.
14:32Just like when the average
14:33fighter happened to
14:34stepping in with me,
14:35he's a little cautious,
14:36and he's afraid
14:37because of the name
14:38and because of all
14:39the attention,
14:40but if he's able
14:40to land a punch on me,
14:42he gains confidence
14:43as the rounds go by.
14:45There was also
14:46the element of
14:46overconfidence.
14:47Yeah.
14:48That's what I like.
14:53That is Davey Moore
14:54in the red trunks
14:55on the left of your screen.
14:56Felix Nance on the right.
14:58Neither fighter
14:59has lost a fight.
15:00Nance has a draw
15:01in three fights.
15:02Close quarters now.
15:19Right hand up
15:19on top of the head
15:20that time
15:21by Davey Moore.
15:21once again,
15:36getting dance
15:37against the ropes here.
15:38That's where he's done
15:39whatever damage
15:40he has inflicted so far.
15:45Moore makes a mistake.
15:46He comes in,
15:47he throws his punches,
15:48but his chin is straight,
15:49directly in front of him.
15:51And he's,
15:52he's liable to get caught
15:53with a surprise
15:53on the right hand
15:54or left hook even.
15:57You make a good point too
15:58about his fighting
15:59with his mouth open
16:00pretty much.
16:01That really leads you
16:02wide open
16:02to get cut inside the mouth
16:03and that can really
16:04cause all sorts of havoc
16:05I guess
16:06in just trying to breathe.
16:07That's very dangerous.
16:08He's got a bloody lip
16:10or some blood
16:10inside his mouth
16:11right now
16:12even as you were speaking.
16:13So he probably
16:14did get cut inside there.
16:17Looks like it could be
16:18a cut right on the lower lip.
16:20Now that just may be
16:21a bad habit.
16:22Normally when we see
16:23that in a fighter
16:23we start to think
16:24that perhaps he's not
16:25in the best shape
16:26but he just started out
16:27the fight like that.
16:29That's right.
16:29That becomes a habit
16:30in amateurs.
16:35And you have the feeling
16:36here that Felix Nance
16:36is starting to sense
16:37that I might be able
16:38to win this fight.
16:40Well he's building confidence
16:41as he's began to land
16:44certain punches
16:45on more.
16:49Short right hand
16:50just was a little bit
16:51too short that time.
16:53By Felix Nance.
16:55I don't think Davey Moore
16:57has tasted his own blood
16:58too often in the past.
17:00So that's one
17:01sort of baptism
17:02under fire
17:03as a professional.
17:07Here's a look inside
17:08Fulgencio Obelmajias.
17:10He looks rather calm
17:11right now
17:11but you have to know
17:12there's a little bit
17:13of apprehension
17:13going on in his mind.
17:14Oh there has to be.
17:15He's a hero at home
17:16and he knows fully well
17:18if he wins this fight
17:19he could run for president.
17:20If confidence
17:21is any kind of a factor
17:22in the man's winning a fight
17:23he had said long before
17:25he ever even signed
17:26a contract to fight
17:27Marvin Hagler
17:27that if I ever get
17:28Hagler to win
17:29in the ring rather
17:30Venezuela's going to have
17:30a new champion.
17:31Well he looks slim.
17:33Pretty good size.
17:346'1".
17:35We've got a lot to tell
17:35you about this man.
17:36Fulio Bell
17:37is what he has come
17:39to be called
17:39here in the United States.
17:40Fulgencio Obelmajias
17:41unquestionably
17:42quite a mouthful.
17:43I haven't kicked it yet today
17:44but I'm working on it.
17:45You know all of South America
17:46is watching
17:47for this fight.
17:49They had an outstanding
17:51middleweight champion
17:51for many years
17:52and Carlos Monzon
17:53didn't lose a fight
17:54for about 12 years
17:55and maybe they think
17:57that they have another
17:58successor to Monzon here.
18:00We come to the 4th round
18:04of this 6th rounder
18:05between Davey Moore
18:06and Felix Nance.
