00:01A Sabah UMNO leader has proposed that parties contesting the upcoming state election
00:06consider friendly races in overlapping seats.
00:10Saleh Syed Kerak, the Sabah UMNO treasurer, said rather than letting overlaps cause friction
00:16or lead to proxy-independent candidates, it would be more constructive to consider friendly contests.
00:23He said a friendly contest is a planned, respectful arrangement where parties agree to contest the same seat
00:31with the understanding that whoever wins, the seat remains part of the coalition.
00:36Saleh said that to manage the arrangement effectively, parties must balance political realism with respect for one another's grassroots presence.
00:46He said this approach, which was also taken in countries like India, Germany and Indonesia,
00:53would help reduce tension among party machineries, maintain unity and give voters clarity.
00:59Last week, Sabah UMNO chief Bung Mokdar Radin said the party would not work with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah
