Kyla Pratt chats with THR at the 2025 BET Awards and opens up about staying grounded in the industry and the importance of representation. Plus, she talks about how she stays positive, regardless of what is happening in the world at the moment.

00:00I have to say, I was just talking to your castmates, like, girl, we got Penny Proud on us.

00:04They're so happy to be with you.

00:05And they are so sweet.

00:06Like, even walking on set and just being with them, like, their energy was so lovely.

00:11And sometimes I do forget what I've done for a living for a very long time because I'm a person.

00:16Like, you know, I'd be like, oh, I got to take my kids here.

00:18I got to do this.

00:19I got to do that.

00:19But to go on a set like that, especially filled with my people that I enjoy watching just as a fan

00:25and for their energy to be what it was and what it is, it's an amazing feeling.

00:29So I'm very excited to be a part of The Chi.

00:32I feel like you could speak to the fact, like, right now there's a lot of conversation that we don't have a lot of shows for young black kids,

00:38you know, to see themselves in that.

00:40Are you feeling frustrated with what's out there?

00:42Do you think the time?

00:44I'm not really frustrated.

00:45I refuse to get frustrated anymore because that messes with your energy.

00:50So you have to figure out what if something is missing, what can you do to make it happen?

00:54So I think that's why I've ventured more behind the scenes this year and last year

00:59and just trying to, you know, be creative and not limit myself and be behind the camera as well as in the front.

01:06So you can't really, don't allow yourself to get frustrated.

01:08Just whatever you need to do to make that change, just attempt it.

01:13Every time I talk to you is a word.

01:14Girl, because people all the time, they'll be like, oh, my God, you're so positive when you talk.

01:20And I'm like, look, I am a regular, everyday person that is trying to stay sane in a world that wants to drive me crazy.

01:27And I know that people listening or people that I talk to are going through the same things,

01:32no matter if we're smiling on this carpet or smiling at the grocery store.

01:36I know, ooh, it's a lot.

01:38But so that's why I try to just express the things that go on in my head and what I try to remind myself every day

01:44because I'm not perfect.

01:45I don't always have this, you know, I'm real.

01:48I tell people all the time, I could be Erykah Badu or I could be Pop.

01:52We could be Sade.

01:53We could be you pick, you pick, you pick.

01:57But I also don't, you know, I don't allow, if anybody chooses that they want me to be a certain way,

02:01I kind of give them the opposite because you're not going to play with me.

02:03I'm not easily controlled.

02:04But I just try to let people know, like, you're not alone.

02:08It's a lot going on in this world.

02:09So just stay positive.
