00:00It's one of the highlights of the wrestling calendar, one of being the operative word,
00:06but the Money in the Bank ladder match is upon us, and one of those style of matches
00:11that end up getting clipped and shared by sheer virtue of the incredible, sometimes car crash
00:17hits that the stars of the WWE find themselves in for a shot at a WWE championship.
00:24But how does it work?
00:26Well, hanging above the ring is the coveted Money in the Bank briefcase.
00:31Inside, an opportunity for a WWE title shot at any time, at any place.
00:37Literally, you could run in midway through a title match and cash in your shot,
00:41in the case of Seth Rollins and Drew McIntyre.
00:44Or, you could be an ultimate opportunist like the artist formerly known as Edge, or Cope these days,
00:51and decide to cash in after a match for the easiest, let's be honest, sweatiest championship win you could think of.
00:58Now, six wrestlers from both the men's and the women's division duke it out as they attempt to climb the ladder and retrieve the case.
01:06Simple enough, right?
01:07Wrong.
01:08It's anything goes.
01:10More than one ladder can and will be used, along with tables, chairs, all sorts of paraphernalia you can find either under the ring or ringside.
01:20And the absolute wealth of bumps, or crashes, or burns, however you want to call them,
01:26it does make you wonder if they wonder if it's all worthwhile putting themselves through this for such an opportunity.
01:36Spoiler alert, it is.
01:38Now, the first Money in the Bank match took place back at WrestleMania 21,
01:42conceived as an idea by Chris Jericho, Keep K Faber Live,
01:46and has become an annual fixture, so much so that they dedicated a premium live event dedicated to both the men's and women's matches.
01:55Now, the winner of that first Money in the Bank match would be Edge, who cashed in on John Cena to earn his first world title.
02:03But the cash-in isn't quite straightforward and never guarantees that a title change is going to take place.
02:10In fact, on five separate occasions, the winners cashed in and lost the title match,
02:17including John Cena, who would be the very first to fail at a cash-in.
02:21Now, the women's Money in the Bank match has been a recent addition,
02:25with the first taking place in 2017, and won by Carmella, with shenanigans aplenty.
02:31While those wanting a bit of WWE trivia to show up while they're watching this year's event on Netflix,
02:37can shine away with this following nugget.
02:40Of all the female cash-ins that have taken place throughout the history of the women's briefcase,
02:45three have gone on to use their opportunity the very same night to win the title.
02:51Alexa Bliss in 2018, Bayley in 2019, and more recently Liv Morgan in 2022.
02:58And if you're also wondering who has won the Money in the Bank match the most amount of times,
03:04I'm pleased to say that would be CM Punk, who won it in both 2008 and 2009.
03:09But sadly, no chance for a three-peat for CM Punk.
03:13But perhaps there's a bit of interest he might have in the match,
03:17considering that Seth Rollins, who at the moment seems to be his eternal rival,
03:22is hoping to join Punk in that group,
03:25as he has taken part in this year's Money in the Bank match.
03:29And that's pretty much all you need to know about it.
03:32Strap in, enjoy the PLE on Netflix,
03:35and no doubt you'll see some of the thrills and spills if you don't on TikTok or other social media channels.
03:41Happy watching, and don't try it at home.