18:07Nance picking up the pace
18:07just a little bit here
18:08and you really do have
18:09the feeling that Nance
18:10might sense upset.
18:15Crowd rather quiet
18:16just kind of sitting
18:17on its hands right now.
18:17I think it's rather
18:18an anticipatory crowd
18:19thinking about the championship.
18:21One of its own
18:22Marvin Hagler
18:23out of Brockton, Massachusetts.
18:25Very, very popular
18:25here in Boston.
18:26Meanwhile, it is the task
18:29of young Davey Moore
18:30to do a job
18:31on Felix Nance
18:32and so far
18:32he would have to think
18:34that he is the man
18:35who has had the job
18:36being done upon him.
18:38Left hand by Nance
18:40catches Moore
18:40a little bit off balance.
18:45Moore goes to the body.
18:46First time he's done that
18:47had been headhunting
18:48the whole fight.
18:48Pretty good right hand
18:49counterpunch that time
18:50by Nance.
18:50Nance is forcing the fight now.
18:56One minute gone by
19:03here in the fourth round.
19:05Scheduled six-rounder.
19:07Moore still with a little bit
19:08of blood showing
19:09from his lower lip
19:10and as Sugar Ray Leonard
19:11aptly pointed out
19:12it was caused strictly
19:14because he's been fighting
19:15with his mouth open.
19:16What happens also
19:17with the fighter,
19:18a young fighter
19:18coming up in ranks
19:19and when he knows
19:21fully well he's on TV
19:22that has the tendency
19:23to take something away
19:24from him
19:25because he wants
19:26to look good
19:26he wants to look impressive
19:27and sometimes
19:29he forgets exactly
19:30what he's supposed
19:31to do in the rain.
19:31Have a tendency
19:32to press just a little bit.
19:33And it could be
19:35a factor in a fight
19:35like this
19:36because Nance is
19:37going very very confident.
19:41That time Moore
19:42opened Nance up
19:43for a chance
19:43with the right hand
19:44but he just came up
19:45short with the right hand
19:46when he did have him open.
19:54Nance once again
19:55on the ropes now
19:56now gets himself
19:57off of there.
19:57Nance looks as though
19:58he might be slowing down
20:00just a little bit.
20:01Not enough to really
20:02be a factor in the fight.
20:06Left hand up
20:07on the forehead
20:08causes Nance
20:08to take a step back.
20:09Moore with a left
20:10and a right behind that.
20:11Now as Nance
20:11against the ropes
20:12Nance is hurt.
20:14Right hand misses
20:15but Nance still hurt
20:16against the ropes.
20:17Left hand comes up
20:18a little bit short too.
20:19Left right to the top
20:19of the head
20:20and Moore is all over Nance
20:21now.
20:22Nance finally manages
20:23to get away
20:23but goes right back
20:24on the ropes
20:24on the other side
20:25of the ring.
20:27Good body shots
20:28there Ray.
20:29Oh yes.
20:30And he's doing a job
20:31on Nance
20:32because he's beginning
20:33to bend over
20:34a little bit.
20:39Nance now back
20:40in the middle
20:40of the ring.
20:40He took much
20:41the worst of that
20:42with Davey Moore.
20:43Right hand lead
20:44that time by Moore.
20:45Again causes Nance
20:46to take a step back.
20:47We're coming
20:47towards the end
20:48of round four here.
20:52Just five seconds left.
20:54Once Moore
20:54and Moore
20:54presses the attack.
20:55Right hand catches
20:56Nance up the side
20:57of the head there
20:57and Nance a little bit
20:59rubber legged
20:59as the round ends
21:00and that was clearly
21:01Davey Moore's round.
21:02Oh by long shot.
21:04But Moore threw
21:05a great deal of punches
21:06at that round
21:07and he could be
21:09onward for Ben.
21:11That was the Davey Moore
21:13that we saw
21:14in the amateurs.
21:15He had obviously
21:16been husbanding
21:18his strength
21:19saving himself.
