Labour MP for Mid and South Pembrokeshire has shared what he calls ‘shocking’ findings from a dentistry survey launched recently - which invited constituents to share their experiences accessing NHS dental care.
The move follows mounting concern about the accessibility and availability of NHS dental services in the area, which are managed by Hywel Dda University Health Board.
MP Henry Tufnell has now published the results of a dentistry survey launched on April 24.
He recently met with the Dentistry Services team at Hywel Dda, continuing a series of discussions he has had with Chief Executive Professor Phillip Kloer. During the meeting, he shared the survey's findings and reaffirmed his commitment to working collaboratively to improve patient outcomes and satisfaction.
Constituents had already raised concerns about long waiting times, difficulties registering with an NHS dentist, and a lack of available appointments.

00:00and the results are truly shocking. We've got 88% of people who responded don't have access to an
00:05NHS dentist, 60% had tried to register but had been unable to do so with only one in 200 being
00:12successful. All of this has a really big impact because we've had examples of people paying
00:17thousands in private bills, we've had severe delays, one person waiting 16 years and on top
00:24of that people suffering severe health consequences. I've presented the findings of the survey to the
00:29health board because they're responsible for managing the NHS dental contract in Pembrokeshire
00:34and on top of that I've been working with local dentists and dental nurses who work incredibly
00:39hard to provide an excellent service but the key thing is that we need to work together because
00:45I'm confident there'll be a solution for this and I'll keep you updated and also thank you to
00:49everyone who shared their findings in the survey, it's been incredibly helpful in terms of trying
00:53to improve the situation. Thank you and I'll keep you updated.
