Trump Sparks Backlash as National Guard Arrives in L.A. on His Orders to Quell Immigration Protests

Large-scale protests are taking place in the Los Angeles area against President Donald Trump’s immigration policies and raids conducted by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

00:04The LAPD moving in on horseback, firing rubber bullets at protesters,

00:10moving them on through the heart of L.A.

00:25What we're seeing in L.A.

00:27is chaos caused by the administration.

00:32People should exercise their right to protest.

00:34That's their First Amendment right.

00:36But people should also exercise that right peacefully.

00:41We do not want to play into the administration's hands.

00:44When you raid Home Depot and workplaces,

00:47when you tear parents and children apart,

00:50and when you run armored caravans through our streets,

00:53you cause fear and you cause panic.

00:55And deploying federalized troops is a dangerous escalation.

01:00But we need to be real about this.

01:02This is about another agenda.

01:05It's not about public safety.

01:07There's clearly no plan.

01:08And there is clearly no policy.

01:10I want the people of Los Angeles to know

01:13that we stand with all Angelenos,

01:16no matter where you were born.

01:18The First Amendment right gives you the ability, again,

01:21to protest peacefully.

01:23But it does not give you the right to be violent,

01:26to create chaos, or to vandalize property.

01:29In recent days, many protests across the city have been peaceful,

01:33and we thank the community for expressing their views

01:36and their frustration in a responsible manner.

01:39However, when peaceful demonstrations devolve

01:41into acts of vandalism or violence,

01:44especially violence directed at innocent people,

01:47law enforcement officers, and others,

01:49we must respond firmly.

01:51An act of violence, whether toward officers,

01:53demonstrators, or the public,

01:54will be met with swift and lawful action.

01:57Our goal is to maintain order without escalating conflict,

02:01and to protect everybody's right to safety.