21:22Apparently feels
21:23that he's worn
21:24his opponent down
21:24a little bit now
21:25and he can let go.
21:26Let's take a look
21:27at some of that action now.
21:29It's a lead right
21:29and a good left hand
21:30on the jaw
21:31to drive him
21:31into the ropes
21:32and that's where
21:33he started to go
21:34to the body
21:34after a while
21:35and I think
21:36that's slowed
21:37Nance down
21:38considerably
21:39and maybe Nance
21:40will have a little
21:41less bounce
21:42from now on.
21:44This is the
21:44same action
21:45from a different
21:46side.
21:47There's a good
21:47right hand
21:47to the body.
21:50Another one.
21:52Right to the
21:52chest bone.
21:55That hurts.
21:57They didn't really
21:57get hurt in this
21:58sport.
21:58I'll tell you.
22:00I prefer this
22:01side of the ropes
22:01to leave.
22:05So Davey Moore
22:06kind of gaining
22:06control of the fight
22:07once again
22:07after it looked
22:08as old Felix Nance
22:09might have seen
22:10a bit of an opening
22:11there and Moore
22:11was a little bit
22:12wild.
22:13Got cut inside
22:13the mouth
22:14but now we're
22:14in the fifth
22:15round and Moore
22:15now really going
22:16after Nance
22:16once Moore
22:17gets him against
22:17the ropes
22:18but misses
22:18with a couple
22:19of punches.
22:19Moore's beginning
22:20to talk to
22:20Nance now
22:21and that's
22:23a feeling
22:23of confidence.
22:25Right hand
22:25puts Nance
22:26against the ropes
22:26again and Moore
22:27now down to the
22:28body once Moore
22:29gets Nance
22:29back against
22:30the ropes
22:30combinations
22:30to the head
22:31and Nance
22:32really right now
22:33taking some
22:34pretty good shots
22:35from Davey Moore.
22:36Referee Dick
22:37Bradley separates
22:38the two and
22:38they're back
22:39in the center
22:39of the ring.
22:42Moore had a lot
22:43of knockouts
22:43as an amateur
22:44but both of his
22:45victories as a
22:46professional
22:46have been by
22:47decision.
22:48I think he's
22:49looking for a
22:49K on his record.
23:01Davey Moore
23:02in the red trunks,
23:03Felix Nance
23:03in the blue.
23:05Neither man
23:05has lost a fight
23:06with a total
23:07of only five
23:07between them.
23:09Nance now
23:09a little cautious
23:10and he takes
23:10another pretty good
23:11shot from Moore
23:12right there
23:12back against
23:13the ropes again
23:13and that is
23:14where Moore
23:14has done
23:14the majority
23:15of his damage
23:15in this fight.
23:22Moore is still
23:22fighting open
23:23mouth and I'm
23:24sure that's
23:24something that
23:24his handlers
23:25are going to
23:25have something
23:26to say to
23:27him about.
23:27At this point
23:28now fatigue
23:29has set in
23:29with Moore
23:30and he's
23:31thrown out of
23:31punches.
23:31He's also
23:32missing a great
23:33deal but I
23:34said a lot of
23:34potentials in
23:35David Moore
23:36because he
23:37never loses
23:38confidence.
23:40Also he has
23:41a beautiful
23:41body for a
23:42well-await
23:43doesn't he?
23:43He has legs
23:44and very strong.
23:46He's very
23:46lean and
23:47affects a good
23:48punch.
23:51Left hand
23:52on the heart
23:52that time
23:52by Moore
23:53again backs
23:53Nance up.
23:57One minute
23:58remaining here
23:59in the fifth
23:59round.
23:59Another left
24:00to the chin
24:00and once
24:01Moore
24:01Nance
24:01is backed
24:01up against
24:02the ropes
24:02and Moore
24:03pursues it.
24:06overhand
24:07right back
24:22stands up
24:23once again.
24:23Moore clearly
24:24the aggressor
24:25right now
24:25clearly in
24:26control of this
24:26fight as we
24:27come to the
24:2732nd mark of
24:28the fifth round.
24:29Crowd here is
24:30still surprisingly
24:30quiet.
24:36Another right
24:36hand a little bit
24:37short and left
24:38cross just gets
24:39the nose of
24:39Felix Nance.
24:40Crowd is showing
24:41its poise too.
24:42That's right.
24:43He's saving
24:43himself for the
24:44big one.
24:44That's right.
24:48They're saying
24:49that this is the
24:49biggest sports
24:50weekend ever here
24:50at the Boston
24:51Garden and the
24:52Boston Garden
24:52is no less than
24:5352 years old so
24:54that is really
24:54saying something.
24:55Just about to the
24:56end of round
24:57five.
24:59Bradley,
25:00Dick Bradley,
25:00the referee,
25:01tells Davey Moore
25:03to keep him up
25:03but Moore right
25:04now has really
25:04had no problem
25:05and clearly is
25:06in control of
25:06this fight.
25:13Well,
25:13here's a program
25:13note from HBO
25:14Sports inside the
25:15NFL.
25:16A preview of
25:17Super Bowl XV.
25:18That comes
25:19direct from
25:19the Louisiana
25:20Superdome and
25:21it'll all happen
25:21on Thursday,
25:22January 22nd.
25:23Len Dawson and
25:24Nick Bonacani
25:25will be on hand
25:26to tell you all
25:26about what to
25:27expect.
25:27The Oakland Raiders
25:28and the Philadelphia
25:29Eagles in Super Bowl
25:30XV.
25:31Should be a good one
25:32right here on HBO.
25:35Meanwhile,
25:36you look into the
25:36corner of Davey Moore.
25:39Moore, the man in
25:40control right now
25:41and we talk so much
25:42about how much of
25:43the sport is
25:43psychological and
25:44you can really see
25:44his confidence grow
25:45as soon as he got
25:46Nance against the
25:47ropes and as soon as
25:47he hurt him the first
25:48time.
25:49That's his thing.
25:50And all fighters
25:50have that.
25:52They get a man in
25:53trouble and they
25:53want to take
25:53advantage of him.
25:56Sixth and final
25:56round upcoming now
25:57between Davey Moore
25:58and Felix Nance.
26:01And they come to
26:02the center of the
26:02ring.
26:03Moore literally
26:03leaping into the
26:04center of the
26:04ring here.
26:06Nance knows he
26:06has to go get his
26:07man now as he
26:08apparently is trailing
26:09and I'm sure his
26:09corner has told
26:10him so.
26:11He starts out
26:12pretty strong but
26:12he runs right into
26:13a very strong
26:14Davey Moore.
26:14Moore.
26:38Combination against
26:39the ropes right over
26:39as Felix Nance and
26:41Moore pursues it once
26:42again.
26:42Moore in clear control
26:43of the fight right
26:44now.
26:44Davey Moore out of
26:45the Bronx, New York.
26:46He's 21 years old in
26:47his third professional
26:48fight.
26:51Learning experience
26:52tonight for Davey
26:53Moore, also for
26:53Felix Nance for that
26:54matter.
26:55Moore has begun to
26:56reach with his
26:56punches and I truly
26:59don't want to see
27:00Moore get caught with
27:01one of those freak
27:01shots.
27:02You know, by getting
27:03a little bit too
27:04overconfident.
27:04I think that's a
27:06good point.
27:07He probably figures
27:07at this point,
27:08Felix Nance does not
27:09have a lot left but
27:10sometimes it doesn't
27:11take a lot in this
27:12kind of situation.
27:13It really doesn't.
27:14You know, anything
27:15can happen in the
27:16break.
27:16One punch and it's
27:17all over.
27:19Ask Mike Weaver.
27:20That's right.
27:22He lost a fight for
27:2314 and two thirds of
27:25a round and became
27:26the heavyweight champion
27:26of the world.
27:27That's exactly right.
27:28And that's the
27:28perfect analogy.
27:29But I think Nance is
27:35a little tired, hanging
27:37on.
27:38He hasn't been able to
27:40put a dent yet in Moore
27:42and I think he knows
27:43that he's just running
27:45it out.
27:46Took a pretty good
27:47overhand right that
27:48time by Moore that
27:48forced Nance into the
27:49ropes once again and
27:50Moore pursues the
27:51attack here.
27:53Moore might be the
27:54kind of fighter who's
27:55more effective in a
27:56longer fight because he
27:57keeps swarming at
27:58shit, coming at
27:59you and wearing you
28:00down.
28:01Pased himself very
28:02well in this fight so
28:03far.
28:03He started out rather
28:04slowly and you can see
28:04him just kind of pick
28:05the pace up and he
28:06probably peaked toward
28:07the end of the fifth
28:08round and he's kept the
28:08pressure on Nance here
28:09even though he has a
28:10tired man on his
28:11hands.
28:22Maybe more a little
28:23bicycling in the middle
28:24of the ring and now he
28:25has Nance and a rubber
28:27leg.
28:27Nance tries to throw a
28:28left hand back and
28:29Moore gets him up
28:30against the ropes again.
28:3130 seconds to go in the
28:32fight.
28:32Moore really pursuing
28:33him left to the right
28:34to the head that time
28:34and Nance back
28:35against the ropes.
28:46Nance is trying to
28:47hang on, get to the end
28:48of this.
28:48He's got 10 seconds to
28:49go.
28:49Moore with a right hand
28:50to Nance's head against
28:51the ropes once again and
28:52another right to the top
28:53of the head.
28:56And Phoenix Nance manages to
28:58go the full six rounds.
29:00Davey Moore walks away and
29:01walks away confident in the
29:02fact that he will come away
29:03with his third victory in his
29:04many fights.
29:05For Phoenix Nance, as we
29:06mentioned, yet another
29:07learning experience.
29:10Well, Davey Moore started out
29:11a little bit slow, Ray, but
29:12when he had to come on, he did
29:13come on.
29:14And as we mentioned before,
29:15once you could really see his
29:16confidence grow once he heard
29:17his man.
29:18Moore has a lot of potentials,
29:20as I said earlier.
29:21And he has a few edges that
29:23need to be smoothed out.
29:24And he will be in the top
29:25ranks of the welterweights
29:26in no time at all.
29:29Well, that was only his
29:29third fight.
29:30As you mentioned, there's
29:30always a little apprehension.
29:31Right now, let's go up to
29:32the ring announcer for the
29:33decision here.
29:35Just a couple of more
29:36things to check before we
29:37get to that decision.
29:39Davey Moore's corner pretty
29:40confident in the fact that
29:42he has, in fact, dated
29:43three out of three.
29:46In the other corner, Felix
29:48Nance just kind of
29:49putting the robe on and
29:51saying, well, I did the best
29:52I could, kind of danced
29:53with what brought me.
29:55Didn't embarrass himself at
29:57all.
30:01And we were just about
30:02set for the decision.
30:02Ladies and gentlemen, we
30:03have a unanimous decision.
30:06The winner, Moore.
30:09And as expected, Davey Moore
30:10is the winner of the fight
30:12here.
30:15And winning unanimously.
30:16I don't know, really, that
30:17he lost a round at all.
30:18I think he might have lost
30:19the second round.
30:19He had a little bit of
30:20problem there.
30:21I even feel this man
30:22showed good qualities of a
30:23fighter.
30:25Both these fighters really
30:26seemingly having some
30:28experience, even though they
30:29really only had a total of
30:30five fights.
30:31They both seemed pretty
30:32poised.
30:32They did.
30:33I will give both fighters a
30:34great deal of credit.
30:35Davey Moore seemed to aim
30:36his punches just a little
30:37bit, especially in the
30:39punches coming in behind
30:40his jab.
30:40He seemed to aim it just a
30:41little bit.
30:42That's an experience,
30:43Barry.
30:43As time goes, these guys
30:45will be bombers.
30:46Good bombers.
30:47All right, I think right
30:48now Larry Merchant is with
30:49the winner, Davey Moore.
30:50Larry, a word to the
30:51winner.
30:53All right, I'm with Davey
30:54Moore.
30:55Davey, how has your
30:55transition into
30:57professional boxing been?
30:59Well, I think it's a little
31:00easier because you got more
31:02than three rounds.
31:03Get your work together.
31:04You know, you can take your
31:05time a little bit.
31:06Amateurs only three rounds.
31:07You got to get out there and
31:08stop off the button from the
31:10stop.
31:10You only got three rounds.
31:12But then I got six rounds,
31:13so on eight and ten, I can
31:14take my time to fight a little
31:16better, I think.
31:17You haven't had any knockouts
31:18in your three victories.
31:20Why is that?
31:21It looked like you were really
31:22trying for one there.
31:23I was trying for it.
31:23I was trying for it, but he
31:25just wouldn't go.
31:26But I'm going to have it.
31:27But as long as I keep on
31:28winning, that's the most
31:29important thing.
31:30Ray Leonard was commenting
31:31about the fact that you fought
31:32most of the fight with your
31:34mouth open.
31:35We could see your mouthpiece,
31:36and he thought that maybe even
31:37you got your lip cut because
31:38of that.
31:39Is that a habit you had for as
31:41an amateur?
31:41My mouthpiece broke like it
31:44slid in the middle.
31:45I paid $150 for it.
31:46It slid in the middle, and I
31:47couldn't really put the
31:48pressure down like I supposed
31:49to.
31:49I really would have cut my
31:50lip.
31:51Thank you very much, Davey
31:52Moore.
31:52And now back to Barry and
31:54Ray.
31:55So, Davey Moore is the
31:56winner, Sugar Ray.
31:57That has got to take you
31:58back.
31:58Remember the time that you
31:59just had a couple of fights
32:00and you're always fighting
32:01some guy you really don't
32:01know anything about?
32:03I always would have to
32:03think that there's got to
32:04be just that little man in
32:05the back of your head that
32:06says, what if?
32:07That's true.
32:07Every time you step in the
32:08ring, you say, what if that
32:09punch lands?
32:11But Davey Moore looked quite
32:12impressive.
32:13Well, we await the start now
32:15with Amarvan Hagler,
32:16Fulgencio Obomaias.
32:17I want to make that point
32:18clear again.
32:18We will call him Fuli Obel.
32:20There's no question about
32:22that.
32:22Obomaias is not going to
32:23last.
32:24He is the guy that comes into
32:24the fight.
32:25He has won 30 straight
32:26fights.
32:27He's won 28 of them by
32:28knockout.
32:29On the other side, you've
32:29got Marvin Hagler.
32:30Everybody here in Boston
32:31knows Marvin Hagler.
32:32Everybody in the United
32:33States is aware of what he
32:35is all about.
32:35And he's fighting a guy
32:36that's really an unknown
32:37quantity.
32:37And I would think as the
32:38champion that it's got to
32:39be a very difficult task.
32:40You'd rather fight somebody
32:41who you know something
32:42about.
32:43Really, that's true.
32:43I mean, when I step into
32:45the ring, and I'm quite
32:46sure Marvin feels the same
32:47way.
32:48He comes in as his champion
32:49and he's especially fighting
32:51at home.
32:51He's fighting what a lot of
32:54boxing critics would say
32:55a nobody because no one
32:56had seen him on TV.
32:58But I'm quite sure Marvin's
33:00thinking in the back of his
33:00mind, could this guy do it?
33:02Almost one of those darned
33:03if you do and darned if you
33:04don't kind of situations.
33:05If you win, people say,
33:06well, you fought a hamburger.
33:07And if you lose, people say,
33:08well, you lost to a hamburger.
33:08That's true.
33:09How good are you?
33:10we got a lot Day one.
33:13We got a lot.
